whats the best band with more than 20 studio albums?

i mean id like to avoid a slew of solo artists but include them if you must. i mostly just want to avoid a bunch of solo jazz responses like coltrane, davis, sun ra, etc.

1.sonic youth
2.melvins
3.ruins

pretty close call

Glice 02.03.2007 06:29 AM

The Fall win for me, but I reckon if you include the various Otomo Yoshihide groups and all of Keiji Haino's groups they would also win. Difficult.

Toilet & Bowels 02.03.2007 06:32 AM

sun ra had the arkestra that doesn't really count as solo

i vote for haino.

Androol 02.03.2007 06:52 AM

hmm fair enough. i have to admit i know next to nothing about sun ra.

Danny Himself 02.03.2007 07:23 AM

Daniel Johnston must have over 20 albums by now, right? If so I'd go for him and SY.

my friend babysat him and jad fair one time. he had to keep daniel from eating burritos straight out of the freezer.

Danny Himself 02.03.2007 08:22 AM

Haha, rad. How long ago was that?

about 7 years ago. our other friend chris bultman was in a band with them at the time called the lucky sperms. so thats why they were over at the house. the friend who babysat them had only one instruction which was not to give offer them any pot.

the fall

have sonic youth really made so many albums? but if you say so... acid mothers temple probably too.

habibtheantiamericanbitch 02.03.2007 06:41 PM

SY having 20+ 'FULL-LENGTH STUDIO' albums???? not yet. counting the SY e.p. and Ciccone, that's 16. you might include syr4 which is certainly full length and studio..... if you count the many other e.p.'s, live releases, and comps we're past 50......

Savage Clone 02.03.2007 06:48 PM

I would have a hard time choosing between Nurse With Wound or the Legendary Pink Dots.

Hawkwind and Gong would have been strong contenders, but they both had diminishing returns and increasing levels of cartoonish cheese factor as time went on. NWW and LPD remain consistently interesting for the most part.

lmfao my friends right here and he said jad fair actually left the house eventually to go see goonies at the alamo theater but daniel was apparently under strict orders not to leave the house. my friend, chad hopper, said it was easy though because all he had to do was talk about the beatles. they also watched part of the legend of billy jean.

huh youre the second person at least to say them. i also posted this on relapse. i had never even heard of NWW before.

Savage Clone 02.03.2007 07:13 PM

I've been obsessed with them for about 20 years.

porkmarras 02.03.2007 07:13 PM

It would have to be Nurse With Wound for me too as you never know what to expect with them.

porkmarras 02.03.2007 07:14 PM

Current 93 would come a close second.

BORE...........

And if they don't have twenty, then count all their closely related offshoots. Then we're talking like 2000 studio albums!

Agreed, and then there's Made in the U.S.A., which did get released by Rhino as a full length album sort of. So we're up to 18, so they don't qualify for the 20 criteria. If they did, I'd say them.

So, I'd have to say Sun Ra and the Arkestra. Forced to pick a "rock" band, I'd go with the Legendary Pink Dots, who are actually putting out stuff now that I find at the top of their game.

  20. syr 1 - 23:00
  21. syr 2 - 28:30
  22. syr 3 - 58:00

Well, SYR 6 is a Live recording, so that doesn't count as studio. But, yeah, SYR 3 is certainly full length, and there's still Made in the U.S.A. to contend with too. The Destroyed Room is a whole 'nother debate, but if they do qualify, they do still remain my favorite band (they do that either way). The Arkestra and LPD remain close 2nd and 3rds.

Androol 02.04.2007 03:10 AM

isnt syr 6 new material though? thats what im most concerned about. i just dont want a bunch of bands with all these live albums that are just the Lps rehashed.

i dont know i just consider made in usa a soundtrack but ive only listened to it once or twice. id probably include instrument for fugazi so i guess this one would make sense.

but even without syr6 its still 21

Glice 02.04.2007 05:59 AM

I met a chap who was into the LPD once. He was an utter prick. One of the most cuntish cunts I ever had the misfortune of talking to. I've not really investigated them much because of his cuntishness. Perhaps I should? How close are Einsteurzende to having 20? I imagine NNCK or SHOTM are probably beyond 20 now... or are they? NNCK would definitely be my 2nd place to the Fall.

Androol 02.04.2007 06:06 AM

i suck at initials

NNCK would be at 20 if you counted live stuff. I think they probably only have 2 or 3 actual 'studio' albums. But only counting studio stuff with NNCK is sort of unfair Because most of the albums are recorded live. Anyway, they're probably at 20 by now...I have 11 or 12 or their records and I have by no means all of them.

King Crimson's only really good albums came out between 1972 and 1974. That's three albums outta 20+.
