kim is a good, solid, competent bass player, but among other bassists doesn't really stand out. but she is really cool.

The argument of how her style works with the other guitarists can not be emphasized enough. If she was playing a lead role, considering how long she has been doing it, her style could be quite different, and impressive. |
Les Claypool, by the way.
|
Jaco Pastorius.

Geddy Lee is very talented. His timing (and the band's) is outstanding...
|
geezer butler is a good bass player
keith richards was great when he played bass. john paul jones goes without saying - the whole band was a force of fucking nature. |
Yeah, it's not about their style, though. They're a band that prides themselves in 30 minute long drum solos, and unbelievable time signatures.
That's fine with me. |
I should also name-drop Victor Wootton
|
I mean, there are so many things that define a good bassist. Like most topics iin life these days, it's entirely about preference.

Exactly my point. She compliments the other members, and is smart for be subtle, and not overwhelming. That would destroy the sound, and ultimately, Sonic Youth. |
oh no i know. sonic youth would not be sonic youth without kim and her bass. they need to kick ibold out now.

just 2 names:
PAUL RAVEN STEVE DI GIORGIO nuff said. I love Kim's playing, too. But that's obvious. |
She has chronic tendonitis, as I've heard it.
And thank you, Crypto. |

still, mark ibold? |
Mike Watt & Bob Mair
|
Andrew Weiss (in his Rollins Band days).

As usual, a "list your favorite something or other" turns into a debate. Well, that's cool.
Kim isn't a good bass player, she isn't a bad player, she is just there. She is just a necessary component for a lot of sonic youth recordings. That's the thing about bass in general: it's usually there to fill space, which gives it a somewhat limiting role overall. At the same time, not many of us want to be subjected to endless bass solos. I made my list because it's bassists I personally feel had the most interesting riffs, perhaps not the person who was the best at "filling the space". Also: DUDE FROM RUINS |
Olivier Manchion (Ulan Bator - Permanent Fatal Error - Faust - Damo Suzuki's Network) he's a genius..
Massimo Pupillo (Zu - zu related stuff). The guy who plays with Beck. Vern Rumsey Brian from LB there are too many, all sexy. |
sam rivers - limp bizkit
fieldy - korn |
In no order of preference:
Simon Gallup Peter Hook Mick Grondhal Colin Greenwood Danny Thompson Fred Smith Micha Acher Andy Rourke Paul McCartney Tina Weymouth Adam Clayton (yes, he does have great bass lines) EDIT: I'll add that I'm more into melodic bassists than proficient ones (probably because I'm not a bassist myself) |
So... how does a list of your "favorite" whatever turn into a debate???
This place is just weird sometimes. |
peter hook, NEW ORDER

Only if it's not a debate.

Sid Vicious.

All respects to Sid. (r.i.p.)
|
He sure couldn't play the bass though.
|

John Cale Mark Chung Holger Czukay Andy Rourke Billy Nelson |
Charles Mingus
Mike Watt Bootsy Collins Jaco Pastorius Eric Avery Les Claypool (actually not a favorite but his talent overrides preference) Chuck Dukowski aaarrrhg, thats all I can remember righ now, I just woke up..... |
