Only 3 bands exist

Pretend there are only 3 bands you can listen to. You're welcome to their entire catalogue, but you can't have their members' side projects or anything like that. Which 3 would you choose and why?

1. Skinny Puppy. I need this band to defrag my brain, and I can't get inspired the same way from anything else. There are alternatives such as severed heads and foetus, but they aren't consistant the same way. I take skinny puppy over any other electronic music.

2. Sonic Youth. This band consistantly releases amazing albums that keep me occupied for months. I don't think I'll ever get tired of them, and I don't think I'll ever stop noticing new reasons to love them.

3. Smashing Pumpkins. These guys have all the mood music I need for almost every conceivable mood (the others are taken care of by the aforementioned bands), I need some smashing pumpkins sometimes.

EDIT: Solo artists are ok. I just meant you can't have sonic youth AND psychic hearts AND free kitten etc. You can't have Syd Barrett AND pink floyd, but you can have Syd Barrett.

Rob Instigator 02.20.2007 10:10 PM

interesting question. This is going to be a thought provoker.

Sonic Youth
The Beatles

I cannot think of another band equal to these in my ears, as far as recorded output is concerned....

I agreed with this one at first, but then decided to replace Nick Cave with Cowboy Junkies.

Mind you, a part of me is tempted to replace Neubauten with Girls Aloud too, just so that there's something cheerful to listen to from time to time.

Yeah, final choice:

Sonic Youth
Cowboy Junkies
Girls Aloud

sun city girl 02.21.2007 04:41 AM

do they have to be bands? otherwise i say syd barrett. actually i wouldn't really need anything else. but if just bands then i'll drop even SY and pick:

the fall
new order
caroliner

foxforce5 02.21.2007 05:41 AM

I rather not listen to anything then have my selection limited to 3 bands (so frustrating). Like when all my cds were stolen - I just sang the songs I remembered rather than try to restart my collection with a initial few cds.

_slavo_ 02.21.2007 05:48 AM

Easy pick.

Sonic Youth
Mogwai
My Bloody Valentine

cryptowonderdruginvogue 02.21.2007 05:49 AM

-bob dylan
-pink floyd
-sonic youth or daft punk

foxforce5 02.21.2007 06:00 AM

When the world ends it looks like there will be a glut of Sonic Youth cds in all your bomb shelters. It will be like the mid nineties when every pawn shop had 7 copies of Ace of Base - The Sign, on hand.

Haha try trading A Thousand Leaves (vinyl!) for ammo and gasoline to your surviving neighbors. Should have stocked up on country instead.

Ah'll be okay, ah got mah Cowboy Junkies. Yee-ha!

musicfallinglikesnow 02.21.2007 06:24 AM

The Velvet Underground - I'm traditional, what the heck. I love the band.
Sonic Youth
Yoko Ono and Plastic Ono Band - Since it has to be a "band" I added the Plastic bit. I'm not sure about this one, though.

screamingskull 02.21.2007 06:32 AM

Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith and either The Beatles or Joni Mitchell.

AMM - the reason is that they have such a wealth of amazing recordings/collaberations, one could not get tired of it.
Sonic Youth - my favourite band, course...
Derek Bailey - everything he does i cannot get bored of.

Tokolosh 02.21.2007 07:35 AM

Velvet Underground, Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth.

jimbrim 02.21.2007 07:58 AM

Sonic Youth, Animal Collective, The Fall

davenotdead 02.21.2007 08:21 AM

Animal Collective

....this question sucks....

are we allowed to consider future releases by the bands we pick? live stuff and rarities, etc?....

foxforce5 02.21.2007 08:22 AM

Of course it sucks it's hypothetical.

fishmonkey 02.21.2007 09:54 AM

thats a tough one...

Sonic Youth anyways
Nine Inch Nails would also have to be there...

maybe Radiohead or Pavement?
i dunno about the last one, god its all so final - can i not just have an ipod with all me favorite bands on it?

Of course you are allowed future releases. Any official "Artist you choose" release. Hell, any unofficial release too. And solo artists are ok, you just can't have other bands they were in as well.

demonrail666 02.21.2007 11:59 AM

Sonic Youth
Can
The Fall

and what's wrong with animal collective? they're easily one of the most innovative bands in the past 5 years.

Georgekrz 02.21.2007 01:38 PM

three bands I take with me into the bunker when the end of the world comes:

Sonic Youth (of course)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Dresden Dolls

nothing is wrong with them. i enjoy what they do thorughroughly, but out of the whole spectrum of bands that exist or have existed, to pick them as one of "only" three is just silly to me.

DemonBox 02.21.2007 03:01 PM

Sonic Youth
Motorpsycho
Tom Waits
