Rather Ripped
I've noticed that since the board started we haven't talked at all about Sonic Youth. I mean this is a Sonic Youth board. So, Rather Ripped.
I'm excited. Quite. Post your thoughts. |
Hell yes!!! 666!!!

SONIC YOUTH NEW LP "RATHER RIPPED" DUE FOR FOR JUNE 2006 RELEASE
Sonic Youth are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming new record. Basic tracks were recorded with engineer TJ Doherty at legendary Sear Sound Studio. Sear Sound has been the site of recording previous SY albums 'Sister' and 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star', and Thurston's 'Psychic Hearts'. Overdubs were recorded with TJ at Sear Sound as well as with engineer Aaron Mullan at the band's own studio on Murray St. - A few vocal overdubs were even done at J Mascis' in house studio in Amherst, MA. with engineer John Agnello. The band spent the most of February mixing with John Agnello at Sear Sound and later at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ. Song titles are: Incinerate, The Neutral, What a Waste, Do You Believe in Rapture?, Lights Out, Rats, Or, Pink Steam, Turquoise Boy, Sleepin Around, Jams Run Free, and Reena. Geffen Records will issue the CD edition while the band's own Goofin' Records will release the vinyl edition of the new album. |
I have a feeling this will become a classic Youth album, I really do.

Maybe...it would be nice. Though personally, I'm interested to hear what SY's post-major-label period will be like. Perhaps Chris Habib can fill us in a bit. |
i hope it won´t be pure rock
|
yay, guys, nice too see people migrating to this board...actually i think rather ripped could be a mix between nyc ghosts and flowers and some dirty rock, wich should be reaaaaally good in my humble opinion..i am one of the few who loved nyc g&f(great "experimental" sounds )...add some well done rock tunes, and you can't go wrong...it might sound "wacky",but a mixture of styles rather than a "mood record" (like to ones i love the most) would be nice this time..
|
If I could choose what the new SY would be like, it would be like this:
An all instrumental album that stylistically sounds like a mix of Destroyer, Stil, and New Hampshire(minus the vocals). |
hey nicfit
mix between NYCG&F and some more straight Rock sounds really good. Well, i guess i will like it anyway |
a thousand threads,i'm sure we won't be disappointed...ayway,OFF TOPIC,i love my avatar...
|
good call Noumenal I like the sound of that...
Mine would combine the sound of 'Contre le sexisme' and 'She's in a bad mood' with the attack of 'Eliminator jr'... Thurston, Kim and Lee would all sing three songs each... and the remaining three songs would feature their combined vocals... well I can dream can't I? |
Also 'Rather Ripped' is really growing on me now... wasn't sure at first
|
i've kind of got a grim feeling about it for some reason.... the title seems a bit throwaway.... i feel like murray st. and nurse were kind of like this century's versions of sister and daydream in a way? where will they go next? the relative disappointment of goo...? maybe i'm just being pessimistic... i hope it's a great record in the same vein as Experimental Jet Set and Sister...
|
whorefrost,i also think that sonic nurse played "heavier" would resemble much more to daydream nation...the riffs are similar, the "energy" is somewhat "different"...well,i guess almost 20 years later this is normal...but live version of nurse songs were GREAT,better than on disc.i trust the youth, rather ripped will be surprisinly good...i'm really curious to see the artwork...
|
I'm excited about it, yeah. The one song I've heard, Sleepin Around, is a great rock song.
|
was sleeping around the video of Thurston, Lee and Steve?
the one from flywheel? |
In all honestly, I'm ready to be disappointed.
|
thing is, i was a bit underwhelmed by sleeping around... all in all i just don't feel as excited/optimistic as i was in the months prior to the release of Murray St. / Nurse....
|
yeah, i sure am getting excited about the new album, i love when all the details start coming through on the net, the waiting begins...
|
Yeas, ATT, the flywheel vis is Sleepin Around. So is the basment rehearsals film, and I actually prefer the track as n instrumental. But it's a fine one either way, hiope there's a nice long version on the LP,
|
yeah
that song kicked ass i hope they added a lil noise to it |
despite my reservations, i'm still looking forward to a tour... although i have a feeling they won't make it to scotland again... still i'll be willing to travel unless the new ellpee totally sucks beyond redemption... shit, if i see them this year, it'll be my 7th SY gig....
|
Personally, I can't wait for the new album.
Really looking forward to it! |
look, the new album will rock and the new album will have its dissers too. sy is sy, similar to the fall..... always a bit different but always the same.
maybe this is another era starting sound of sy, maybe it will be back to the old 80s style.. who knows and for once i DONT wanna hear an advance copy of it. im gonna wait till the release date and go for a long drive with it blasting fom my car......... death on the highway revistited!!!!!!! |
It'll definitely have it's detractors, 'cause it's going for a more rock song element I think - a neew 'Dirty' is the impression I get, although I could be very wrong.
We could be lucky. THis decade has already given us Murray Street, I can't help but feel that another true classic is in the offing. |
release date ?
Is the release date going to be the 13th or the 6th of June?
|
6th of June
damn, i´m so excited i wonder what the cover will look like? |
They apparantly wanted te 6th, but one site last week said definitely the 13th.
|
that's what I heard Hip Priest, I guess it doesn't matter, I mean, what's another week right???
|
I don't know think I like the name so much
|
:) I'm not going to listen to it until it's released either... no advance copies or leaked downloads for me this time.
I can't wait to get it on vinyl and spin it on my turntable for the first time. |

the title is ok. i know it'll be better after i've heard the album
|
There's a lot of talk about whether it's 13th or 6th. Thurston said 6 and MTV said 13. I wonder if it will follow the "Murray Street" style, or go back to their older sound.
|
I'm totally stoked to hear the Sonic Youth album!
|
kind of unanswerable at the moment, but I definitely wonder if lee will be on keys for any of this new stuff?
![]() His organ playing on golden blue was righteous! |
has it been determined how many songs each member wrote on the record ? I think i heard it was 1 lee song :(. Anyone know how many kim or thurston songs ? also does anyone know which new song is lee's ?
|
Yep.....I don't want to hear any of it until it's released either.
|
I read a while ago that they're going for the fairly standard 1 Lee song, 4 for Kim and 5 for Thurston. But then, I thought there were going to be 12 songs in total, does that mean 2 instr.? Maybe, that's just old info. I'm not sure.
A bit off topic, but what number album do you make this? I'm never sure whether to count SYRs, The Whitey album etc. etc. |
That's the first time I see the issue of a Sonic Youth album (SYR 6 excepted), cause I'm a young fan, so I can't be more excited, and the Thurston Moore acoustic set I heard (with Or, Pink Steam and the fantastic Do you Believe in Rapture) is... I can't wait.
