What is the Fascination with Mascis and Dino Jr on this board???

I just don't get it, I bought green mind when it first came out and listened to it for a couple of months then never listened to it again so I sold it, have tried listening to a few other albums and I just find them so so boring. So what is it that Dinosaur Jr. and J. Mascis does that lots of people on the board find so special. Is it something that you feel connected with becuase a time of your life was good or bad when you first discovered them or is it something else. Please explain...

Everyneurotic 06.29.2007 11:35 PM

they are dino jr. board rejects.

drrrtyboots 06.29.2007 11:37 PM

Buzzo masturbates a lot to J for his own reasons, leave him be.

Pookie 06.30.2007 04:34 AM

Modern day easy listening.

File alongside Coldplay & Arctic Monkeys.

It's not so much them/him that people don't like, as the endless threads started about him/them.

king_buzzo 06.30.2007 05:07 AM

well, there's no endless threads that we post, its the ocassional 'i hate mascis and all the threads about him here' thread that pops up every once in a while.

or maybe we should make like a only dino jr thread

How about the fact that Sonic Youth thank J in almost every other album and have him contribute a hell of a lot? The crossover Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth stuff (output and fanbase) always made sense to me.

Hell, I can hear the influence in each others' tunes.. Dinosaur Jr's "Pointless"... the ending vocal part of Empty Page... but that's just me.

atsonicpark 06.30.2007 05:33 PM

yeah i feel the pain of everyone when they talk about how much dino fuckin suck now.then, well.. i feel nothing.

Alex's Trip 06.30.2007 05:39 PM

Rob Instigator 06.30.2007 11:13 PM

bands are connected. fans connect throughg bands as well. dinosaur jr and sonic youth appeal to a very specoific guitar loving weirdo LIKE MYSELF!!! YAY!!!

I would say that for a period of about 10 years diahard sonic youth fans and die hard dinosaur jr fans would share around 80% membership! his guitar playing makes me happy whatever type of song he chooses to do. i like what he's about!

ZEROpumpkins 07.01.2007 02:53 AM

And what are your opinions on Wolf Eyes and Pavement, swa(y)?

"What is the Fascination with Mascis and Dino Jr on this board???"

i have been asking myself this question for a long time now, just never had the balls to make a thread out of it.
i'm not trendy enough to be a Dino-bore Jr fan.

Perhaps because of a song called "Teen age riot" and a documentary called "1991 The year punk broke"...

Trasher02 07.01.2007 12:18 PM

I thought that you're living all over me was great, I don't really listen to them anymore I kind of passed that period.

PAULYBEE2656 07.01.2007 12:20 PM

Whats The Fascination With Smashing Pumpkins On This Board?

sonicl 07.01.2007 01:03 PM

When Dino Jr first happened, they were something wild and special. Now they're just college rock. Mascis is a Clapton for the new alt-generation.

It boggles my mind that anyone could think Clapton was ever exciting, let alone being exciting to this very day.

With that said, Mascis is even worse.

SynthethicalY 07.01.2007 01:12 PM

Freak Scene is one of the few songs I enjoyed by them, and Just Like Heaven as well.

i agree 90% with this, for the other 10%, refer to the yardbirds.

king_buzzo 07.01.2007 01:17 PM

haha J hates Clapton! (Just read that in an interview)

sonicl 07.01.2007 01:17 PM

The current state of mainstream alternative rock is so dire that there are no acts to get excited about, so everyone is getting excited about stuff that happened 20 years ago instead. The real question should be "Why is alternative rock in such a terrible state right now?" And my answer is that it's because major labels are unwilling to take any risks, there are no big independent labels like 20 years ago who can break an exciting band, and the bands that people should be getting excited about are unwilling to play the corporate game. So there.

This is an interesting subject because definatly I find that Dino jr are a band here that a lot of people have a double standard with. Dino jr have never been that original at all and it'd stuff like that that which is a source for a lot of critizism for other band on this board - that being said, Dino jr are definatly one of my favourite bands of all time and you're a fool if you dont see how great they are. It's down to earth honest music and it has pull and weight to it. I don't like speaking about bands in terms of like awesome guitar solos and great songs because when i like a band it's something personal to me and I can't fathom why people wouldnt feel anything listening to You're living all over me.

hahah! I am so sorry fich monkey but you have just uttered the single most unbelievably moronic falsehood I have ever heard! Dinosaur Jr TRENDY? Liking them is TRENDY????? FUCK! In absolutely no way is a VERY VERY belated acknowledgement of the quality of a band from TWENTY YEARS AGO in any way TRENDY!!!

I am sorry, I apologize. It is just that to a dinosaur jr fan since 1987, when only around 250 thousand people in the entire country gave a flying fuck about dinosaur jr, the idea that liking them would in any way ever be trendy would have been a PIPE DREAM!!!!!

hmmmm, anyone can say that about any band they think is one of the greatest of all time, however an opinion about a piece of music doesn't make one a fool. If one finds Dino Jr. boring as bat shit then so be it. I just wanted to find out what it was that did it for people like Buzzo the whys?

pbradley 07.01.2007 06:13 PM

You asked, I'll answer.

One thing that fascinates me about Dinosaur Jr in their own right is the ability for J's guitar solos and general songwriting to come off as lamenting instead of grandstanding or typically indie rock (not all the time but done well in many songs). Bulbs of Passion, Repulsion, Quest, Little Fury Things, Kracked, Raisons, Lose, No Bones, Let It Ride to name a few. What helps is that Mascis' and Barlow's vocals fit perfectly with the lament and lyrical content.

By the end of Bug, Mascis seems to have pretty much abandoned this style for something different (Keep The Glove, Freak Scene, Pond Song). However, Mascis seems to come back to the lamenting style but rarely (How'd You Pin That One On Me, Out There, Grab It, Back To Your Heart). That and the vocal melodies (in a more general sense) are major reasons that make me lik Dinosaur Jr.

That's interesting. For me, the vocals were the final dealbreaker. I couldn't hang.

pbradley 07.01.2007 06:47 PM

Yeah, the vocals are indeed a polarizer.

they are a name dropper band. plain and simple.

Toilet & Bowels 07.02.2007 04:57 AM

fish monkey is right, dinosaur jr probably have more cool points now than at any other time in their career.

anyway, rob instigator aside, i think the people who like that band are all teenagers nowadays.

pbradley 07.02.2007 05:12 AM

I don't know, when I saw them play twice over the last year or so the youngest people there were in their twenties (including myself) and there was quite a few thirty to fourty year olds there. Hell, a group of late twenty year old buddy type guys crowded me out of my view when I saw them at the Great American.

I wanted to ask them if their wives knew that they were out so late.

sonicl 07.02.2007 05:20 AM

Plenty of "old" fans are seeing them nowadays, but not talking about them all that much. It's the youngsters that are doing all the talking.

sarramkrop 07.02.2007 05:21 AM

Whichever the case, this continuous and stupid debate about them is frankly boring and useless. It comes down to a couple of overexcited teenagers liking them and not being able to keep it all zipped up inside one or two threads alone.
