Didn’t watch the tacked-on cat episode. Love that comic story but the adaptation was not doing it for me

yes the cats animation was just a little thing--it had a very harsh moment nevertheless. calliope was very good though: WRITERS LIE!

!@#$%! 10.27.2022 06:50 PM

goddamn, i love eastenders

it's so trashy, hahahahha! why do i have to wait till monday? xD

goes great with a drink btw. people drink like fishes in that show.

kheerat vs ravi. go kheerat! lmfao

this would be a guilty pleasure if i could feel guilt about this sort of shit hahahah.

i'm having so much fun...

Rob Instigator 10.28.2022 09:56 AM

the cat episode was cool, much like the stand-alone Sandman issues.

Rob Instigator 10.28.2022 09:57 AM

watching japanese/UK show Duty/Shame on netflix. so far so good.

i really liked the idea of it hahaha, but it was not a thrilling plot-driven story like the others. but yeah for sure i'll help that kitten dream hahaha.

calliope though, goddamn... if it was in the book i had forgotten. but i loved it. the teleplay made the hipocrisy very current.

hahahaha yes, s1e1 was slower than i remembered. nevertheless it had some cool elements at first, like medieval violence and filth.

it's based on fantasy novels by a polish guy... i found out about the polish guy while looking for the plots so i wouldn't have to watch anymore. either way, i'm done with it.

anyway, DERRY GIRLS remains hilarious so far. watched a few episodes, would recommend a look.

Severian 11.01.2022 06:00 AM

I watched like 4 episodes of The Witcher when it first came out and never went back to it and almost certainly never will.
I dig Cavill as whatshisname but I don’t give a shit about whatever the fuck else was happening — folk singers and hunchbacks becoming regular-backs and shit. Meh

the folk singer was comic relief and not there all the time. the witch with the radical surgeries was an ok character at first.

the one that quickly became annoying however was the 80-year-old-looking "special girl with superpowers" that, ugh, such a tired trope at this point, and not a fun character in the least. also, central to the plot and present in every fucking episode. // eta: she's kind of the embodiment of white privilege hahahahaha. so fucking annoying.

=

anyway THE SERPENT QUEEN had a good and hilarious ending lmao. i mean it's a heavy drama but there's a lot of disturbing humor in it that keeps it fresh.

a+++++++ would buy again hahahahahahaha her face she is so good at microexpressions, hats off to her great work

Rob Instigator 11.01.2022 10:21 AM

Watched the first 2 episodes of Guillermo Del Toro's CABINET OF CURIOSITIES on Netflix. Loved them.

The second ep is based on a Henry Kuttner story! (old sci fi writer)

Diesel 11.03.2022 08:29 AM

Witcher perusal:

Cavill will be hanging his boots up after season 3 and won't be returning for season 4. Liam Hemsworth will be taking over as The Witcher. Regarding Cavill's decision to leave It's strange because he did say when he first secured the role that he'd love to film 7 to 8 seasons with the caveat being the writers sticking to the source material. I've never read the books or played the games so I couldn't possibly comment, however it would seem that season 2 broke certain character relationships ultimately shitting all over the source material, of which Cavill is an uberfan. Hence the decision to leave on principal.

On a personal note this is annoying because my partner is a fan of Cavill as The Witcher and his decision to leave has robbed my annual Witcher themed Birthday/Christmas present obsolete.

Rob Instigator 11.03.2022 08:33 AM

watchin the FUCKING ASTROS!!!!!!

Diesel 11.03.2022 09:01 AM

Well, since I'm here and graced the common folk with my royal presence I may as well update the hordes on what epic television one has been watching.

Tenable: A quiz show on ITV (kill me) hosted by Warwick Davis. Funny fella this lad. He's like one of those friends in the bar who is always cracking jokes and puns non-stop. Hilarious at first but after awhile you start to think to yourself that maybe this guy is a bit of a twat. Doesn't ever shut up and just screams for attention all night. You end up trying to avoid them for the rest of the night only to drink yourself into a stupor in order to handle what has seemingly over the course of the evening turned in to a bar full of Warwick Davis'.

I implore you all to watch this show as the questions are decent but if anything just to overwhelm you with the feeling of finding yourself wanting to chin a dwarf.

Is that sports?

You know what I love about sports? When at some random international tournament the crowd starts to chant USA! USA! USA! and somehow instinctively, you start to feel the cringe deep inside your bones. Love that. Like when deep diver Megan Rapinoe tries to give an impassioned speech about equal rights.

In your defence, English football fans like to overtly partake in ultra aggressively celebrating a goal to embarrassingly high cringe levels not seen anywhere else in europe. Sport innit brav, It's like gan to the pantomime, but more expensive. Drama 101.

Rob Instigator 11.07.2022 10:06 AM

Houston fans are nice. we do not engage in the standard hooliganism.

Diesel 11.07.2022 11:33 AM

Maybe if they unleashed their pent-up anger out on the football stands there'd be less people getting shot on the streeeets.

Inside Man on Netflix
This is a four part one hour mini series. I read a raving review about it in the newspaper, but I didn't really like much of it.

speaking of netflix, a couple of german shows i found there:

BARBAREN (barbarians?)
a fictionalized account of germanic tribes resistance against the romans. not historically accurate, but i liked it

KLEO
a stasi assassin... eh, just watch the first episode. i'm liking it a lot.

Severian 11.13.2022 08:45 AM

Anyone seen any episodes of Avenue 5?

Rob Instigator 11.15.2022 05:16 PM

Been loving the old-school horror anthology vibes of Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, especially as it includes Henry Kuttner and HP Lovecraft stories... so cool.

Also watched the UK/Japan show Giri/Haji (sp?) Honor/Duty. Cool stuff, but a bit draggy

Also enjoying the latest inconsequential but entertaining round of British Bake Off

Well Atlanta is on Hulu exclusively as far as streaming goes, but if you get HBO you absolutely NEED to watch Succession. Emmy wins aside, it really is the best thing on TV

Thar casting choice is weird for sure. I’m 1 episode in. Love the show but each season seems to lose a little something. Olivia Colman was good but Claire Foy was the best. Nice role for Matt Smith early on too

for me olivia colman was really the best. i mean in the role. i started confusing her with the actual one. not that they look the same, just it's hard for me with her to see a person acting, i just see the role.

otoh dana scully as margaret thatcher was hilaaaaarious. the way she spoke hahahaha. sounded like a stroke victim in recovery. i've watched thatcher footage and she didn't sound like that at all--she spoke fast.

All the actors seem to really study vocal patterns — see both Diana actors and all 3 Elizabeth actors in particular.
They really lean into vocal quirks, and Thatcher definitely had a bit of a … uh, dignified drawl? Honestly it never occurred to me that Gillian Anderson wasn’t nailing it but maybe she accentuated Thatcher’s here-and-there quirks a bit too much.
I dunno.

i don't know about quirks, but anderson... left... a massive... dead... space... between... each.... word... like... she's... searching... for... the next... thought... whereas thatcher strung long sentences and complicated ideas together with great ease.
https://youtu.be/nqXGxmixsVE
https://youtu.be/YZQgFRfz7Og

she might have got the tone almost right, but definitely missed the rhythm. maybe it was not feasible doing both things at once--she's only human after all and impersonating someone is no easy task.

!@#$%! 11.26.2022 09:31 PM

fuck fuck fuck, just finished derry girls and i wasn't prepared for it

what made this show so great? not sure yet, stuff still unprocessed.

but watch it, unless you're dead inside lololol

_tunic_ 11.27.2022 02:59 AM

I'll put Derry Girls on my To Watch list then.
I need to finish the second season of Warrior Nun first. started with it before the football began, didn't really like it so far but perhaps it will improve. The first season had some sense of humor, the 2nd season is severely lacking it so far. And I forgot who all the characters were. They were crying that somebody died, and I had no clue who that was

Last night I saw the first episode of Star Wars Andor, the first two episodes were aired on TV. It looks very good. I hope they will show the full season, but I don't think they will. I think it's just a promotion stunt to get people to watch the remaining episodes on Disney channel, which I don't have.

OK, yeah, I see what you’re saying. She tricked me by nailing the tone, but she didn’t quite land the cadence, eh. Oh well, she still did pretty well I reckon.

best show on netflix for me, right along with bojack. totally different shows, but both feature great writing before anything else is added.

i really hope you like it and laugh as much as i did, as we seem to have a similar appreciation of humor. there are aspects of this that are quietly demented and hilaaaarious. others get you in the gut by surprise. a great blend of comedy and drama. plus history close enough (for me) to have seen first-hand. anyway, great stuff.

i needed subtitles, otherwise it would all have been 100% incomprehensible to me, but by the end i got used to their accents. dammit, i miss them now. will likely rewatch it all.

I finally watched the entire first season of We Are Lady Parts yesterday, it's (only) 6 30 minute episodes. Recorded it from TV nearly a year ago. Season 2 is apparently in the works, not sure when (or even where) it will air.

If you have a chance, you should give it a try. It's a British dark comedy series about a bunch of Muslim women that start a punk-rock band.

Here's a 15 minute clip

update after actually watching that clip:
it actually looks like a pilot or something, the story is very much the same as the first episode, but some of the actors and scenery are different. Not the main characters though.

tw2113 12.14.2022 03:33 PM

Finished Wednesday the other day.

New episode of Willow available that I'll probably catch tonight.
