Man, you lost a shitload of weight! Looking good! You've been eating healthy?

Rob Instigator 02.28.2019 10:46 AM

The past 2 years. Been eating healthier (cut out lots of processed starches, processed sugar, sodas) exercise, clean living, and lots of good sticky icky.... hahahhahahhahahha

(went from 308lbs to 260 currently. according to the bullshit body mass indexes, I am supposed to weigh 175lbs. I am 6'2". If I weighed 175lbs I would eb emaciated. In fact, I have not weighed 175 since 8th grade!)

evollove 02.28.2019 10:47 AM

What do you do when you get the munchies? Suffer through them, indulge, or do you have a healthy snack for when you're stoned?

This is a good question. I am, and always will be, a GOLOSO. In Spanish, that means a kid/person who loves food, will eat anything, and can be counted to finish anyone else's plate.

I used to keep a lot of fruit, but my doctor said since I was in pre-diabetes treatment (before I lost the weight) that fruit is just as bad as a candy bar, or fruit juice or a soda, in terms of the shock to the insulin system. (the fiber in fruits is good, but does not stop the insulin spikes)

I am a salty/savory snack guy. I keep low-salt sunflowers seeds in shell to snack on.

Frankly, I just drink water and fight through the munchies. Not all sticky gives the munch, but it is tough when it happens.

I like all kinds of nuts, with low salt or low oil.

Rob Instigator 02.28.2019 11:14 AM

protein fights the munchies well. candy does NOT

!@#$%! 02.28.2019 11:26 AM

keto ftw ;)

(im not on keto— only when necessary)

and yeah a banana is like a cookie

but keto ftw :p

evollove 02.28.2019 11:26 AM

Ah. Makes sense.

I'll try to incorporate more protein into my munchy time. Tired of overeating.

actually insulin is not just for sugar. insulin rises for protein as well.

e.g. whey will spike your insulin too

but FAT IS YOUR FRIEND

good fats rule

cut the flours and add some good oils that stick to your ribs

plus low fat food *tastes like shit*

evollove 02.28.2019 11:42 AM

So what's a good "good fat" snack?

Just a bunch of bananas?

Rob Instigator 02.28.2019 11:44 AM

insulin rises with food consumption. that is normal. however, consumption of high sugar or high starch items will make a spike that is detrimental. enough of these and your body starts making too much insulin, which is just as bad as not enough.....or sometimes, the body is so "shocked" by the sugar intake that the insulin creators in the body get burned out and then you gotta start injecting yourself every day.

Rob Instigator 02.28.2019 11:47 AM

no bananas! that is straight sugar.

avocados,
cheese,
whole eggs
dark chocolate (buy a bag of semi-sweet dark choco chips, keep them in a covered bowl, and grab several to get you that sweet cocoa kick without the massive fat and sugar load)
fatty fishes (sardines, salmon, mackerel)
Nuts of all types

olive oil
coconut/coconut oil
full fat yogurts

in my pantry:
walnuts
almonds
pecans
peanut butter (just peanut no sugar read label)
irish butter (butyrate +k2 ftw)
olive oil
toasted sesame oil (so tasty)

almond is great cuz high protein
walnut has the “best” fats (but they go rancid faster)

im not currently on keto, and i eat carbs but they’re mostly “slow” ones like FREE HOLES as john wayne said in the searchers lmao (that’s beans for you midwesterners)

but i don’t eat a ton of beans, i eat a small amount then i douse with olive oil.

then i add small meat and vegetables (eg spinach).

people say “rice and beans,” but son, that is too much carbo, and it makes me sleepy then hungry again.

if you are not vegan maybe eggs or cheese work well with fee holes. plus the eggs have beautiful fats and lecithin for your BRAINZ

there is also a way to eat peanut butter that is not sweet. fuck pb&j & wyte bredd. boring!

try instead some thai inspired pb business with things like chili and and soy/fish sauce and kimchi and that sort of thing hahaha.

( i invent snacks all the time. diy or die.)

but yeah if you’re hungry all the time you’re likely on a sugar rollercoaster. NUKEITT

GravitySlips 02.28.2019 12:29 PM

I eat bananas every day and I'm (to be completely not modest) in fuckin' great shape. Albeit I'm a soccer player/gym goer and an (almost) vegan.

What works for me:
- Healthy fats as above
- LOTS of fibre (keeps you full, helps avoid overeating)
- Tonnes of vegetables
- Anything between 3-5 servings of fruit per day
- Eggs
- No dairy. Hardly any red meat.
- No processed foods or soft-drinks (maybe the most important)

Cutting dairy out was what got me to the "next level" in terms of my physique. Might not work for everyone, and giving up cheese is of course definitely not for everyone... :)

when i can only find defatted “greek” yogurt i buy anyway but season it with good fats

-olive oil/herbs towards a mediterranean flavor profile (great with tomacco)

-macadamia oil for utter deliciousness (but $$)

-mix with pb for a bodybuilder type meal

-throw in some berries and a bunch of chopped nuts in for breakfastsy thing

I simply don't like eggs. I might have to get over that. Seems like a super food.

Why is good yogurt so fucking expensive?

Simply put the reason is because it is imported from the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salmans' own personal sperm bank. Thus why every country is selling weapons to the Saudis - we just can't get of enough of that sweet yo'girt.

yogurt price: oprah + suckers (or something)

well no, depends where you buy

costco's "greek" yogurt is pretty great price and the #2 container is recyclable everywhere. (or is it #1.. i forget. same difference)

if you have an instapot you could make your own but it's a pain in the ass not worth your time unless you po' (you ain't).

actually, simple yogurt is very fucking easy. the straining of "greek" is the messy part. but uff... you still have to scald the milk... tldr...

eggs are GREAT! i buy mine from a local farm. holy shit such beautiful yellow yolks and rich thick whites. such glory

if you have no taste for them, start by buying good ones and see. go to your local hippy or farmer's market.

then learn to cook them.

it's a great project to learn how to cook eggs. like, ONE THING, know what i mean? i like them fried spanish style with crispy whites around. i like them scrambled, with heavy cream in them. i like them as a frittata, with sweet potato and spinach. i like them in a spanish tortilla (jugosa para mí). i like an egg salad (im not peewee hermann). i like a soft boil.

look, there are 2 things that are dreadful in the egg universe:

1) raw whites. like when you ask for sunny side up and they come runny like a booger.

2) overboiled yolks. that's the hardboiled that comes with a gray crust around it. that's too far gone.

start with something simple like a good scramble. but do it with good eggs. egg is one thing where i don't mind stepping out of walmart and paying hippy prices. the quality improvement is well worth the few dollars.

here try this version. it's unusual for american style scrambled eggs but very low-risk and good

20-30% of the population reacts poorly to dairy. one must know one's guts.

cheese, aged hard cheese specifically, is hyper nutritious, if your body can handle the proteins.

as far as bananas, they are great food, but not for someone trying to lose weight or to stave off diabetes. (or as Mac in Always Sunny says, "Stage 2 adult-onset die-a-bettis?")

This is the first time in my entire life that I caught myself in the mirror and actually liked what I saw. I felt cute and I saw something that might actually... look cute? I didn't know that was a thing that could happen. I can actually look into a mirror now. I don't mind people seeing me now. I felt like an actual person for the first time in my life. I cried good feelings. Then I cried a lot more because I realized exactly how bad my body dysphoria has been all my life. Up until this moment I was not able to look at mirrors or see my body when I looked down because all I saw was head to toe the ugliest most disgusting thing I ever saw. Every inch of my body, arms, shoulders, hands, especially the you know where. I couldn't stand being seen by other people. I realized the real reason I have been abstinent for 14 years wasn't because I was afraid of a relatioinship, but because I didn't want anyone to see my body.

Now being able to accept myself fully actually looks like it's on the horizon. I have my first consultation with my reassignment doctor on the 14th. I found out insurance might be able to cover the pre-surgical procedure which up until now I was told would be out of pocket and thousands of dollars, which is seemingly impossible. Insurance might even be able to pay for vocal chord surgery, one of my biggest points of dysphoria.

I might actually be able to feel like a real human being. I might actually be able to feel like I am living, and not stuck in a surreal nightmare. It sounds pretty good.

Godspeed, d.sound. This does sound like an enormous emotional breakthrough, as well as a physical one of course. Wish you all the best with the path that lies ahead of you. And kudos for being so open and blunt. It takes a great amount of courage to allow yourself to show vulnerability in the public discourse. Thanks for sharing.

_tunic_ 06.02.2019 08:29 AM

I couldn't agree more to what the two above me said. I'm in the process of writing you a long long reply, with my story. I've been in a transition phase myself, but work related. I got very rudely offtracked. Which got me derailed for the last three years and in the end forced me last month to leave the company where I worked since 2001. And due to the separation agreement I signed I can't speak about it publicly. So I'll drop you a PM. Your two posts helped me a lot, about the decision which direction I want to take and I think I can help you by telling my story. And I want to assure you that you will have my full support.

I already told you about that Belgian news reporter, and it was very moving to see how happy and relieved she was when she held her first interview, just after transition. And how accepted she was by her family (wife and two kids), her colleagues and the audience. These interviews were on Dutch TV on the most watched daily talkshow, on the 7PM slot. There are some fragments on youtube, on which you can enable the auto translation. Translation still sucks, but at least you can understand what they are talking about if you read between the lines. Even if you don't understand anything, look at her expression:
1. introduction to first interview after transition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIg7DoPpl8U
2. interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUIOZxITpdQ
3. interview one year later for book promotion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CECgafsR7A

In the description of this vids there are links to the complete interview, but probably it can not be watched abroad and there will be no auto-translation.

So expect a PM in a short or little longer while (I'm very bad with getting my thoughts on paper). If anyone (of the regulars) else wants to join, let me know.

d.sound 06.02.2019 11:35 AM

ah, thanks so much everyone! i am touched by your being touched! i feel encouraged. i feel ambitious for the first time in my life.
