French bands

Reading the Deity Guns thread, I just wanted to know what french bands you guys know. Of course from the exterior it might appear that not loads of great french bands exist (except from the very known electronic acts, like Daft Punk, Air or Justice) - which is actually true, there is not really loads of great great bands up there, though there is a great math rock scene -, so I thought I'd also give you a few bands I recommand to you, alphabetically and without any genre classification:

37500 Yens (math-rock / hardcore)
Aside From A Day (hardcore)
Binaire (electro/noise/punk)
Cercueil (strange electro)
Cheval de Frise (math-rock)
Chevreuil (math-rock)
Gâtechien (math-rock)
Gomm (post-punk)
Marvin (noise-rock)
L'Objet (math-rock with a cold-wave touch)
Pneu (math-rock)
Principles Of Geometry (electronica)
Rhesus (pop/rock)
Sweet Apple Pie (psychedelic pop)

Those are new bands, I think you guys probably already know classic french bands (Thugs, Bästärd, Sister Iodine...), but I don't know if you know Diabologum; if you don't check them (album: #3) and the two bands that came after they split, Experience and Programme, because they're really good

Torn Curtain 04.03.2008 02:45 PM

I don't listen to many French bands (I'm more into singers like Gainsbourg), not mentionned are Ulan Bator (who I discovered thanks to nicfit).

Savage Clone 04.03.2008 02:46 PM

Frenchies I like lots:

Art Zoyd
Magma
Albert Marcouer
Gong was sort of French
Mutiilation

I should listen to Ulan Bator, I've already seen them mentionned lots of time and actually listen to Permanent Fatal Error, Olivier Manchion's new project, so I think I'll like it. I'll check

Pookie 04.03.2008 02:50 PM

Prediction: this will be a very short-lived thread.

SYRFox 04.03.2008 02:52 PM

Possibly. At least you will have heard the name of those good bands...

I love him to no end.
I even have his cell number.
there's the new pfe ep streaming on last fm.
the last song is recoded in a weird way, makes your head feel like it's shrinking.

here's a pic I took at a Cargo Cult's gig:

Sonic Youth 37 04.03.2008 03:00 PM

I'll have to check some of these out. I've been into a couple of French-Canadian bands lately.

---
and i second early magma, add gong too.

Danny Himself 04.03.2008 06:45 PM

April March is American but sings in French and is significantly more popular in France than in her homeland, or anywhere else. I don't know if she lives there. Anyway, I like her songs.

Everyneurotic 04.03.2008 06:51 PM

brigitte fontaine.

Yeah, that's an excellent soundtrack. It was a major inspiration on bands like
Air.

SYRFox 04.04.2008 06:21 AM

Oh also, check Rubin Steiner, he's amazing. And of course M83 but everybody already knows them/him

Everyneurotic 04.04.2008 11:24 PM

m83 suck.

d~rek 04.05.2008 12:15 AM

There's plenty of great french band:
Clara Clara
Coming Soon
Angelo Spencer (now in Olympia)
Bear Creek
Bérurier Noir
Brigitte Fontaine
Ned
See Hi Oh My
Antsy Pants (mostly french)

Cantankerous 04.05.2008 12:21 AM

air
magma
serge gainsbourg

and that's all i can think of

Torn Curtain 04.05.2008 05:43 AM

It's funny how I've never heard of most of the mentionned bands, this reflects how much the French music media suck.

SYRFox 04.05.2008 05:46 AM

Yeah, except for Noise Magazine, I can't think of ONE french magazine / radio / etc that deals with good music...

Torn Curtain 04.05.2008 05:48 AM

Téléphone FTW :D

More seriously no one has mentioned Noir Désir, I like them up to 666667 club (even if the Doors, Bunnymen and then Fugazi influences are perhaps too obvious).

i heard by chance Noir Désir's Tostaky recently, and it brought good memories of my teenagehood... all the parties at friends' places where that song would always pop out at some point...

no one mentioned Dat Politics yet... I really like "Plugs Plus" and "Sous Hit" in particular.

i remember i really liked Little Rabbits' "Yeah!" around the time when it came out, but I haven't listened to it in years and I'm not sure how I would feel about it today.

Toilet & Bowels 04.05.2008 06:30 AM

o o o 04.05.2008 07:18 AM

Taxi Girl, I find them a bit disappointing overall, but they had a few nice songs...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYMI4g60Hl8
I can't find a video for "Cherchez le garçon"...

I like the lyrics on this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzE12BiQYnc
Mec, comment t'épelles Paris ?
Paris ? P-A-R-I-S.
Non, non, non, non, non,
Paris, ça s'épelle M-E-R-D-E.

I have never been able to get into Métal Urbain neither... they seem to be more popular outside of France than in France (I think S. Albini cited them as an influence for Big Black... probably because of the drum machine)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_HMXbk3g08

I have actually difficulties finding a french band that I really love, I like some individual songs from many bands, but...

o o o 04.05.2008 07:21 AM

by the way, not a band and I know next to nothing about Daho's discography, but I really love this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnCdsh4DKYA
This one reminds me about my childhood... And the video is good too.
