hip hop/trip hop?
so yeah i've always been pure white when it comes to my music taste. but blue flowers by dr.octagon has changed my mind and i have been branching out a lot recently. so can anyone give me some recs? i don't think i need to mention if it's about some guy and his ego i don't wanna know. thanks guys.
i guess maybe stuff of the more atmospheric and dark end of things like blue flowers is what i'm after |
for the record, hip hop is completely different from trip-hop.
if your tastes have always been "pure white", you might just want to stick with shit on the anticon label. personally, i like: dabrye ghostface talib kweli madlib four tet public enemy prefuse 73 nas cam'ron j dilla the roots N.W.A clipse of those, only prefuse and dabrye are dark and atmospheric at times. also, dalek is pretty dark, but i saw him/them live and the experience completely turned me off to the music. i also love local rap, but that's probably because it's what i grew up on. |
check out MF Doom as well, hes amazing
|
I'm pretty picky when it comes to hip hop.
But yeah Dr. Octagon/Dr Doom/Kool Keith is good shit. You should also check out Buck 65. That guy kicks some ass. |
I'm mixing the two but they are two separate things:
Company Flow Sugarhill Gang Dalek Sensational El-P Mr Lif Tricky Leila Archive Oh fuck it!I could go on for a bit but that's all i could think of at the moment while i'm at work. |

Good call,they're awesome! |
Mr. Lif!
(edit) aaah porky has already mentioned him, so there's no need for capital letters, but what the heck. Notorious B.I.G. had a flow that always made me hypnotized. Such "get-that-donut-out-of-my-mouth" kind of voice. |

if listening to people boast is too difficult for you you'll have a hard time listening to hiphop as MCs coming up with witty boasts and disses is as commonplace as hearing people sing about love is in rock music. and all that boasting is meant to be taken humourously, a lot of people have trouble grasping this fact. gang starr mobb deep - the infamous ditc brand nubian black star wu tang snoop a tribe called quest kool g rap nas - illmatic dark mind divine styler quannum (blackalicious & latryx) organized konfusion apani b fly emcee dj spinna quasimoto mf grimm mf doom ultramagnetic MCs |
Mos Def (definitely groovy and tasteful)
Most of the old Wu-Tang Clan (GZA and Ghostface esp. also Ol Dirty is funny as hell) Prefuse 73 (not really hip hop, but yea) Buck 65 (talented and creative Canadian dj/mc) Blumentopf (if you're into checking out kraut-hop) Absolute Beginner (kraut hop) |
Saul Williams

on the trip hop side of things:
mezzanine - massive attack dummy - portishead supermodified - amon tobin endtroducing - dj shadow optometry - dj spooky pre-millenium tension - tricky That should be an adequate introduction... I can't really recall any right now... When I do i'll add it in... |
protishead - dummy
deltron 3030 - deltron 3030 nas - illmatic, or the new one (hip hop is dead) wu tang - 36 chambers a tribe called quest - the low end theory and I saved the best for last: OutKast - ATLiens or Aquemini most of mine were mentioned already, but I figured I should narrow it down to some albums so you get the best of the best. |

that's what i wanted to say, but i couldn't find a good way to articulate it. also, i'd like to add outkast and a tribe called quest (especially the "midnight marauders" album" to my list). |
So i supopose that even calling for the killing of gays is humorous then?Hmm....

Agreed. If you're into Dr. Octagon this is a good album to get. Dan the Automator produced both albums so they have a similar feel. |

was it elephant man or beenie man who said that? either way, those dudes suck and dancehall is garbage. and yes it is humorous, as long as eminem says it. |
