you should all check out the Beef series on dvd if you haven't already, has some amazing stories and background lyrically and physically between some of the greatest, kool moe dee vs busy bee, krs one vs mc shan, nas vs jay-z, the internal battles of nwa, epmd and all that

some of the early free style battles were very artistic, the art of observing and creating free form poetry. i think some of its awesome. i mean someone like lil wayne, the guy hasnt written rhymes down in 5 years, all of his raps are free form, he mustve have dont some amazing battles.
