NEW Melvins out on June 1: The Bride Screamed Murder

Anybody excited about this?

http://www.themelvins.net/

atsonicpark 04.03.2010 01:53 PM

sure. I've liked their last few albums quite a bit. I'm sure it won't be anything too different or whatever, but they always surprise me in some way.

ann ashtray 04.03.2010 03:39 PM

Very excited.

noisereductions 04.03.2010 04:45 PM

I love the Melvins.

DanielCarlson 04.11.2010 07:23 AM

Check this out. Short previews of all the songs:

andrei 04.11.2010 09:05 AM

not too excited after this preview, but we'll see when the record will come out :)

DanielCarlson 04.11.2010 10:50 AM

No, I'm not too excited either... it sounded good for the most part, but nothing too special. But who knows, maybe it'll blow my brains out when I finally hear the whole record.

SONIC GAIL 04.12.2010 08:41 AM

Fuck yes Fuck yes fuck yes.....I cannot wait. I am trying to convince Ryan to take me to New Orleans so we can see the show. It is the closest town to us that they are touring. Probability of this really happening is low. But it is a nice thought to have.

washer 05.05.2010 04:34 AM

Leaked.

Damian 05.05.2010 05:55 AM

I fuckin love The Melvins! YES!

viewtiful alan redux 05.05.2010 08:31 AM

As long as it means the melvins are going on tour, it can be an album of note for note air supply covers as far as I'm concerned.

tesla69 05.05.2010 08:34 AM

I haven't been excited about the Melvins since they kicked Lorax out of the group.

DanielCarlson 05.10.2010 10:57 AM

It's pretty good. Better than Nude With Boots fo sho. But I miss the slow, ridiculously heavy Melvins that I love. I want that Melvins back. This is good, solid rock, but nothing fantastic.

ni'k 05.10.2010 11:03 AM

yeah its just not great. but they still have potential greatness in them, they could still pull off something as good as senile animal.

and if you get the chance to see melvins live do it. i saw them in 06 and it was the best gig ive ever been at. which considering how few ive seen isnt saying much, altho my friend who had spent the past 2 years jet settin around europe and the US takin in hundreds of shows said he'd never seen anything come close to how good it was.

and funnily, they played belfast the night before and apparently it sucked big time. the people i know that went there said it was an absolute abomination. haha.

Ghostchase 05.14.2010 12:53 AM

Melvins/ISIS split! Awesome!

atsonicpark 05.14.2010 02:08 AM

Two albums before this were great. Two drummers.. awesome.

This one is alright.

ann ashtray 05.16.2010 03:03 AM

I'm seeing them w/ Isis next month. It's carved in stone and i can't wait.

They always put on a terrific show.

atsonicpark 05.27.2010 01:58 PM

I really really dug Nude With Boots, but A Senile Animal was GREAT, one of their best imo.

I've listened to this one 3 times and it's actually one of their worst albums, I think. I just can't get into it, I'd even listen to their often-hard-to-listen-to poor "experimental" stuff over it. Having said that, it's still the Melvins, so it's got some interesting stuff on it.

noisereductions 05.27.2010 02:06 PM

(A) SENILE ANIMAL was really, really good. Much better than NUDE WITH BOOTS. I actually loved the live version of HOUDINI. Probably more than the original album in all honesty. I haven't heard the new one yet. i'm excited though.

yeah

ann ashtray 06.03.2010 05:08 AM

Listened to it yesterday. The first track is a bit odd, almost militant in the vocal delivery. I'm sure it was deliberate.

Not a bad album. It's no Houdini or Stag. It's no Pigs of the Roman Empire, either. But it's still the Melvins and they are always interesting.

viewtiful alan redux 06.04.2010 09:29 AM

One review I've read of it said that its the best album from this lineup. Anyone care to challenge or qualify that assertion? I'm gonna be out near my usuall record store today and am trying to decide if I should get it.

atsonicpark 06.04.2010 09:35 AM

Compared to the 2 before it, it is pretty bad. The other 2 were amazing. this album is pretty quirky and interesting but just doesn't hold up under multiple listens. If you're a huge melvins fan, you might be able to find some worth in it, but it's pretty yucky. I don't dig it at all after about 5 listens, really.

viewtiful alan redux 06.04.2010 09:38 AM

What is it like stylistically? I was under the impression it was pretty agressively heavy.

ni'k 06.04.2010 09:38 AM

the first song starts, and its like FUCK YES MELVISN FUCKS YOU ALLS!!1111111111 and you start headbanging and kicking doors in cos it starts so fucking cool and then they give up and try this quirky a cappella thing and don't finish making the song good. then the rest is boring. the end.

It's their least heavy album in years. Who gave you this "impression"? Some shitty review where everyone kisses Melvins's asses because they "respect" them? Seriously, it's probably their most boring and shit album, and tons of it is just the boring experimental crap they usually relegate to their non-"big" studio releases. The military chanting on song one alone is probably the worst thing they've ever done. Also, the My Sharona thing. Just really sloppy and poor.

atsonicpark 06.04.2010 09:44 AM

Seriously, just go buy a Bohren Und Der Club of Gore album instead.

viewtiful alan redux 06.04.2010 09:45 AM

I got this impression from a free newspaper that had a write up on an upcoming melvins concert... it was basically an advertisement disguised as music journalism.
Yeah, I'm with you Adam, The Melvins sort of tend to fail at making compelling experimental music... hell they usually manage to ruin albums with it.

ni'k 06.04.2010 09:48 AM

you get the impression they have a hard time keeping themselves interested, and a lot of that experimental stuff is sort of half vanity/fuck about.

they are obviously too poor/lazy be able to do anything else.

they are one of those bands i know in a few years will sound really old and ill barely want to listen to them, but they do have some great stuff. you could make a really good 2cd best of.

atsonicpark 06.04.2010 09:52 AM

They're just one of those bands who are pleasant to put on but I never have the urge to jam out to or anything. BUT really, A SENILE ANIMAL and NUDE WITH BOOTS were their best albums in years. This one is one of their worst ever I think.

viewtiful alan redux 06.04.2010 09:53 AM

I get the feeling they can't write enough actual songs, so they fall into the old trap of meandering around for 9 plus minutes to fill up space. All of their albums (save bullhead and lysol) would have been much better ep's.

atsonicpark 06.04.2010 09:56 AM

Definitely agree. And also ,I tend to like band's ep's better, period.

BULLHEAD is really awesome though, can you imagine how they would be regarded today if they'd stopped after that one?

is it worth buying today?

ni'k 06.04.2010 11:52 AM

no. really it's not. it's barely worth downloading after the first half on the first song. save your money for something better.

DanielCarlson 06.04.2010 06:24 PM

It has some good parts, sure, but I wouldn't pay for it. It has some interesting ideas, but they don't know what to do with them. Listen to Lysol or Bullhead or Houdini or whatever instead, this one is pretty bad. I listened to it again today, and I didn't even have the interest to finish listening to the whole thing.

The music industry's collapse is good news for the Melvins, the defiantly uncommercial "thud-rock" band that just cracked the U.S. pop album chart for the first time in its 26-year career. The group, whose heavy guitar riffs and mumbled vocals paved the way for fellow Seattle-area bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden, grabbed the last spot on Billboard's Top 200 chart published Wednesday.
It achieved this feat by selling just 2,809 copies of "The Bride Screamed Murder," its 19th album. With another 2,000 units, they would have breached the top half of the chart.
Exactly five years ago, the threshold for inclusion in the Top 200 was about 5,000 copies. Since then, U.S. album sales have halved, and the industry last month suffered its slowest week since the early 1970s, according to a Billboard estimate.
While the Melvins' debut chart ranking therefore comes with an asterisk of sorts, the milestone managed to stun its members. "Top 200 what?" singer/guitarist Roger "Buzz" Osborne said via email.
The band's biggest release is 1993's "Houdini," which was partly produced by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, one of their biggest fans. It has sold about 110,000 copies. The 1996 release "Stag" posted the band's best opening week after selling almost 4,000 albums. The band has sold 538,000 albums since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.
