Official SY Gossip Top 20 Greatest Albums of 2000's!

Well, I think this could be interesting, so here it is: The official SY Gossip Twenty Greatest Albums of 2000's, based on demonrail idea :)

-> PM me your top ten albums (well, you can also send me only five albums or so but you can go up to ten :D)

-> only albums released since January 1st, 2000 included! No reissues, deluxes editions or whatever. No singles either, only albums...

-> Points will be: 10 for #1, 9 for #2, 8 for #3, etc.

Here we go!

5 voters so far... the overall list is already pretty wide

batreleaser 08.05.2008 09:22 AM

that was tough, even harder than the all time top 10, because those records are so firmly implanted in my concsiousness, but with top 10 of the decade, its like, oh love this, well, maybe not as much as this, but damn, this shit is awesome, does it fit?, etc...

Yeah it's definitely hard. There's so much great things that have come out since 2000...

demonrail666 08.05.2008 10:53 AM

Christ, I'm just about getting up to speed with the 90s. Am I allowed to include best of compilations? I think the Shania Twain Greatest Hits CD came out in 2002!

pbradley 08.05.2008 11:00 AM

Ugh, I'm not ready for another one.

StevOK 08.05.2008 11:11 AM

I seriously doubt that any of my picks will make it, except Sonic Nurse.

I'm posting mine here again.

The decade is not over yet. Just a little reminder, kids.

I know... but it's "Top 20 greatest albums of 2000's SO FAR". I think it should be pretty representative of the Sonic Youth Gossip members...

The Earl Of Slander 08.05.2008 02:45 PM

Well that was crushingly tough and I'm sure regrettable. Oh Vision Creation Newsun! Why oh why couldn't you have been released just 22 days later?

SYRFox 08.05.2008 06:11 PM

So far, there's been around 15 votes. The top is slowly taking place :)

The Earl Of Slander 08.05.2008 06:23 PM

I suspect this is really a battles for numbers 3-20, once Kid A and Sonic Nurse are out of the way, in all likely hood. I think this one'll be a lot more open than the last generally though.

Death & the Maiden 08.06.2008 02:22 AM

Done. Though this one was more difficult than the all time one, since I have hardly any music from the 2000s.

atsonicpark 08.06.2008 02:50 AM

vision creation newsun was my # 1 on the other top things list.

I haven't sent in anything for this. No offense, I just don't see the point for reasons that a few other posters have noted.

SYRFox 08.06.2008 04:06 AM

Yeah, I can understand that.

Hmm, I made this thread because I think that this top 20 should be more surprising and more representative of the board than the general top 20 was. I don't mean that it was disapointing, but it was only made of classics - which is perfectly normal. As no album is really considered as "classic" in the 2000's - we only have our personnal classics -, I think this top should really represent our tastes - even if yeah, it's missing the one year and a half that's going to happen; another one will probably be done by somebody when 2010 will come anyway...
I don't know if I've explained myself clearly or what, but well

--> and the top for the moment is actually pretty unpredictible, though there's still a lot of albums at 10 points

Danny Himself 08.06.2008 08:27 AM

1. Alice, Tom Waits
2. Be Your Own Pet, Be Your Own Pet
3. Lifted, Bright Eyes
4. You Are Free, Cat Power
5. Where The Humans Eat, Willy Mason
6. Sonic Nurse, Sonic Youth
7. Orphans, Tom Waits
8. Guero, Beck
9. Is This It?, The Strokes
10. Post-War, M. Ward

It's sort of out of a real order but I know Alice is my favourite of the decade so far.

SYRFox 08.06.2008 01:36 PM

Bump

Thanks to all that have sent lists so far! =)

demonrail666 08.06.2008 01:48 PM

I'm not really sure if there's gonna be an obvious winner like DDN. I'm really struggling to think of an album released so far this decade that has pretty much unified the board. I'm sure there is one, but can't think what. Certainly nothing by SY.

HaydenAsche 08.06.2008 01:56 PM

Xiu Xiu - Knife Play
Yellow Swans - Bring the Neon War Home
Panda Bear - Self-titled self-release cassette
Beck - Sea Change
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Sonic Youth - Murray Street
Cat Power - You Are Free
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
Xiu Xiu - A Promise
Bright Eyes - LIFTED or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground

atsonicpark 08.06.2008 02:00 PM

Sigh. I guess I'll do this though I think my contribution will be pointless.

Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons
Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice
Bride of No No - B.O.N.N. Appetit!
Rhys Chatham - A Crimson Grail
Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet
Stereolab - Chemical Chords
Omoide Hatoba - Osaka Ra
McLusky - Do Dallas
Rich Woodson's Ellipsis - Control and Resistance

I was trying to think of a place to put sung tongs but it barely got inched out. That album's amazing though.

HaydenAsche 08.06.2008 02:03 PM

I know. Feels and Strawberry Jam are weak sauce compared to Danse Manatee and Sung Tongs.

The Earl Of Slander 08.06.2008 02:15 PM

When are the results going to be announced?

My list was kind of weird because I've hardly listened to any post-2000 music in over a year, especially in the last 6 months or so, during which I've been primarily focused on free-jazz, and now drone/experimental type stuff. This means I have some 2000s droney music at the moment, but having only really been hardcore into it for a short while I’m not yet comfortable placing it in my favourites. So apart from a couple my list is largely a set of albums that I used to like but wouldn’t really listen too at the moment. It doesn’t help that the only 3 Sonic Youth studio albums I don’t have are NYC Ghosts & Flowers, Sonic Nurse and Murray Street (which I know I should get). I did put Destroyed Room on there though (does that count?), but that’s mainly because I have a special relationship to it due to it being only the third or so thing I got by them, and basically my introduction to the world of noisey improv stuff.

SYRFox 08.06.2008 02:24 PM

Thanks to the both of you, Hayden and atsonic. I bet that your lists are doing #1, #2, etc? (so Xiu Xiu is #1 for Hayden and Secret Chiefs 3 #1 for atsonic)

Sure, sounds good, I guess they're in the right order. Though my mind changes every week.
