Best LP by The Smiths?

Kind of inspired by _Slavo_'s Fall/Smiths poll; the Smiths did less than ten LP's, so theycan have a poll of their own.

I've incuded the sessions compuilations, because they seem to me to qualify as LP' in their own right. But I left out the live LP as the band never wanted it released and even discouraged people from buying it at the time.

The Smiths themselves always thought 'Strangeways' to be their strongest, but in a complete list I'd actually put that bottom. With all their other LP's, nearly every track is of classic quality, but not so much with that one, I think.

I vote for 'Meat is Murder' - classic tracks, all of them.

i havent heard much of the smiths so i will say salt and vinegar

fishmonkey 05.02.2006 06:08 AM

meat is murder for me too, plays havoc with my digestive system

HaydenAsche 05.02.2006 07:07 AM

Louder than bombs has always been my favorite.

Savage Clone 05.02.2006 08:40 AM

I voted for Hatful of Hollow even though it's not a "proper" album; it's the one I like the best still, and some of those song versions are my favorite incarnations. Meat Is Murder was a tough contender though.

I went with Meat is Murder, although Louder than Bombs was a close second. The album cover may have been the minute deciding factor.

_slavo_ 05.02.2006 09:25 AM

Queen is dead.

Fox 05.02.2006 09:27 AM

Meat is Murder

thewall91 05.02.2006 09:44 AM

i'm surprised "the smiths suck!" isn't an option. (no offense to real fans - just for the sake of the poll, ya know....)

sonicl 05.02.2006 10:22 AM

I loved hatful of Hollow when it came out, it was almost a greatest hits well before there was any reason for there to be one.

I can't bear listening to The Smiths any more though. I've tried but it just doesn't hold my attention. I'm having a similar problem with the Cocteau Twins at the moment too.

went with queen is dead. It wa shar dthough because meat is murder is fuckin great too. Both have two of the greatest opening tracks on any album... but over all queen is just smidgeon better. (not coverwise tho, meat is murder has an awesome cover)

krastian 05.02.2006 03:36 PM

Cool poll. Self titled.

nomadicfollower 05.02.2006 03:44 PM

Meat is Murder, only becuase it's the only one I've heard.

Hip Priest 05.02.2006 07:36 PM

It's only just struck me now, looking at the voting - for a band to put out not just that much material, but so much absolutely top class material, in a mere four years is pretty phenomenal.

it really is. And they broke right before they would've started to suck. Godd for them ^_^

Louder than Bombs

Everyneurotic 05.02.2006 11:22 PM

i voted for hollow because it's the only one i have. with the exception of the version of this charming man in it, which i don't like as much as the original version, it's an incredible album; all takes are ace.

RockerNino 05.03.2006 02:37 AM

hatful is so good. it has amazing versions of songs like handsome devil and these things take time. if only it had Ask.

Pax Americana 05.03.2006 06:59 PM

The Queen Is Dead has always been my favorite.

Daycare Nation 05.03.2006 08:25 PM

I hit the wrong button.

Daycare Nation 05.03.2006 08:26 PM

Ahh, the irony. There should be a Smiths song about I how I voted in the poll, but even THAT didn't go right, and the world doesn't love me.

samrago 05.03.2006 09:33 PM

ok, here's the answer.

despite what stephen thomas erlewine or pitchfork may say, The Queen is Dead is not the best album. the first one is. the Hatful songs are better than the original versions (even occasionally "This Charming Man"). Still Ill is their best song, period (especially with the harmonica on Hatful). Paint a Vulgar Picture is probably my second favourite song, and I REALLY like Strangeways a whole lot. I kind of wish someone would vote that one.

and if anybody wants to talk bootlegs, then I endorse Thank Your Lucky Stars. superb. honestly, I only listen to the first three songs, which I consider the finest track sequencing in their whole catalogue, if not in any band's catalogue. they work so well off each other, but then completely blows their load when they proceed with There is a Light. also there's the miserable security guards to enjoy there as well.

I feel as the universe unfolds and people become obsessive enough and start really listening, they would come to the same conclusion. trust me, I've spent too many lonely nights in my room to not know this.

Trasher02 05.04.2006 01:09 PM

The Queen Is Dead fo sho

Daycare Nation 05.04.2006 06:56 PM

It should be Louder than Bombs: 3. The World Won't Listen: 0.

Put me down as "Hey Morrisey, could you please shut the fuck up".

atsonicpark 05.06.2006 01:47 AM

Duh.

Louder than Bombs.

Torn Curtain 05.07.2006 05:37 PM

Hatful of hollow (that's the one that made me a Smiths fan).
