The Strokes - Is this it
Yes yes I know that there are a lot of strokes haters on the board but you have to admit that their first album is very very decent. In fact it's fucking brilliant. That's why I started this poll.
Pick your favorite song of the "Is this it" album. |
I excluded trying your luck because I thought it was the only song I didn't like and I had to eliminate one due the fact that you can only have 10 options.
|
I picked 'Last Nite', though my favorite Strokes song is 'Reptilia'.
|
Shit album, spawned off a bunch of even worse bands.
|
i would use a much more offensive word than "decent" to describe this album.
"rip off" and "overhyped" just start to scratch the surface just a teeny bit. |
The Modern age is very nice too. Makes me wanna dance incredible.

Welcome to 2001 everybody!

Negative Nancy's indeed, Trasher. The Strokes are excellent. its the whole critics darlings thing.. the songs are genius in their simplicity.

I love Trying your luck... |
is this it was brilliant
room on fire was not so good first impressions of earth has its moments, but is 10000 times better than room on fire edit: fun trivia, when i was dropping off janine habeck (playmate) off at the airport, i put on Is This It? and she loved it. I gave her the album and now she's obsessed |
too bad you don't know this band called television, they were like the strokes but in the 70's and way better.
|
Everyneurotic has said it best. Pointless band.
|
I think there's no comparison between the Strokes and Television. Television sounded like a perpetual guitar fight, Verlaine on one side, Lloyd on the other side. Strokes guitarists are not so bad, but you can't say they 're incredible. Is this it is not Marquee Moon. Not comparable.
Edit : My choice : Someday |
Hard To Explain - Breezy
|
hard to explain, but i like the modern age a lot too.
|
hard to explain is awesome
|
I wore this album out when it was released. I have the album after it but I don't think I've ever listened to it really. I think I may have to.
|
Probably Barely Legal, or Someday.
|
someday... or hard to explain.

NYC cops

I don't see how the Strokes are that much like Television. The latter was much more complex and challenging style. Not so with the Strokes..just very immediate and simple. i think there's obvious influence there but... tell me some bands that are really like the Strokes b/c i need to go buy their record.
|
Never got into this lot. There's just something too nice about their sound that I can't put my finger on. At least they have a sense of humour - who else in recent times has referenced Spinal Tap's "Smell The Glove" in their sleeve artwork?
|
i used to like the Strokes until i saw em live.
they were shit. my likeness died for em that night. |

Television. |

Nah, the Strokes don't have anything like the ten minute Marquee Moon i.e.. No offense to the Strokes, but Television was ground breaking. The Strokes write radio friendly 2 min 30 sec pop tunes with style. They're not that similiar. Pls. give me all these bands that the Strokes REALLY sound like. i'm still waiting. |
this is what the strokes sound like:
velvet underground (production sound & vocals) the ramones (rhythm) television (riffs and melodies) plus there's a band from new york called jonathan fire*eater that people said the strokes took the idea of ripping off those bands from, but i've never heard them. they split up ages ago though. i just googles them, here's a myspace: http://www.myspace.com/jonathanfireeater |
Jonathan Fire Eater sound quite a bit like The Strokes but without the tunes.
|
i'm listening to their myspace now, they sound a bit like the strokes with the angularity of the yeah yeah yeahs,
|
hahahaha "the strokes suck because they ripped off our original idea to rip off bands from the past"
|
Ah could not get into them. They bored me, but if you like them good for you.
|
I loved Is This It when it came out, it still holds up as the Strokes best record but every following record has let me down.

i do like take it or leave it, thats a good song.

give Room on Fire another chance. you will be rewarded. it's very similar to the first. its the third, when they went for a big proper sound that it got lame. the tunes weren't there. |

Wow, i remember Jonathan Fire Eater, i bought one of their singles years ago and thought they were great. I totally forgot about them untill you mentioned the name. I do like the album 'Is this It' but Icarus Line summed the band up by writing $ucking Dick$ on their tourbus! |
tie between last nite and the modern age but ultimately, last nite is a song closer to my heart.
|
This album is... Freshman year, Central Islip, three roommates, my first taste of coooold weather and snow, the year nearly everyone in the dormitory knew me as the quiet/unfriendly one, the beginning of my really anti-social years, the year I finally bought Nas' Illmatic, the beginning of my 3-year long Rap buying hiatus, the year I vomited for the first time in yearrrrs, the year I inadvertantly heard one of my roomates fucking a girl while sleeping, the year I'd drink Strawberry Yoohoo and listen to Beck's Sea Change before sleeping, the year Norah Jones was the new Mazzy Star, the year I temporarily thought I was gay, the year I discovered Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, the year I stopped listening to Is This It?.
You fuckers got it 4 cheap. Favorite song: Hard to Explain |
Is this it =great
Room on fire=good (c'mon, you cant deny reptilia or 12:51)...even Kanye dug it their latest=not so good...and not even memorable as i even forgot the title. |
i was watching some nondescript awful band on mtv canada talking about how you should buy music and vinyl is cool again or whatever shit, and one of the albums these guys reccommended was the strokes and this dork is saying some shit "i didn't know this was gonna be one of those quote unquote important records" and i just wanted to puke.
and then they showed something about some corp. i don't know if it was converse but i think it was. who made their own studio and recording label, and then they showed some fucking nobody strokes wanna be band who were talking some shit like "people say if you advertise a product or record for like a corporation you're selling out, but i think those people can stay in their basement and like preach to the fifteen people who listen to them." holy fuck buddy, you aren't famous, and the company is probably only giving you $5000 to put their logo all over the album, thanks for including that on yr album cover because now i know to avoid the cd even if it's free, that said you already advertised to me when i watched yr dumb ass interview, you already made me a marketing demographic. and i should kick their asses for that, and i could because strokes wannabe bands are so fucking soft. you know why converse chose you douchebag? not because you're famous, but because they don't want music overshadowing the thought of shoes, yr boring music sends the mind racing for something else to think about and the converse ad you're looking at sends it right to the thought of buying shoes. i'm really glad i don't remember what either of these lame bands were called |
