Metallica

The other day at work, they played master of puppets in its entirety over the radio, and I was like... holy fuck, I still love this album. Say what you want about their later output but man... those first albums are still great. Anyone else with me?

Kylerobert 03.18.2007 06:46 PM

I agree

jennthebenn 03.18.2007 06:49 PM

unabashedly great up until the black album, which isn't saying that album
was bad, but eh, you know...kill 'em all, ride the lightning, master of
puppets--all classic. and the riff-freak inside me really likes the
time-signature madness of and justice for all. damn shame about the
bass, though.

atsonicpark 03.18.2007 06:53 PM

agreed.

they also played "sad but true" the other day on the radio at work and i... actually... i mean, it's overplayed, but shit, i was like "jesus, this versus any other song they play on the radio here and this wins."

thewall91 03.18.2007 06:58 PM

agreed.

the ikara cult 03.18.2007 07:04 PM

Metallica are shit

Norma J 03.18.2007 07:06 PM

I don't think it's the band I dislike so much as it is the fans.

Although James Hetfield is a hunter, therefore he is a fucking cock.

timtimtim 03.18.2007 07:08 PM

I loved them when I went through a metal phase in high school

pokkeherrie 03.18.2007 07:08 PM

first 3 albums are pretty great. haven't listened to any of them in the last couple of years though, maybe even longer.

i dislike both the fans and the band members.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 03.18.2007 07:09 PM

I think their early stuff is week. It's like listening to a tape played through an old stereo then recorded through a mic and recorded back onto another tape.

Sounds like you're describing the newest hot noise record.

pokkeherrie 03.18.2007 07:30 PM

yeah, those multi-million dollar budget studio albums like reload and st. wanker are where it's at.

...not too mention the multi-million dollar shrink hired during the recording process.

youthoftomorrow 03.18.2007 07:49 PM

i love ...And Justice for All. one of my favorite albums ever.

Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning have some pretty sweet songs (especially "Creeping Death").

i saw Metallica live a few years ago; it was fucking awesome.

HECKLER SPRAY 03.18.2007 07:53 PM

Never heard of this band...

atsonicpark 03.18.2007 08:03 PM

st. anger has awesome guitar tones on it, btw.

Toilet & Bowels 03.18.2007 08:11 PM

i like that snare sound from st. anger

atsonicpark 03.18.2007 08:16 PM

Oh, the sewage pipe?

jennthebenn 03.18.2007 08:17 PM

i thought it was a metal folding chair.

Its the most important thing in the world to me right now

Iain 03.18.2007 08:28 PM

I really love Master, Ride and And Justice but the rest I'm not so keen on. Some good stuff on Kill em All but not that much of a fan and the rest is mostly rubbish. I have a Master of Puppets wallet but I need to replace it because money keeps falling out of it.

Haha. rep'd.

the ikara cult 03.18.2007 08:35 PM

Yeah, 'tallica. I remember their set at Reading 03, the 10 minutes before they came onstage was fantastic, then after about 2 minutes of them playing i had to just go

Everyneurotic 03.18.2007 09:19 PM

yeah, i had an epiphany similar to adam's like a month ago, i was watching tv and went to the music chanels i never listen to because they are mostly reggaeton and shakira and ciara, etc. and then the metal chanel, the only good one, started playing pantera, white zombie, stuff i've never stopped listening, then master came on, the song i mean, and they played the whole way thru (there's a radio edit that cuts the whole middle part) and i was like "fuck, this is awesome!"; then, the next day, i put it on again, and disposable heroes came on and i thought it was way better than listening to master!, i undusted the damn album and played it all the way thru!!

the first four albums are amazing, justice has shit production but still, the songs are so great, it doesn't matter.

but i hardly play them anymore, before my rediscovery of master, it most have been like a year and a half before when i played kill 'em all, which is basically a california hardcore record with geeky guitars.

the black album , yeah, i don't mind the odd listening of the unforgiven or sad but true but, if i played, i'd probably skip it to of wolf and man and then pop it out.

Tanzende Schauspieler 03.19.2007 04:21 AM

ride the lightning was a great album. i actually used to be quite a fan, going through my 'metal' phase. they used to be quite big in japan.

but most of my love went for napalm death though.

sarramkrop 03.19.2007 04:36 AM

Master Of Puppets is one of my favourite albums of all time and one that i can still listen today getting great pleasure from it. I loved Metallica up until 'And Justice For All'. The reason i've never been too much into it is because on that album the guitar histrionics make the songs sound a little too 'technical' for my liking.

PAULYBEE2656 03.19.2007 07:39 AM

metallica suck balls hugely, except ride the lightning, master and half of kill em all. garage days eps are pretty good too. just a shame that lars ulrich is a member. i really dislike that tennis reject sooo much, such a tosser......

jon boy 03.19.2007 07:45 AM

i liked and justice for all and bits of master of puppets. i saw a bit of some kind of monster and it still makes me chucke now.

The Usher 03.19.2007 07:56 AM

The early stuff is totally amazing, but it's quite depressing what they have turned into...they seem to hate making music, which surely means it's time to stop, grow old, and die.

PAULYBEE2656 03.19.2007 08:01 AM

some kind of monster is great! love that dvd. i got it off a mate who is a die hard metallitica fanatic. he watched it and was gonna drive over the disc and set it on fire but instead he gave it to me "because i like shit"!!!!!

demonrail666 03.19.2007 08:08 AM

Along with Reign on Blood, Master of Puppets has become the metal album it's OK for non-metal fans to like. Whilst I sort of like both I can't say that either are records I couldn't live without.

Yeah, that DVD's so funny. I love the bit where Lars is shouting "Fuck Fuck Fuck" in James Hetfield's face!

Poor old Dave Mustaine though, he's still totally fucked up over things...

Everyneurotic 03.19.2007 11:13 AM

some kind of monster? ...oh yeah, their reality show!! yeah, funny stuff, i like the flavor of love better.

pokkeherrie 03.19.2007 11:43 AM

Alright, this thread made me do it. I just dusted off Master of Puppets and as I'm typing this Battery is blasting through the speakers . \m/ \m/

I always prefered Ride the Lightning however, so I'll have to listen to that one today as well.

Washing Machine 03.19.2007 11:43 AM

I really don't like Metallica. I hate the machoness of it all, in fact I hate the machoness that seems to run through most metal music and its performers. Still I love System of a Down and Black Sabbath, anything else tends to bore the shit out of me....although Slayer's last album kinda rocked.

i played that one so much when i got it, the tape fucking broke on me. it was one of the first cds i bought when i finally had a player.

noumenal 03.19.2007 11:54 AM

Some Kind of Monster (the film) was hilarious. What a bunch of idiots.

I like Master of Puppets OK.

On the whole, their music is boring.

That Symphony and Metallica thing they did is the definition of terrible.

The Lung 03.19.2007 12:23 PM

I used to love the first 4 albums about 5 years ago but I never listen to them anymore. I happened to see them at download festival last year where they played Master of Puppets in it's entirety plus a shit load of other old songs, it was fucking amazing. Still can't be arsed listening to them though.

Everyneurotic 03.19.2007 12:40 PM

i saw them live in '99, and they were fucking spectacular, i didn't expect them to be that good. they played fight fire with fire, that made my night.

pantera opened.
