Do you buy your SY on vinyl?

First off, I don't mean to come off as a vinyl snob. I think CDs are perfectly fine. My preference is for vinyl, partly because I like the larger format for the artwork, and partly because it's what I grew up collecting. I've tried to collect most of my Sonic Youth copies on vinyl, although sometimes that's been nearly impossible--since I didn't really get into them until around 1990, I haven't been able to find everything from the early years on vinyl.

What's your preference?

TheDom 05.08.2006 04:38 PM

CD.

gmku 05.08.2006 04:44 PM

I have a few things on both CD and vinyl--the Goo Deluxe LP set and the original Goo CD release; A Thousand Leaves; and the recent Sonic Youth EP reissue. What happened with the last two was I worried about having to wait too long to find it on LP or that it will never come out on vinyl, going ahead and buying it on CD and then three weeks later or so, seeing the LP in the store and getting that, too.

I was patient about The Whitey Album, though, and held out for a good three weeks or so before the vinyl finally showed up in the stores.

But if I saw both CD and LP in the store, I'd go with the LP vice the CD. I have Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, and EVOL on LP as well. The packaging and vinyl on the recent things is pretty awesome. Fairly heavy vinyl, nicely published covers.

Rob Instigator 05.08.2006 04:52 PM

I buy most of the SY on vinyl. I do have 3 or 4 albums on cassette and BMR, CIN, DDN, EVOL, SISTER, SFOSL, MS, and Nurse on CD though

gmku 05.08.2006 04:54 PM

Have three SYR things on vinyl, too. Kinda cool to hit the 45rpm button for SYR1-Anagrama.

Laila 05.08.2006 05:13 PM

damn you rob!! i need to meet you so i can steal your stuff!!

m^a(t)h 05.08.2006 06:45 PM

CD. I dont have a record player so....

schizophrenicroom 05.08.2006 06:45 PM

i have the deluxe ep on vinyl. it's one of those albums that doesn't seem "right" on cd, and plus, i bought it just a few days after it came out on kungfunation and all they had was vinyl.

scott v 05.08.2006 07:59 PM

I have nearly all the pre-DGC releases on vinyl i made a point to get those starting about 5 or so years ago, w/ some special finds; a test pressing of the SST version of 'confusion is sex', the 1st s/t ep on the Zensor label (i believe the german subsidary label to nuetral during the early 80's), bad moon rising (Blast First), EVOL (SST), Sister (SST), master-dik ep (SST), Daydream Nation 2LP (Blast First)... still wanting to get that kill yr idols 12" ep...

I would totally but SY vinyl if I had a good record player. Unfortunately I dont, so I dont buy vinyl.

whorefrost 05.09.2006 05:11 AM

i once saw the kill yr idols 12" in a UK record store... it was only £10... why i didn't buy it still haunts me to this day... I have everything on CD and then there are a few things I have re-bought on vinyl... I plan to get some more vinyl although I am doing this gradually as I prefer to spend money on records I haven't heard before! my vinyl SY collection:
Sonic Youth EP
EVOL
Death Valley 69 12"
Sister (uncensored cover)
Washing Machine
A Thousand Leaves
NYC Ghost and Flowers
Sonic Nurse
Master Dik
Sunday 7"
Helen Lundeberg/Eyeliner 7"
Mirror/Dash 7"

I'm gonna take some pics and post them...
CHout, that collection is indeed a thing of rare beauty...

DemonBox 05.09.2006 06:23 AM

i have Ciccone Youth on Blast First LP. that one is a real goodie

jhns 05.09.2006 12:19 PM

i got most of the older albums on CD, because i didn't have a record player when i discovered sonic youth. but since a couple of years i totally prefer vinyl, so i can't help to buy all the re-issues :)

the most beautiful SY related vinyl i have is this one:

I wanna jump into that picture (gingerly, of course, to keep from stepping on the vinyl goodies) and scoop all that good stuff up in my arms. Wow.

SYphilis 05.09.2006 01:28 PM

Mostly CD for me, although I do have Murray St, the Goo Deluxe reissue, SYR1, the Sonic Youth "Goo is You"/Nirvana "Endless, Nameless" 7'' and the HL/Eyeliner 7''.

chout i'm so jelouse of you!! if i ever met you i would be your bff!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.09.2006 07:38 PM

I bought Murray Street and Nurse on vinyl. Everything before that was on CD because my little brother bought it and I stole it from him. My sister gave him a copy of Dirty and we got into it at the same time, and he just happen to buy all the albums, which was very convenient for me, he stopped liking SY around Murray Street, so I resumed. I lost my copy of Goo, and I leant my Corporate Ghost out to a friend. I need some Gooage.

Plus in 2004-2005 I didn't really buy any albums because I lived close enough to WRCT and was DJ'ing enough so I could access anything. It was great. The had some really rare stuff.

Ich bin gael 05.10.2006 02:45 PM

I have a few of the SRYs and a few 7''s on vinyl. I plan on buying Rather Ripped on vinyl and just downloading it for dya to day use (that's a new policy I'm startng... buy vinyl, download digital).

karma_army 05.10.2006 03:00 PM

Can others please post Pics of their sonic collections.....

Hey Laila!

guitarpro 05.12.2006 04:39 PM

I dig both CD and vinyl. I got many of both so I guess I go either way.

Johnny American 05.12.2006 10:27 PM

I have these on vinyl: Sister, Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, Bad Moon Rising (also on Blast First CD), SYR1, 3 and 4, Goo & Dirty Deluxes, Sonic Nurse, Murray Street, Disappearer 12", Master-Dik, The White(y) Album and the Helen Lundberg 7". And I also paid way too much for the Death Valley 69/Brave Men Run 7" at some point.

Can't wait for the RR and Psychic Hearts records.
