1. Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian
2. Wavves - Wavvves 3. Zu - Carboniferous 4. Black Dice - Repo 5. Dan Deacon - Bromst 6. Experimental Dental School - Forest Field Those are the ones I've really liked. Mi Ami's Watersports is pretty good, if inconsistent. The new Oh Sees is alright, pretty much identical to last year's effort, but less catchy. |
really wanna hear the new Pan American, had no idea there was one tbh! same with Suishiou No Fune
Tim Hecker, Animal Collective, Sir Richard Bishop, Zu and Emeralds have all released albums I've really enjoyed... I'm missing one or two others, but apart from those nothing's realyy impressed me that much. Wavves is OK I guess, Super Roots 10 is not bad, but not on my favourites unfortunately. There's a few I'd like to hear that I still haven't as well, like Sun Araw, Pocahaunted and Ignatz. And Pan American and SNF. Lookin' forward to those. Wolves in the Throne Room have a new one too which I'm hoping is good. |
I am so not sold on Wavves it's ridiculous.
|
^^ same here

what? is that already out? fuck me running, I HAVE TO HAVE IT !!! |
I'm glad i'm not the only one who isn't in love with the new Wavves. I liked the first album better, this one has a few good hooks but outside of that, the same old thing. I was kind of pissed to see the dude in that band plays his guitar clean live, very lifeless sound.

how much dedicated time do you actually spend listening to one of these? my math shows you've purchased/obtained/stolen a new album almost every other day (83 days so far this year) with Sundays off. |
Enough.
It's not like listening to a 30 (or thereabouts) minute album is a huge commitment and half of that list is ambient shit I fall asleep to. Also, not to mention I drive a good 1-2 hours a day, which is when I listen to most of my music. I know it's an awful thing that I have heard a lot of music that has come out this year, but oh well. |
1. john frusciante - the empyrean
2. experimental dental school - forest field 3. emeralds - what happened 4. mono - hymn to the immortal wind 5. mass of the fermenting dregs - world is yours I've not listened to much this year yet. |
I've heard about ten albums so far this year. The only two I've liked are AC's new one and Little Hells by Marissa Nadler.
|
I haven't bought an awful lot of new music this year so far.
Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind Atom - Liedgut Wouter Van Veldhoven - Four Simple Songs for Five Dead Bumblebees BJ Nilsson & Stilluppsteypa - Man From Deep River Loop - Fade Out reissue Loop - Heavens End reissue Johann Johannsson - Fordlandia Umrijeti Za Strojem - Mrtav Medji Hitoshi Koji - Ezo I've heard that there's a 10" collaboration between Sunn o))) and Pan Sonic covering Suicide's 'Che', but I can't find it anywhere. If anyone comes across it could you let me know? Cheers |
Thanks for sharing your lists, I'm not up to date on music myself... so far I've just checked out Emeralds and I'm loving them....I'll be perusing some more in a bit!
|
I thought the Wavves album came out in 2008. Not bitching, just pointing it out.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
The Bad Plus & Wendy Lewis - For All I Care Doom - Born Like This Minty Fresh Beats - Jaydiohead ...that's kind of it for now, as far as "great" in my mind. |

when did this come out??? and on waht label? |
i forgot what records i like this year.
|
The only album from 2009 that I've listened to is World is Yours by Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. It was great.

Wavves - Wavves came out in September 2008, I believe. His new album, Wavvves, came out February 3rd of this year. |

It's on planet mu, as is most of his stuff. I d/l'ed a leak, but I'm probably going to buy it, I actually buy most of his stuff. It took me a few listens to really get into it but now I love it. It's REALLY, uh... "acidy". Here's a (admittingly somewhat confusing) link either way: http://narod.ru/disk/6885559000/f-mp3.rar.html (it's all in a different language, but just type in the numbers, click the green button, then click the link on the next page) |
great thread.
so far: Zu - Carboniferous The Bad Plus & Wendy Lewis - For All I Care Faust - C'est Compliqué |
John Zorn - The Crucible
(it came out in 2009 in europe...but i guess in america in 2008, or?) |
i guess this is the year of rock: SY, Dino Jr., Wilco, Neil Young and maybe Built to Spill will release new tunes. New Magik Markers and Tortoise can't be bad either.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was blown away by FOR ALL I CARE. I think "Comfortably Numb" and "Radio Cure" are total standouts. And I love the f'd up tempo changes in "Lithium." |
Albums / EPs I heard that I enjoyed (in no order):
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion Mountains - Choral DJ Signify - Of Cities Psychic Ills - Mirror Eye These Are Powers - All Aboard Future Wavves - Wavvves WYLD WYZRDZ - Light Upon Light, Wave Upon Wave Excepter - STREAM 58 Excepter - STREAM 57 (I prefer 58) Dälek - Gutter Tactics Loren Connors & Jim O'Rourke - Two Nice Catholic Boys Abe Vigoda - Reviver EP WEAVE! - WEAVE! Telepathe - Dance Mother Zu - Carboniferous Emeralds - What Happened Eric Copeland - RGAG NLF3 - Ride On A Brand New Time Tim Hecker - An IMaginary Country Yagya - Rigning |
Will mention more albums when i get home, but honestly my front runner for album of the year at this point is Neige's new album Amesoeurs -S/T. If people on this forum don't listen to this album, I might have to quit/never return.

The flaming lips cover is great too. |
Nothing People "Late Night" LP
Dan Melchior und Das Menace "Thankyou Very Much" 2xLP The Hunches "Exit Dreams" LP Ratas del Vaticano "Mocosos Pateticos" LP and the forthcoming Eat Skull "Wild & Inside" LP are setting bar so far... |
All I see are a bunch of names. I never know what new albums to listen to unless it is a band I'm already familiar with.
|
The simplest thing to do is just look up some of these artists on last.fm and if they sound interesting to you, check 'em out.
|
i just buy stuff from certain labels i like or something i have read from another source. i did that pre internet and i still do that. i almost never listen to anything before i buy it.
plus, i'm using my roommates computer so i can't download anything. soon i'll have the internet on my phone, but that doesn't help me music wise. |
Yeah, never paid much attention to Emeralds until this pretty unanimous endorsement. Stunning stuff.

Don't forget the new Lightning Bolt album. |

Yeah, they're great! Someone somewhere is going to disagree with me, but it reminds me of a cross between Japanther and the Coachwhips. Who are two bands I LOVE, so.... The production, the fun keyboard farts, the simplicity, the awesome melodies, the energy, etc. Just really great stuff. One of the bands worth all the hype... to me. |

I must admit I never really understood the amount of hate against Franz Ferdinand. I mean they're certainly not geniuses, but I like them. I enjoyed the first one, the second was still good, and though I was expecting to hate the new one because come on, three albums of just the same thing can get really boring, well, it still works imo. A pleasant album - not really more, but not really less. |
