songs that remind you of other songs

fugazi - sieve fisted find has this bass part (in the "please let me get my hands on it" part) that reminds me of kool thing
toadies - tyler / pixies - where is my mind
interpol - say hello the angels / the smiths - this charming man
every other interpol song / joy divison - shadow play

I know I'm forgetting some, but I ALWAYS hear songs that sound like, or at least remind me of, other songs in some part... hmm.

Wow, they are very similar.
Also counting backwards by Throwing Muses has a very similar lead guitar part to Where is my mind, and also a song called "Oh yeah" by a shitty australian band called End of Fashion, shares the same rhythm guitar part, with one minor difference. Seriously, it's strummed the same way

atsonicpark 05.18.2007 05:19 AM

nice. that's hilarious.

lots of pixies ripping off.

one i forgot to mention is "medium is the message" by mclusky.. haven't listened to it in a while but i remember the bass line being identical to a pixies song..

and more obvious:
offspring - self esteem chorus riff / nirvana - smells like teen spirit
elastica - connection / wire - ex lion tamer

Torn Curtain 05.18.2007 05:29 AM

Two huge rip-offs by French bands:

Kaolin - Partons vite / Bob Dylan - I want you
Cookie Dingler - Femme libérée / Iggy Pop - The passenger

There's a short bit on Charles Mingus' Black Saint ... LP that I always think sounds like the theme tune from Neighbours. I'm not trying to be clever here, I just really think that it does.

Everyneurotic 05.18.2007 09:12 AM

smells like teen spirit / boston's more than a feeling (chorus riff)

pavement's silent kit / lynyrd skynyrd's tuesday's gone (the "hand me the drumstick..." bit)...also the main part reminds me of a television song, although i'm not sure which.

pavement's stop breathing (last part) / sonic youth's she's in a bad mood (last part)

HECKLER SPRAY 05.18.2007 09:28 AM

Queen of the Stone Age : First it giveth bass line / Sonic Youth : Mildred Pierce bass line
Exactly the same.

i see your mildred pierce and raise you a tsol - sounds of laughter, listen to the bass riff in there, not to mention it was done way before any of those.

Torn Curtain 05.19.2007 05:10 AM

Just noticed that:

Black Flag - Black coffe / Metallica - Disposable heroes ("back to the front" part)

king_buzzo 05.19.2007 05:14 AM

Nirvana-Come As You Are sounds a lot like Killing Joke-Eighties, the riff, I mean...

pbradley 05.19.2007 05:27 AM

not really a song but the majority of The Swirliees' Blonder Tongue Audio Baton reminds me of My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything

Torn Curtain 05.19.2007 05:33 AM

Muse - Falling down (the guitar) / Jeff Buckley - Satisfied mind

sarramkrop 05.19.2007 06:10 AM

If you listen to Les Razilles Denudes' B1 (Studio 1970) and Dinosaur Jr's Not The Same , you'll immediately notice that both songs use the same chords and vocal lines.

Thats probably the most well known one.
Also teen spirit has a similar rhythm guitar part to debaser by the pixies.

I think you're thinking of Wire's Three Girl Rhumba.

Elastica's Connection also "borrows" from The Cars' Let's Go.

Pookie 05.19.2007 07:49 AM

Another well known one:

New Seekers - I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing/Oasis - Shakermaker

sarramkrop 05.19.2007 07:52 AM

Coldplay vs Kraftwerk's Computer Love

pbradley 05.19.2007 07:58 AM

Yeah, I remember something on television about how chris martin asked Hütter for permission to use the riff.

If the two songs are in F and there's a similar rhythmic figure however it's not the same chord progression, harmonies and melodies so I actually don't find a resemblance.

atsonicpark 05.19.2007 08:41 AM

atsonicpark 05.19.2007 08:42 AM

Every time i play the rhythm part of debaser on the guitar I play teen spirit by accident.

Trasher02 05.19.2007 09:07 AM

Pagoda / Nirvana

king_buzzo 05.19.2007 09:09 AM

Ziggy Stardust-Where'd You Go(J & The Fog)

Only the riff though.

SonicSam 05.19.2007 11:06 AM

Bit of an obscure one, but the song cut the shit by J Church, is EXACTLY the same as lewis (mistreated) by radiohead. It's not even funny!

Stijn 05.19.2007 11:21 AM

Beatles - Sexy Sadie/ Karma Police
