Thought Forms
May this be a thread to post and discuss content related to Thought Forms (Charlie Romijn, Guy Metcalfe and Deej Dhariwal) and other projects with not many degrees of separation (Silver Stairs of Ketchikan, Solar Flares, Deej Dhariwal's solo work, Lava Thief, Invada Records, etc...). There's a new video out for "Landing" (off their latest album, "Ghost Mountain"), created in a week by Charlie with free editing software and iphone: http://vimeo.com/77878081 |
Damn it, more bands from SYG that I don't listen too. It seems as my music collection keeps growing that I've finally reached a maximum threshold for absorption. I can't really get that into new records or bands anymore, my brain simply doesn't have enough room to remember any more new lyrics or music. It seemed before that there was infinite storage, but over the past 4 or 5 years I've let so many new records and bands go off my radar that it is almost embarrassing, and yet, oddly, I don't have the slightest regret.

Thought Forms are one of the better bands in the UK, for my money. I've seen them quite a few times, from way back when they were support acts on crappy Wednesday door split shows (5 years maybe?) Have also played with them a few times - super-generous and caring people and insanely 'into' music in a way most jaded musos aren't. Live, they get better every time.
SSOK is amazing, and YOU NEED TO DO MORE OF IT CHARLIE (if you're reading). |
An audience recording of a very recent Thought Forms show has been uploaded to dimeadozen:

New Thought Forms/Esben And The Witch split 12" coming up in April:
"We're very happy to be releasing a split with a band we really love, Esben and the Witch. Invada Records will be releasing the split album on April 7th on 12" vinyl and digital formats. The entire record comes in at 32 minutes long and features 4 new Thought Forms tracks; 1) Your Bones 2) Sound Of Violence 3) For The Moving Stars 4) Silver Kiss Here's what Invada say : Invada Records is pleased to announce the release of a split EP between Brighton post-punk post-rockers Esben and the Witch and elemental Bristol fuzz-peddlers Thought Forms, due for release on April 7th. The split comes off the back of critically lauded long-players from both acts last year, with Esben releasing 'Wash the Sins Not Only The Face' and Thought Forms second album, 'Ghost Mountain'. The release recalls the classic era of split singles in the US underground – think of those heady early Sub Pop days, where you’d get Mudhoney and Sonic Youth covering one another on either side of a 7”. In other words: record collector heaven. Both bands will be touring together in the UK, Europe, and the U.S around the time of release to promote this split". |
"The Cessation Elegy" by Bill Horist & Jakob Riis, is available to pre-order now from Lava Thief's Bandcamp (limited edition of 100 copies with handmade packaging):

Lots of stuff going on at the Thought Forms camp: new song, "The Sound of Violence", is now available for streaming, there's tour dates announced for the UK (as support for 65daysofstatic), there's a new split with Esben and the Witch coming up sometime soon as well as an essential new release by Charlie's label, Lava Thief; and a discount of 20% on any purchase (whether digital or physical) from their Bandcamp page. Details about all this are on their latest newsletter:

In case anyone hasn't seen Thought Forms' Nine Volt Sessions, that's another remarkable video documentation as well: http://youtu.be/SJuCvFgAgic It seems it hasn't been posted here in this thread yet, but Stu taped them opening for Chelsea Light Moving last year, and the audio can be downloaded from his blog in .MP3 and .FLAC: http://tapewormstu.blogspot.mx/2013/...013-06-17.html |
Excellent - cheers for putting in about the Joan as well, hope that comes out well. Did you see my FB message about Brighton?

"alternate logo" is a bit of an exaggeration, it was just an idea I wanted to put down...I still quite like it, though!

hey, I missed that last post, just saw on last.fm that they're supporting 65daysofstatic. So I'll probably go see them in Utrecht.
Don't know either band, 65daysofstatic are a bit like Mogwai right? Should be a nice match then :-) Can't promise I'll record it though, my mics are broken, new ones are ordered but not sure when they'll arrive |
one of them is wearing a SY shirt in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJuCvFgAgic
which sounds a hell better than that vid from the Portishead tour. ticket bought :D |
It is a rare day when Deej ain't wearing that Sonic Youth t-shirt, I think. :)
Sonic Youth is part of the band's lineage. Charlie's review of "Smart Bar - Chicago 1985": http://lavathief.blogspot.mx/2013/01/04012013.html Also, here's a pic of Charlie rocking on a Sonic tee: _tunic_, by all means, please do tape them. I think you could make a precious enough recording only with the Sony PCM M-10, without external mics. I would appreciate to hear it. I thank you so much in advance for any document. There aren't enough recordings of them out there and possibly a few more people besides myself would love to have more. The Thought Forms/Esben and The Witch split is almost here, and reviews have started to appear: http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/revi...plit-lp-149659 http://drownedinsound.com/releases/1...eviews/4147601 http://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albu...forms-split-lp According to Invada, there are still some copies left of the Silver edition (limited to 500 units), and Thought Forms mentioned at their facebook that digital copies of the split are likely to start circulating from April 7th onwards (perhaps via Bandcamp?). |
yeah, I'll give those internal mics a try.
Damn, they have some great stuff on their bandcamp. E.g. the second song of http://thoughtforms.bandcamp.com/album/sorry-i-forgot I tend to find drone becoming quite boring after listening to the same song for a few minutes, but this is very good |

thanks guys for raving about them! They were well worth seeing, even though they only played a 30 minutes set, and the other band played way too long for my liking. And in between sets I had to listen to the most annoying conversation ever by the couple behind me. Her mom is going to remarry in July for the third time, and the new guy is a dickhead. And her dad told her by mail that he never wants to see her again.... JEZUS CHRIST I DON'T WANNA KNOW BITCH
So now you know too :D It went on for 20 minutes like that Anyway, bought their 2 CDs and a T-shirt, and listened to the latest on the drive back home. It's absolutely great. Also had a quick chat with them, this was the last night of the tour with 65daysofstatic, they will go to Brussels next to play on a Terry Riley piece. I did record it, came out OK-ish, I did have to lower the levels twice during the first song. Those internal mics are much more sensitive, I think I recorded 65daysofstatic with the levels set to 0.5 |
Awesome-O. Thank you so much. I'm looking very much forward to the recording. And I need some of those Thought Forms t-shirts...
I'm really excited about that Primordial Undermind/Thought Forms record. I thought it was a split album, but it seems it's actually a recording of a collaboration by both bands. :) |

might be a bit costly to print it in multicolor though :) |
Lava Thief will be releasing VENA CAVA's debut album in November. Video for "Throne Brain Believers", directed by cLOUDBOY is on Youtube:

Nice track! Who are they? I assume the two from Thought Form with another female drummer?

thanks Stu! I'll be sharing a recording of them myself soon too, when they supported 65daysofstatic a couple months ago. A stunning set it was, not a very good recording though. But it's better than nothing :)
