any fans in here?

Savage Clone 01.21.2007 02:17 PM

Coolest-looking man on earth.

Much praise for much of his music.
A true inspiration.

sun city girl 01.21.2007 03:18 PM

yeah, i'm a fan too!

jon boy 01.21.2007 03:19 PM

indeed he is amazing.

val-holla-ing 01.21.2007 04:51 PM

he and johnny cash and the guys from suicide should've killed off will smith and tommy lee jones to be in that movie "men in black"

Glice 01.21.2007 05:09 PM

Haino is one of the few people who makes me think I don't want to make music. I'm surprised anyone who hears him can bear making, by comparison, utterly pointless and abysmal music. Makes 99.99% of everything else inferior.

Toilet & Bowels 01.21.2007 09:20 PM

i frequently get naked and rub myself with black substances while i scream 'to those headed to yonder void, i say "not that way".'

does anyone think that keiji haino has a girlfriend, or like me do you think he doesn't concern himself with trivial matters of the flesh?

pantophobia 01.21.2007 10:40 PM

I said it before somewhere, but i will say it here

i listened to Pathetique, and my mind melted

and he needs to come to DC, i will put him up in a nice hotel and free food at the Florida Ave Grill, Ben's Chili Bowl, or the Tastee Diner, his choice

Phlegmscope 01.22.2007 12:15 AM

There's some uspeakable darkness in keiji even when's enjoying some ice cream (is that chocolate?).

porkmarras 01.22.2007 12:26 AM

That's one hell of a cool picture there!

porkmarras 01.22.2007 01:07 AM

Just found this.Email this guy if you want the recording.

KEIJI HAINO & COIL

Play The Blues [no label, 1CD]

Live at Mandala 2 in Kichijoji, Tokyo, Sept 28, 2003.
Haino is the name to follow in underground circles in Japan. Notorious for the noise he makes on his guitars, this short 45-min set has him with Coil stripping the blues to the bone. You’ve never heard these blues standards played like this before.
The band are Keiji Haino [vocals, gtr, harmonica], Natsuki Kido [gtr], Takeharu Hayakawa [bs] and Eiji Tanaka [drms]. This is a fine DAT audience recording, never released before.

Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (these are high quality, stereo MP3s - sample rate of 192 kibit/s). As far as we can ascertain, none of these tracks have been officially released.

These tracks are no longer available for download. Kindly email us at singbigo@singnet.com.sg if you want to download these tracks at a later time.

Praise be. Last year's New Rap album with Yoshida Tatsuya was especially great.

Hiatus! Pray God it's a hiatus. Hiatus.

Toilet & Bowels 01.22.2007 04:06 PM

just so people know, that's not the coil of jon balance & co fame.

fushitsusha is still a somewhat ongoing concern, they played some shows in 2005 at least.

racehorse 01.22.2007 04:55 PM

i've avoided him long enough, so what would you recommend for me to buy first? i checked out fushitsusha but alot of their records go for extortionate prices...
i already own the record he did with derek bailey, which is fucking amazing.
any ideas?

Glice 01.22.2007 05:29 PM

I'd go for... um... anything really. Anything. He doesn't do bad records. Perhaps a solo rather than a collaborative record? Sometimes the collaborative records fall foul of other people not being as good as him.

I'm actually completely dumbfounded as to what to recommend. I think you'll either get it or not. Fushitsusha is the place to start, really.

as much as i love fushitsusha - and i do indeed love fushitsusha - i'm beginning to think haino is most interesting without the noisy guitar freakouts and without accompaniment. the recent hurdy gurdy albums have been particularly excellent, as have the quieter guitar and vocal ones.

i agree it's difficult to recommend haino albums, but the one's on PSF tend to be more perfect than the others in my experience. Some personal favorites are watashi dake, affection, and nijiumu. More recently the collaboration with Sitar Tah!, both black blues albums, and revealed to none as yet... are high on my list of favorites.

voided 01.22.2007 06:44 PM

i think some times the collabs can leave me wanting a little more.. (Brotzmann/ Hano/ Haino comes to mind)
-Affection psf 23 is a really nice solo guitar record
-Nijjiumu era of sad wings PSF 31 is a tripped out strange atmospheric release nanjo of highrise plays bass on this i seem to recall
-Knead 1st PSF 128 fantastic disc with the ruins.. amazing upbeat combative disc
-SANHEDOLIN manjo icchiwa muko duo with Yoshida of ruins on drums that works equally well

any of the Fushitsusha discs should clue you into what they do which is mind melt.

I'm partial to the Haino+ Sitaar Tah! 2x CD and Revealed to none double CD for Hurdy Gurdy and air synth because my label released them.. but the Sitaar Tah! did get a really strong review in WIRE and i think sounds nothing like anything else in his back catalog

for more whoring i have a few Haino titles in distro at
http://www.archivecd.com/shop.htm his recent PSF solo guitar disc, recent collab with KK NUll, and collab with Yoshida on Tzadik

compulsive diarrhea, jico 01.23.2007 02:34 PM

nice. good job mr.angelo.

racehorse 01.23.2007 06:41 PM

well, after an exhausting night of online record browsing/buying/ebaying i am sad to say that i didn't actually get any haino which is dissapointing. instead i bought a bunch of derek bailey stuff i hadn't heard before, 2 flaherty/corsano/yeh lps and voices by flaherty. also a couple of sonic youth vinyls. keiji will have to wait till next month, but i will come back here for ideas so thanks!

Toilet & Bowels 01.23.2007 08:39 PM

there are a couple of fushitsusha discs i would stay away from the 1978somethinginjapanese one, and origin's hesitation, they are morer for the dedicated fan really. live 1, live 2 and pathetique are the most easily obtainable of the best fushitsusha records.

Iain 01.25.2007 08:02 AM

Neat! Thanks. A Crash Worship vid on there too which might be interesting.

compulsive diarrhea, jico 01.25.2007 09:26 PM

"la la la la la la"

hotbutterknives 02.04.2007 12:00 PM

i met him once while i was working at the FIMAV, he was doing a show with thurston, i was placing their amps n shit , he was really nice, the show was pretty interesting, it was just thruston and haino on guitar ( well haino had a drum too but hardly played at all ) anyways the show lasted like 3 hours, at firts it was packed and at the end their was like only 20 people max left, everybody was freaked out, it was hilarious! the show was good, i guess the everybody was expecting a rock show or something, i still got hes guitar pick somewhere...

hat and beard 02.04.2007 02:28 PM

anybody seen the tony conrad / haino duo on the instal festival website?
take a gander: http://www.arika.org.uk/instal/live/video.php#

an mp3 of the whole show is also available if you register (totally worth it).

porkmarras 02.04.2007 03:15 PM

Yeah i just saw the video the other nite and listened to the mp3 which is fuckin' awesome! also my friend Steve Baczkowski played Instal w/ Ravi and you can find an mp3 and clips of their set too, which he has defined as the duo's most insane and strongest live set ever, and they've played for awhile...

after watching the Conrad/Haino set... I even felt more honored that i was able to perform side-by-side with Tony Conrad last week in the Rhys Chatham Guitar Trio All Stars!!!

Phlegmscope 02.05.2007 05:53 PM

I was about to post this to the dinosaur thread, but as we happen to have this thread too...

Keiji Hainosaurus

racehorse 02.10.2007 01:27 PM

this is pretty stupid, but how do you pronounce keiji haino?
keejee hyno, kidjee hyno or kyjee hyno??

i feel like a silly brit.

Toilet & Bowels 02.11.2007 12:17 AM

kay jee
high no

scott v 02.16.2007 04:34 PM

i thought i heard thurston one time say his name pronounced as "kigh-oohchee hay no"... but that doesn't mean he is right.

btw, been a fan of Haino for a number of years i haven't really heard a bad recording, though the "Milky Way" Solo 1973 is too unlistenable to me due to mostly the sound quality, it sounds like the microphone was packed into a pile of mud and recording amp fuzz.

I think you can't go wrong with most of his solo recordings and Fushitsusha albums, the collabs are abit different, to me the best of which is with Yoshida Tatsuya (drummer of Ruins) with the newish Tzadik release "New Rap" anyways Haino rules!!! and after purchasing a 1972 black tele custom reissue for myself 3 years ago and then later realizing he plays one, is just a minor justification to keeping a $600 guitar... he is playing this years No Fun Fest, where he rumored to be playing w/ Merzbow.

SYRFox 02.16.2007 04:41 PM

I pronounce: Kay Jee Hey No
