Whats it like?

Are the Swans any good?

zedius 07.19.2007 02:55 AM

Today I got 4 things in the mail:

Severed Heads: Gigaplus CD, Robot Peepshow DVD

Malfunkshun: T-shirt, 333 DVD.

The malfunkshun DVD is especially fantastic.

I need to pick up some Swans. Can anyone suggest a good place to start?

Rob Instigator 07.19.2007 09:21 AM

I would not know abut swans. everything I get from them is pompous and boring. I mean BORING.

Everyneurotic 07.19.2007 09:48 AM

swans, and i mean the early stuff, up until children of god (because i haven't heard the early stuff), were fantastic, very grim, very brutal; i haven't given the discs a proper listen but, so far, cop sounds awesome.

i bought ddn deluxe yesterday, sounds tons better than the dgc crap remaster.

COP/YOUNG GOD/GREED/HOLY MONEY
CHILDREN OF GOD/WORLD OF SKIN
VARIOUS FAILURES

From top to bottom, they start of harsh and become more melodic.

Head over to the Swans website, where you'll find some samples on the discography.

Where do you guys buy most of your music? Various internet sites? Local store? Where?

Just curious.

Rob Instigator 07.19.2007 06:05 PM

I go to local stores, sound exchaneg and vinal edge, here in Houston, as well as others like Black Dog Records.

I also hit Ebay for records.

Local, independently owned stores. Lucky to have two of them thriving here. I like the touchy-feely aspect of buying records. I don't like buying over the Interweb.

Youngsbower - Relayer

The most notable album that I have bought recently. Really beautiful, and I wasn't even much of a Richard Youngs fan before.

Iain 07.20.2007 04:18 AM

I really need to get that Youngsbower one. The few fragments of it I have heard are ace. It's also worth checking out another collaboration they did, Site/Realm which is much noisier but really good. Worth it for the first side alone I think. Might be a bit tough to find these days.

Everyneurotic 07.20.2007 09:39 AM

on cd:

*royal trux - thank you
*steel pole bath tub - scars from falling down
*rah bras - whohm
*bloody panda ep
*lasse marhaug - the great silence

total-trash 07.20.2007 09:41 AM

on vinyl.
you're living all over me - dinosaur jr

my favorite part about it is that the vinyl is yellow

gmku 07.20.2007 10:07 AM

AW! Dammit, mine isn't! Where'd you get that.

total-trash 07.20.2007 10:09 AM

this record store near my house. crooked beat. the yellow really makes it for me.

hey gmku, don't know if you remember me, i used to be touch me i'm sick round here.

gmku 07.20.2007 10:20 AM

Ah, I think I remember...

Yeah, I'm a sucker for colored vinyl. Probably the favorite one I own is a bubblegum-pink-swirl SubPop 45 of early Smashing Pumpkins (has a couple Gish songs).

total-trash 07.20.2007 10:24 AM

ahh that sounds nice.

i got around to buying a record player and i've started up a collection of vinyl. it's pretty pathetic so far, but i never realized how expensive newer vinyl can be.

gmku 07.20.2007 10:30 AM

Yeah, it can be. But I'd rather spend the same amount of money on just a few nice LPs than a bunch of chintzy CDs. I just get more of a thrill out of LPs.
