Crap Music Releases 2014 (and other let downs)
War Paint Self-Titled. Whoa. This record is a totally boring let down compared to what they had achieved live. Their first record was ok, but it seems that is their recording style. Very different from the stage show, and I'm just totally not interested. The first two songs are fucking KICK ASS, its like, why doesn't the rest of this record sound like that?

(bump)
St. Vincent self-titled.. I like REALLY REALLY want to like her but I just can't get into it.. Its not like its necessarily bad, I just really don't find it any good. Classify this in "other let downs" |
everything in hiphop and rap

really? I dig it. Birth in Reverse though.....that song is perfect imo. There are (more than) a few songs that I find quite forgettable(generic)...but I think she's definitely talented....and she really puts on a great show. |
a variety of people and the night life here past months.
on the other hand, some other people keep proving to be further away from a let down, like years of light away, so you know everything is part of the procedure. blahblahblahzzzzzzzzzz |

They were awful and forgettable when I saw them. Goes to show what being "connected" can do for a bland and inoffensive band.
Not even very "dreamy" to my ears; I certainly heard little of the supposed Siouxsie influence. They sounded super 90s to me, and not in a good way. Like Luscious Jackson with flangers. Naked emperor crap. |

Who Warpaint? That is what sucks the most because in 2009 they were something epic hence why they were my main motivation in make this thread Quote:
I didn't totally NOT like this record, its just that those first two tracks reflect what I've liked most about Warpaint, and indeed, what I like most I REALLY REALLY dig. I just have come to realize (a) I don't really like their studio records and (b) I really just like what they were doing live in 2009 and I'm ok with that ;) |
St. Vincent for sure, that shit gets so much hype and love on the internet but the entire back half of the album does not contain memorable songs. It's really frustrating. Don't know what anyone was doing expecting anything from Warpaint but Beck's album was unfortunate to me
|
I think I've listened to about 1 minute of a St Vincent song before I decided they were shit. It really shouldn't take the length of an album to get reliable clues.

I'd say no. In ESSENCE they are radically different, but in common practice there is not much that divides.. Hip hop is more focused on the artistic aspect of the music, rap with the message/sound/production. The overall SOUND is what is not radically different, but the approach is as different as night and day I think.. |
hip hop is a noun. Rap is a verb.
|
so what bullshit boring music did you listen to this year? this thread......man, sucks ass and is depressing.

Gotta go ahead and disagree with you on that one bro. To Rap is to perform an action; namely, to engage in a vocal & verbal form of communication that is essentially a style of singing. But it's really more of a specific type of lyrical delivery, containing elements of poetry and song derived from scat and be-bop, where words and sounds take on some of the role of percussion instruments. As opposed to most styles of singing, rap acts as more of a metronomic devise than a melodic one. But rap is also a genre of music, or has been in the past. In the early '90s, for instance, when lyrics were so dominant as to make the musical elements of the genre kind of incidental, "Rap" was used to describe most music that contained rapping. But I think that the evolution of electronic music, specifically trip hop, DJ's began to cultivate a unique brand of music that now plays just as large a part in the greater genre as the vocals do. That really took off, and currently O don't believe "rap" is a suitable descriptive term for the genre. Hip-Hop seems to be the end result of 20-30 years of musical evolution. When DJ's and producers started to craft sonic identities based on their personal styles, they were reaching back to the early days of the genre, and imitating the beat-making techniques that early rappers used (tape decks & vinyl records, samples and other things that people who couldn't afford drum sets and didn't know how to play instruments used to keep time and punctuate their vocal delivery) so in a sense hip hop existed, then kinda stopped existing, then came back as a high quality makeover of itself. Now the music and the vocals are two inseparable parts of the genre, which is why rap isn't a valid substitute term for hip-hop. Instrumentals like those championed by J Dilla, FlyLo, Dibia$e, Dan the Automator, Dj Shadow, etc. are all examples of music that is part of the same musical movement as everything from Grandmaster Flash to Yeezy, but none of them are "rap" artists. They're certainly hip hop though. And the same would be true of an unaccompanied rapper free styling over nothing. It's all hip hop. Most hip hop contains at rap, but the two are not really the same thing. It's just the colloquial semantics surrounding the trends in the culture that have made it this way. Not any hard & fast rule. Call it what you want. |
see!!! Severian is a team player.
he makes genuine posts instead of claiming what he ate today. |
Wow I sounded like such a whopping big d-bag that I could have passed for an anthropology student.. My apologies.

I think Warpaint got a bad wrap. I know their album was a little mid-'90s, lacking the promise of their live performances and the deep dark L.A. cool of “the Fool,” but it wasn't insultingly bad or anything. It was one of the year's first big indie rock releases, and it kinda got it's ass whooped by titanic monsters like Thee Silver Mt. Zion's “Fuck off, Get Free...” and the really hyped up Perfect Pussy debut.
Both of those records are, of course, infinitely better than Warpaint's s/t offering, but they had a lot of industry eyes on them and I'm sure they felt some pressure to perform, leading to atypically picky, clean production and a sound that wasn't really their own. So I'm not gonna judge them. Nirvana had the same experience when they made “Nevermind”, only with better results. |
My hope for this thread when I bugged the shit out of louder to start it was that new releases would be announced and discussed by the big hip hop fans on the board. I wanted it to be a place where people suggested new music, and everybody listened and weighed in.
But we know too much about eachother's tastes now, and half the users here would probably never check out an album I recommended just because they know where my loyalties lie. So Kanye haters probably never listen to my recommendations, even if the recommended artists sound nothing like Kanye (which they probably never bother to find out) But I ain't mad atcha. Let's join hands and pray, shall we? |

No idea how anyone else will take it, but I find it quite enjoyable. I posted in the "best of 2014" thread. |

Who's the chick? I saw it while I was in the record store the other day, but I don't seem to remember her name or recognize her face. I'm glad you approve. I thought pillowfight was so-so. Hopefully this is better. |
What the fuck? I thought I was posting in the hip hop thread! Wow. Shows how much attention I'm paying to things these days.

Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0935541/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Descriptions say they took a lot of inspiration from 60s Italian pop music, so YMMV |

What's YMMV. My eyes are bad so at first I thought you were making an updated \m/ symbol. Then I thought you were saying "Yummy"... then I started trying to guess at what acronym it might be, and came up with jack shit. I'm super curious about this, and lord knows I can't afford to miss any new shifts in internet youth slang. I'm not cool enough. |
he meant your mileage may vary which is not youth anything

Agreed totally BUT... Quote:
That is entirely the fucking problem. Their live material is so fucking epic and typically the same kind of Los Angeles that gave birth to Mazzy Star that its almost insulting how bland Self-Titled is. As was mentioned earlier, the first two tracks on this record are fucking totally kick fucking ass, I just wish the ENTIRE record sounded like them. To be sure, I don't own The Fool either, but I have a few bootleg recordings of 2009 era concerts that are that material but with the edge and underlying fierceness that their studio albums are always lacking. Quote:
It got its ass kicked because it tried to sound like a Haim record and there is already enough Haim to go around at Pitchfork ;) Quote:
Though, the fundamental indeed ontological difference between these two records is Warpaint Self-Titled turned off the distortion effect on their guitarwork after the second song on the record, meanwhile Kurt more or less kept his foot on the stompbox the entire album (polly and something in the way aside) |
True. Plus Nirvana's an infinitely better band. Word.
And I agree more or less about Warpaint. I just want to give the band the benefit of the doubt and assume that pressure to make something classic was what deadened their album. Hopefully they stop caring what people think so they can make it as a band and not putter out. |
I originally liked Death Vessel's 2014 album, but now I think it's overly dramatic music for suicidal 21 year-olds. The singer was apparently castrated. He sounds like a female child of about 6, singing opera.
Blech. Why would SubPop put out such filth? Cuz their really have no quality standards anymore? Oh yeah, that's true. |
Disappointment: young money 2
|
I like a few of the st vincent songs but its about 50/50 with the biring ones
she annoys me though. Very calculated and precise and not alot of energy/life. I need to give silver mt zion another listen. I remember the 2nd song blew me awaybut the rest were pretty forgetable |
Quote:
It's my favorite release of theirs since the Pretty Little Lightning Paw & This Is Our Punk Rock EP's. Meaning, I basically think it's their best album. I kinda let myself forget about it too, but I have gone back to it since and I think it really is a kickass album. |
Controversial but the new silver mt zion didn't do anything for me. Vocals sound like something out of a crumby arcade fire tribute band.
Also the new mogwai was massively disappointing. That satanic led zeppelin sample thing was the most cringeworthy thing to grace my ears in a while. |
Wiz Khalifa's new album sucks

keep meaning to check this. I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I love Automator. I love 60's cocktail and Exotica music. I think it will be something I'll dig. |
