the constantly-bumped "great releases of 2014" thread

Let's fire it up.

The only 2014 album I've heard so far is Actress' Ghettoville and it's fucking amazing.

Bytor Peltor 01.06.2014 02:19 PM

Big Up - 18 Hours Of Static is the first album I'm aware of being released next week.

vacuum noise 01.07.2014 12:39 AM

new Huge Pupils soon... :)

Severian 01.07.2014 09:08 AM

New Talib Kweli, "Gravitas", and the new Silver Mount Zion (and tra la la whatever). Both pretty goddamn awesome.

Mortte Jousimo 01.08.2014 09:29 AM

New Warpaint-album coming 14th January:

SYRFox 01.08.2014 06:56 PM

Ghettoville is fantastic. Addison Groove and The Jaydes also have great forthcoming records.

My favourite release so far is Twwth's next EP though - in my opinion, this 130BPM mix of grime and UK Funky (mostly) is the most interesting sound going on in electronic music at the moment. Looking forward to Wen's album on that tip.

guest 01.12.2014 05:18 AM

big ups re: ghettoville, tingles in me panties.

_tunic_ 01.12.2014 11:28 AM

from Constellation recors:

Silver Mt Zion - Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything:

Carla Bozulich - Boy:

These guys have been operating under the radar for a few years. Interesting to note their progression from a noise/heavy psych band to a more song orientated direction. Cool stuff....

guest 01.18.2014 08:06 AM

mad live act too, seeing them again in a couple o weeks. must give that a listen I spose

pad_023 01.18.2014 08:19 AM

One of the better contemporary Australian bands in my opinion too. Maybe we will see a UK date at some point this year now they are signed to Fire.

guest 01.19.2014 06:11 AM

indeed, which is really something considering how bizarrely fertile our scenes are right now, melbourne and brisbane in particular.

guest 01.19.2014 06:12 AM

also cannot forget perth with the legendary taco leg (RIP).

guest 01.19.2014 10:14 AM

haven't heard the full record yet but judging by the singles released thus far this record is gon be cray

untold - black light spiral

sunn o))) - la reh 012 [southern lord/ideologic organ] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw44kaxzmwM (collab with ulver is also pretty good, seems a bit lacking in depth though for a proper sunn studio record)

patten - estoile naiant [warp] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqt21LtJx6o

helm - the hollow organ [pan] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-SVqsSPhzU

thug entrancer - death after life [software] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9gosKbP4_k

christian fennesz has also just finished a new rekkid entiled 'bécs', and swans have their newie 'to be kind' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YCCeC_MyL0) coming out on mute in may which, judging by their shows earlier this year should be as monolithic as the seer.

new album from stl ('at disconnected moments') on smallville is good too, really just what you would expect from dub techno in the 21st century.

pad_023 01.28.2014 09:12 AM

Secret Boyfriend - This Is Always Where You Lived

I think this is one my favourite things Blackest Ever Black have put out

chocolate_ladyland 01.28.2014 06:13 PM

@guest That SunnO))) album cover is fucking dope

^the b-side Molly is so good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVxmW2iFhCA

what's a really good RAWK album to look forward to (minus Swans)?

_tunic_ 01.28.2014 06:31 PM

Mono will record their new album in April in the US, and it will be released towards the end of the year. Really looking forward to that one. They did release a single in December

and for RAWK? I would go for Retribution Gospel Choir

Wow, you have been killing this thread so far! I'm into Blank Realm and Untold and Sunn but a few of the others you mentioned are going to be at the top of my list for tonight's "Man Work's Gonna Eat Dick Tomorrow, Better Have Some New Music" downloading session.

The more I listen to FUCK OFF GET FREE WE POUR LIGHT ON EVERYTHING the more I like it. A/Thee Silver Mount Zion/Mountain Reveries/Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band has been close to my heart since the start, but something about this album really works. It may be the vocals and instrumentals finally reconciling. I want to hear these songs played live.

I'm not a bass-person at all, but I love the sound of Thierry's bass on this album. And I'll be seeing them two times :D It could have been three even if my mom wouldn't be having her birthday then... bummer, because it's in a tiny tiny venue

A Thousand Threads 01.29.2014 05:24 AM

Been enjoying my friend Stefan's record a lot lately.

Jung An Tagen - Vielheiten

from TinyMixTapes:
All I need is a million monikers to cover myself from the world. Such is the case with our man Stefan: Cruise Family, Nachtbote, (“defunct”) SF Broadcasts, Virtual Vienna, and Jung An Tagen. Glad he’s back to flush out my woes, making music as Jung An Tagen, and catching the ears of Feathered Coyote Records with Vielheiten. It’s straight stress shattering house influenced electronic breakdown of beat collage. Nothing of the sampled realm. All production style sounds. And ready to become one with your psyche.

Mortte Jousimo 01.30.2014 06:46 AM

I think this

is quite great. Listened it only once, but I think it will be even better with more listenings. Great red vinyls & etching also!

SYRFox 02.07.2014 05:07 PM

in case anyone's interested in electronic music, "thousand million" by twwth is probably my favourite ep this year so far. 130bpm grime at its finest

pokkeherrie 02.11.2014 05:47 PM

^ speaking of electronic music, the new Container EP "Adhesive" has got me bouncing through the house.

MellySingsDoom 02.11.2014 06:24 PM

For new releases - drum and bass with the new Diamond Life album:

For archive releases - Stefan Jaworzyn's "Drained Of Connotation":

pokkeherrie 02.11.2014 06:28 PM

^ I really like that Jaworzyn album. As usual, Blackest Ever Black delivers.

Yes indeed - and a Stefan J album of all new electronic music is about to drop very soon this year!

The new Sun Araw Lp Belomancie, he is still one of my favourite artists in contemporary music.
Always making new and interesting music with the guitar. This record is less drone than his previous works, there's
loads of angular guitar, flutes, horns and alien sounds.

Anything Steve Gunn puts out at the moment is fucking rad, probably my favourite album from this year. Demented psychedelic folk...

did not realise they were putting out a new record, will have to track it down.

russell haswell - 37 minute workout [diagonal]

wen - signals [keysound]

pan sonic - oksastus [kvitnu]

ekoplekz - unfidelity [planet mu]

chocolate_ladyland 03.19.2014 01:02 AM

Benji and the Secret Boyfriend album are a close 1 2 so far. Actress ain't far behind either.

Severian 03.19.2014 07:34 AM

So far, these have been the albums that have made my jaw drop the most:

Untold - Black Light Spiral

Death Vessels - Ilsand Intervals
https://subpop-img.s3.amazonaws.com/...jpg?1389008422

Morgan Delt - S/t

... And yes, Ghettoville, and the new ASMZ, and Perfect Pussy's Say Yes to Love, which for some reason is not getting a lot of play around here. I'm not sure why. I know they're kind of an it-band, and I guess Pitchfork is going down on them (eh?) but fuck it, it's an album that somehow manages to kick enough ass to make all their media darling nonsense seem inconsequential.
