What do you listen to when you don't know what to listen to?

You know those moments. Lots of hesitation in front of the record shelves. Nothing quite jumps out at you. Nothing seems quite right for the mood or time. What do you fall back on?

I think for me it's almost always the Velvet Underground. I find the 1969 live thing especially is good for overcoming those lulls.

marleypumpkin 04.11.2008 11:55 AM

I'll almost always go to the S section to listen to SY, but sometimes I just put my CD player on All Disc Shuffle.

GravitySlips 04.11.2008 11:57 AM

It happened to me earlier and I put on Broadcast, so I guess them.

good question. this happens regularly. Ussualy I opt for something older, something I love and have listened to for a couple of decades or so. More "classic" stuff.
This way I re-discover why I loved so-and-so

the ikara cult 04.11.2008 01:10 PM

piper at the gates of dawn, bubble and scrape, surfer rosa or something else ive loved for years but havent heard in a while....

Dead-Air 04.11.2008 01:41 PM

I can't believe I'm the first to say Sonic Youth.

Lately, I fall back on listening to the environment as if it were a musical composition a bit more, but if I need to put actual music on and I don't want to think about the choice it's usually SY. If I'm trying to be quiet though, it'd probably be Eno.

I fall into Heideggerian boredom, let it resonate, and let my own Dasein become apparent to myself. -___-

Just kidding, probably who I've been listening most recently.

avantgarde1 04.11.2008 02:01 PM

almost always sonic youth... often it's demonlover.

gmku 04.11.2008 03:50 PM

I find that while I enjoy Sonic Youth, I have trouble with them as a fall-back kind of record. I have to be in a receptive mood, even for the truly great ones like Daydream Nation.

evol, the fall, stooges, the birthday party, white light white heat, beefheart, zeppelin, the wipers, joy division. i think.

Phlegmscope 04.11.2008 04:33 PM

I browse through my records, or listen to nothing.
what else would I do, eh?

Death & the Maiden 04.11.2008 11:27 PM

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Haunted Henschel - Compilation
Einstuerzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch
The Verlaines - You're Just Too Obscure For Me
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
I always have this problem a few days after I've bought an album and I don't need to listen to it anymore, so I just listen to something I know I'll enjoy and doesn't require any effort to listen to.

✌➬ 04.11.2008 11:34 PM

I put my itunes on shuffle.

Sonic Youth 37 04.11.2008 11:46 PM

Surfer Rosa

fugazifan 04.12.2008 02:56 AM

usually older nostalgic stuff, classic punk and 80s underground
fugazi
ramones
SY
dino jr
pixies

or cds that i havent listened to for ages and never think about lisening to, then when i cant think of anything to listen to, its as if the light sparkles on the outer corners of the jewel case, and i say, hum? maybe i'll listen to that. and then i enjoy it more that ive enjoyed any music in a while
