top 10 electronica artists...

for those of us who love the sounds produced by nothing more than some computers and machines. what are the artists that totally make you gah gah over electronic music.

(note: no noise or power electronics artists, that would complicate the topic, only things like electronica, idm, glitch, techno, microsound, ambient electronics, etc..)

for me:

1. autechre
2. fennesz
3. tim hecker
4. labradford
5. aphex twin
6. eluvium
7. oval
8. squarepusher
9. gas
10. keith fullerton whitman

a very well-balanced list, actually. I'm happy to see Labradford being mentioned there, as from my point of view they're one of the most underrated bands ever. Not so sure if they fit into the 'electronica' hive, though. Keith Fullerton Whitman is top-notch too.

My personal list would include more ambient-oriented stuff though, such as Shuttle 358, Taylor Deupree, Gareth Hardwick or the ever-genuine Aidan Baker, my personal pick of the month.

6. eluvium

Actually, Eluvium is generally known as 'Arch-Bending' an offshoot of electronica.

Everyneurotic 07.16.2008 10:24 AM

tons of noise and power electronics artists use analog equipment; although they are synthetic sounds, they are not electronic.

Florya 07.16.2008 10:27 AM

TG
Nurse With Wound
Kontour
Cabaret Voltaire
Chris & Cosey
Coil
Threshold Houseboys Choir
The Orb
Kraftwerk
Cornelius

blunderbuss 07.16.2008 10:30 AM

I can't be bothered to do a top ten, but I'll give a mention to The Young Gods, Plastikman, and Pan Sonic.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 10:33 AM

Boards Of Canada gets mucho respect in the Melly household. I haven't listened to the Black Dog stuff in ages, but I really used to like that.

excellent list as always mi amigo. ive always considered pita to be noise, but i suppose hes more extreme electronics. he rules anyways, ktl is one of my favorite newer bands.

anyways, i trade in squarepusher for venetian snares, he totally slipped my mind.

I realise it's de rigor [stat] of bed-wetting indie pricks to ask 'what the fuck does [genre x] actually mean?', but electronica really is a cunt of a term.

I've never seen Erasure live - I believe that's a particularly life-affirming experience in Total Gayness.

Absolute, wall-to-wall amazingness. If by 'gay' you mean 'unapologetically brilliant, with no concessions to amateurism or rubbishness' then yes, they are gay.

Then again, I'm a much better queer than you. You just fancy men. You've gotta up your ga(y)me.

No beard, jumper or pipe, but a noble effort.

There's a great one of Han-Gerrit von Stockhausen...

He was a top u-boat ace, apparently.

Ah, Mr Lucier. Some absolute turd in his back-catalogue.

sarramkrop 07.16.2008 11:21 AM

Everything I've ever heard by him was a gem. I couldn't find a suitable picture of Allan Bryant, so here's an exceptionally good one of MEV at work:

^^^sarram, I coudn't help but post this - the Soviet-era ANS synth:

I've got an album from the early 80's on Melodiya with various Russian composers having a go on this - some good stuff on that, if I recall.

sarramkrop 07.16.2008 11:55 AM

Coil used that too.
