Ho! Another WU LYF fan?

I recommended that here a few months ago and got tons of bad feedback, both on the board and in PM's. "Thanks, now I know what the most pretentious music ever recorded sounds like" was my personal favorite. :)

I like them. They're anthemic and epic as all hell, alternately bringing to mind beautiful mountain vistas, pre-emo screamage, and graffitied bathroom walls.

Pretentious? Well yah! But who said pretentious music is bad?

E. Noisefield 12.10.2011 11:05 AM

Other favorites of mine are Ty Segall, Tom Waits, Kurt Vile, Thurston (der), the various Wu-offshoote (Legendary Weapons in particular) and Mogwai's kickass new album, which is the best thing they've done in a number of years. Jackie0O Mohterfucker's new album is up there too; it's not the best thing in their catalog, but it's definitely worth checking out.

E. Noisefield 12.10.2011 11:11 AM

Someone needs to put together a list of all the worthwhile releases of 2011 in every genre, just so I know what the fuck this year's been about. Also, so I can check some of them out, put them on my list, and feel cool.

Glice 12.10.2011 11:38 AM

9 pages - knock yourself out

'Every genre' would be pushing it for that thread though. Still, probably enough to keep you busy for a while.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 12.10.2011 11:46 AM

I seem to be in the minority, but I feel that Deerhoof's album Vs Evil is way too overlooked.

I think the world sounds & polyrhythms on it are amazing. It took me awhile to really get the album, but after I got into it & also saw them play it live, I realized how impressive it was.

WU LYF are terrible don't listen to them Hayden Aschehole. Most of the other suggestions here are kind of way obvious.

But yes go with that James Ferraro and these:
Gauntlet Hair - Gauntlet Hair
True Widow - As High As The Highest Heavens...
Ponytail - Do Whatever You Want All The Time!
Longmont Potion Castle - 8
Toddle - The Shimmer
Volcano The Bear - Hotbites Live At The Nightlight
Snowman - Absence
Alvarius B - Baroque Primitiva

Everything else I liked this year is too ~metal~ and ~droney~ for your taste doe.

I'm not making my end of year list until the new Kayo Dot comes out. It would be blasphemy for my fanboy status.

EDIT: OH ALSO I FORGOT THERE'S A NEW PETE SWANSON THAT FUCKING RULES AND IT'S YOUR DUTY AS A FELLOW YELLOW SWANS FAN TO LISTEN TO IT.

I will admit that WU LYF is an... er... acquired taste. They're super pretentious and all the songs on the album sound the same. At first I too thought it was shit. Carbon copy pitchfork fair.

But for some reason bits and pieces of their songs started getting stuck in my head. After just one listen, too. I played the album once and didn't touch it for months... but their choruses kept popping up in my head.

They're really anthemic (anthematic?) and their hooks are reallly effective.
Granted, I honestly think they're this year's Animal Collective derivative, and that (even though they don't sound like them) they try to emulate the melodic scream techniques of earlier ac albums. But whatever, I think they're alright. Not mind blowing, but definitely one of the better albums I've heard this year.

I haven't heard a lot of albums this year though. :(

Jesus, I've been so out of the loop this year that I didn't even know they had a new album!

I'm kind of an on-again-off-again Deerhoof fan, as in I listen to them like crazy for about a month and then wear myself out on them so much that I can't listen to them for a year. But when I'm into them they're one of my favorite bands, and I can't believe I didn't notice this!

How does it rank against their best (which, naturally, are Reveille and Friend Opportunity)???

I think 2011 has been great year, because SY, Thurston, P.J Harvey, Kate Bush, 22 Pistepirkko, Regina and Tom Waits has released an album (Thurston and Kate two albums!). There has been years when nothing great has released.

I can't afford to order it yet but I'll buy it soon... I was thinking about getting it with the bonus 3" cd, it also has 22 tracks on right? must be very short tracks then!

i think i read somewhere that the 3" cd didn't have 22 tracks, i'm not sure though. either way i think it's short, but apparently it's quite atmospheric/ambient (less beats than on usual mwc tracks) so i think it can be really interesting to hear..

This Gonk edition features 22 tracks of Confusing English Electronic Music, and has an engaging picture of a rather lovely gonk on the cover. But be careful. While the outsides may look sweet, the insides may be sinister. These tracks are also of suitable length to use as ringing tones upon a mobile telephone. And of course, Miniature 8cm CDs are not to be played on the majority of laptop CD drives, so do bear that in mind.

SYRFox 12.11.2011 09:57 AM

seems like i was wrong then :D they must be short then, yes. i'll have to find out whether my drive is able to play mini cds too...

SYRFox 12.11.2011 10:10 AM

nope, Paris is a bit far from where I live, especially as I'm in the middle of my mock exams... what is even more frustrating is that I miss Glenn Branca playing near me tonight because of these exams :/

stu666 12.11.2011 10:16 AM

good luck with yr exams dude, that sucks about missing the shows... sorry for hijacking yr thread Hayden!
