Mythra-Death and Destiny 7" EP 1979

With the advent of NWOBHM, numerous young outfits were emerging on the scene; one that caught the attention was Mythra, a five-piece group from the Newcastle area.
Released on the Guardian label, it sold over 15,000 copies before Pinnacle Records signed the band to their Street Beat label. Mythra were probably most reminiscent of Judas Priest; but it's difficult not to draw similarities between the younger bands and the more successfully established outfits. Take a listen to this EP - the track "Death And Destiny" is a classic!!

The Saints - I’m Stranded 7″

April 11th, 2007 by The Flakes // Drummer

In my world the Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop was the first punk 7inch released in June(?) 1976. Then these sleazy aussie guys hit the world in August 1976 with this. One of my all time faves. Can’t listen to I’m Stranded enough. 500 pressed on their own Fatal label before Harvest signed them and quickly released it again with a sleeve. My copy is scratchy and nice.

By the way I haven’t figured out who’ve written the stuff on the b-side. Anyone?

Now over to some real content:
Like a snake calling on the phone
I’ve got no time to be alone
there is some one coming at me all the time
babe I think I’ll lose my mind
’cause I’m stranded on my own
stranded far from home
I’m riding on a midnight train
& everybody looks just the same
a subway light it’s dirty reflection
I’m lost I don’t have a direction
I’m stranded etc etc
Look at me looking at you
there ain’t a thing that I can do
you are lost your mind is a whirl
baby such a stupid girl
I’m stranded etc etc
Livin’ in a world insane
they cut out some heart & some brain
‘been filling it up with dirt
do you know how much it hurts…
to be…stranded etc….

Stranded I’m so far from home
Stranded yeah I am on my own
Stranded why don’t you leave me alone

Quote:

Teiji Ito (surname Ito; b. Tokyo, Japan, 1935; d. Haiti, 1982) was a Japanese composer and performer. He is best known for his scores for the avant-garde films by Maya Deren.
Ito was born in Tokyo in 1935, into a theatrical family. His father, Yuji Ito, was a composer and costume designer, and his mother, Teiko Ono, was a dancer who worked in both traditional and classical genres. Ito moved with his family to New York at the age of six. In 1952, at the age of seventeen, he began composing music for the films of Maya Deren. He traveled with her to Haiti in 1955, learning ceremonial and secular drumming techniques from the legendary Haitian musician Coyote.
Ito had a long and productive career, composing music for Broadway and Hollywood, drama, and dance. His works feature an innovative combination of sounds and often utilize musical instruments from many world cultures, which he played himself. His music is not as well known as that of many of his contemporaries because few recordings of his music were available until the late 20th century.
In 1961 he composed a score for a New York production of Alfred Jarry's King Ubu by The Living Theatre, which was released on CD by Tzadik Records in 1998. He won an Obie Award for his theater music in the 1960-61 season. In 1962 he composed music for dancer Jean Erdman's musical play The Coach with the Six Insides. In 1963 he composed the score for the original Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Ito was married three times. He married Maya Deren in the late 1950s. His third wife was the photographer and filmmaker Cherel Winett Ito (1947-1999).[1]
He died in 1982 while visiting Haiti.

Teiji Ito also did the soundtrack for Harry Smith's "Early Abstractions" after the fact. Can be found in the Porkster's thread: http://sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=15366

I'm not sure what date this recording was actually broadcast as it clearly is a repeat. Don't let this deter you though as this is brilliant. Crass were one of the few punk bands who REALLY were genuine and not some kind of bandwagon jumpers. Formed in 1977 in Essex their first release was an eighteen track album called "The Feeding Of The 5000" and was released in 1978 through Small Wonder Records. Originally the album contained a track called "Reality Asylum" but it was removed after protests from workers in the pressing plant that the track was blasphemous. It was replaced with a track called "The Sound Of Free Speach" which was actually nothing more than a couple of minues of silence although this track sounds rather nice on my copy due to the amount of surface noise it contains. This prompted Crass to set up their own label "Crass Records" for their future releases so they could never be silenced again.
This is the only session Crass recorded for the BBC.

Burning Star Core & Lambsbread - Live in St. Louis (2006, Maim & Disfigure CDR, U.S.A)

Special thanks to Dave Archer for this wonderful live document between Burning Star Core & Lambsbread. “Live in St. Louis” climbs a mountain of psychedelia where the higher you go, the air thins w/ rapid suffocating cymbal action, though the spirits of Yeh’s violining grows more powerful through drone & thunderous scraping. This live release is an awesome transcendental experience. The difference between this & say Yeh’s collaborations w/ Hototogisu is that “Live in St. Louis” has more in common w/ Cale era Velvet Underground than Tony Conrad. The addition of the freeform floating guitar lines adds a nice linear haze that is quite wistful until sudden riffs charge periodically jarring the atmosphere. Amazing!

Here’s some more Bailey & Parker, but w/ the nice addition of percussionist Han Bennink. Different from “Arch Duo” obviously because of the addition of percussion, but also this session has a more rolling feel to it that propels the listener along into each solo & then out again. The music folds & unfolds displaying an astonishing chemistry between these fine players.

Robert Lee is the brother of martial artist Bruce Lee. Robert released this album, Robert Lee Sings… The Ballad of Bruce Lee, in 1975 in dedication to his older brother, who had died in 1973. Although he does sing all the songs, Robert has a hand in writing only 3 of them, posted here. The song “Parting”, features lyrics written by Bruce Lee.

Loop - The World in Your Eyes

1. 16 Dreams, 2:50
2. Head On, 2:35
3. Burning World, 9:33
4. Rocket USA, 5:14
5. Spinning, 6:29
6. Deep Hit, 6:05
7. I'll Take You There, 6:39
8. Brittle Head Girl, 4:32
9. Burning Prisma, 12:42
10. Spinning Spun Out, 4:46

The World In Your Eyes compiles the entirety of Loop's 16 Dreams and Spinning 12" singles (their first two singles) and adds four extra songs. Their earlier phase tends to concentrate centrally on pounding a giant riff into submission with the least amount of backing necessary, with all the sunshine happiness of the most downered Stooges sub-blues imagined. Generally, The World In Your Eyes captures some of Loop's most straight-ahead material, and Robert Hampson's vocals are at their least fiddled with, production-wise. Bex's Spartan drum patterns usually consist of "thwack," "thwack-thwack," or "thwack-thwack-pish"; she might not stand a chance in King Crimson, but she fits the bill perfectly on minimally stomping songs like "16 Dreams" and "Head On." The ten-minute "Burning World" and 13-minute extended version of "Burning Prisma" (how many other bands do extended versions of ten-minute songs?) both have the entrancing qualities of the best Spacemen 3; the lengthier version features some extended soloing that avoids flash and wank. "Brittle Head Girl"'s melancholia strikes upon third album Velvet Underground, bizarrely using shades of new wave synth. A brilliantly fevered cover of Suicide's "Rocket USA" (from a Peel Session) captures all the rush and frenzy of the original; Hampson's vocals do Alan Vega proud, evoking all the evacuated headspace required: "Gonna crash/Gonna die." A racing rhythm box drives it in the same manner of the original, but the stun guitars add something that the earlier version arguably lacks. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Mine too. Thunderbolt Pagoda should've covered that, not the one that they did.

Burning Prisma is rather disappointing though.

I used to cover it with Salamander in the early 90s.

The Hafler Trio - Where are You?

this is the story of two people that were not brothers, and the things they got up to in basements when not reading strange books. how did the dead walk again? how did such things get hidden and swept under so many carpets? well, there we have it. and you can too. all dusted off and eloquently rendered in non-real time for your dancing and drinking pleasure. go easy on the tincture of opium.

the tapes for the project that was to be David Tibet 93 and Andrew M. McKenzie (variously discussed and planned as 'DOG BLOOD RISING', finally becoming mooted as 'DO' when the first title was used for an appearance at the Equinox Event) are all that is left of a friendship and collaboration that started when David Michael Bunting, as he was then known, would come into the Newcastle branch of Virgin Records where McKenzie then worked, and get discounted records in exchange for rare esoteric books and other information. it was here that McKenzie introduced Tibet to the work of Nurse With Wound and other luminaries, and when Tibet moved to London, McKenzie would stay with him, where on one occasion they finally recorded raw material and planned their project. previously, McKenzie had supplied backing tapes for the first Current 93 performances, which can be heard on the now deleted but often bootlegged Staalplaat release of C93 live at NL Centrum, mixed by Steven Stapleton.

due to never explained circumstances regarding the termination of their association by Tibet, the tapes were never worked on until now. they consist of various ethnic ritual instruments and voice recordings, made with a variant of the well-known Binaural Stereo technique in the squat that Tibet was living in Vauxhall (with Annie Anxiety, D&V, and other Crass associates), in between the first and second Current 93 albums, and reflects his concerns both textually and sonically at the time.

the tapes have been worked on in ways commensurate with the ideas then being discussed, which fit well into the series of pieces investigating voice, 'essence' and language currently being processed by McKenzie within the framework of The Hafler Trio.

this project reflects a genuine desire to square a circle, and tie the shoelaces of a pair of boots that should have been fastened years ago.

The Clash - The Vanilla Tapes (from 'London Calling - 25th anniversary Legacy Edition)

Previously thought lost, cassettes of "The Vanilla Tapes" were recently discovered in storage by Clash guitarist Mick Jones. Of greatest interest for fans will be "Paul's Tune," which morphed into "The Guns of Brixton," a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me," "Up-Toon," which turned into "The Right Profile," and an early version of "Clampdown" titled "Working and Waiting."

An in-progress take of the title cut reveals alternate lyrics and song structure, having not yet arrived at the snarling version eventually recorded for the album. Other unreleased items include the country-ish "Lonesome Me," the reggae-leaning "Where You Gonna Go (Soweto)," "Heart and Mind" and the instrumental "Walkin' the Slidewalk."

Track Listing:

"Hateful"
"Rudie Can't Fail"
"Paul's Tune"
"I'm Not Down"
"4 Horsemen"
"Koka Kola, Advertising & Cocaine"
"Death or Glory"
"Lover's Rock"
"Lonesome Me"
"The Police Walked in 4 Jazz"
"Lost in the Supermarket"
"Up-toon"
"Walking the Slidewalk"
"Where You Gonna Go (Soweto)"
"The Man in Me"
"Remote Control"
"Working and Waiting"
"Heart and Mind"
"Brand New Cadillac"
"London Calling"
"Revolution Rock"

due to never explained circumstances regarding the termination of their association by Tibet, the tapes were never worked on until now. they consist of various ethnic ritual instruments and voice recordings, made with a variant of the well-known Binaural Stereo technique in the squat that Tibet was living in Vauxhall (with Annie Anxiety, D&V, and other Crass associates), in between the first and second Current 93 albums, and reflects his concerns both textually and sonically at the time.

the tapes have been worked on in ways commensurate with the ideas then being discussed, which fit well into the series of pieces investigating voice, 'essence' and language currently being processed by McKenzie within the framework of The Hafler Trio.

this project reflects a genuine desire to square a circle, and tie the shoelaces of a pair of boots that should have been fastened years ago.

Doo-Dooettes - Think Space (1975),LP,USA (NWW list!,LAFMS)

Great release from Los Angeles Free Music Society weirdos Doo-Dooettes, related with Airway, Le Forte Four, the Residents, Half Japanese, John Duncan, Boyd Rice. "Group improvisations intended to accompany a film on the Viking space probe in 1975. Includes the original Doo-Dooettes lineup; Dennis Duck, Juan Gomez, Fredrik Nilsen, Tom Recchion, Harold Schroeder.." "The unearthing of the LAFMS recordings is experimental rock history at its most historical and hysterical -- a completely bizarro and further-out counterpart to the LA punk scene." -- Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth.
Note that "Think Space " project was unreleased till now that Cortical Foundation released it on cd version acompanied by a 7" with recordings from 1977(not included here).

Airway - Live at the Lace ,LP 1978, USA (NWW list!/LAFMS label)

2 track LP on LAFMS recs from 1978 by Airway. Two long improv freak outs of distorted garbled greatness.Guitars, drums, sax, mandolin, bass and "vocals" all get a heavy dose of electronic treatments.
It was recorded live at Lace Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, April 27, 1978. This incarnation featured Vetza (vocals), Tom Recchion (drums), Rick Potts (electric mandolin), Dennis Duck (sax), Juan Gomez (electric guitar & bass), Chip Chapman (processing mix & microsynthesizer) and Joe Potts (tapes processing & mix).
The first pressing came with color xeroxes of autopsy photos on both sides (the credits state that the model is Vetza, which is incorrect; the 'model' is a real autopsy subject!).

"Airway was a musical ensemble based within the Los Angeles Free Music Society.
Airway was initially a solo project of Le Forte Four member Joe Potts. The first release was the Airway 7", which featured subliminal messages to coincide with an art exhibition in Tokyo. In August 1978 Airway made their live debut at the Lace Gallery. This lineup featured Potts and Chip Chapman on electronics, Vetza on vocals, Rick Potts on mandolin, Dennis Duck on saxophone, Juan Gomez on bass, and Tom Recchion on drums. They attempted to create subliminal messages beneath a wall of noise by using tape delay. Recordings from the performance were released as Live At Lacy by the Los Angeles Free Music Association.
Throughout 1978 the group performed more concerts with differing lineups, but always with Joe Potts' subliminal message experiments. The project disbanded in 1979. Airway reformed in 1998 for a performance at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, which featured 18 musicians. Recordings from the performance were released as Beyond the Pink Live.
Their sound influenced the Japanese noise band Hijokaidan"

one from the H&B collection

Fushitsusha - The Caution Appears

One of my personal favorite Fushitsusha records, coming in just behind the two double live albums on PSF (available from forced exposure). The Caution Appears is perhaps Fushitsusha's noisiest and most uninhibited recording, making it an immediately gratifying affair for those of us wained on the noise freakouts of Borbetomagus and the like (surely I'm not the only one). A standout (and underappreciated!) entry in Fushitsusha and Keiji Haino's incredible discography.

Various Artists - Greek Electronic Music - 1 (1969)

This is a fantastic compilation by six Greek composers who each take a stab at using an EMS VCS3 modular synthesizer as their primary sound source. These pieces are not limited to said synth, a wealth of primitive studio techniques are used to brighten the edges of these works, for example the piece by Yannis Vlachopoulos mixes swells of strings, children playing, & Greek folk music in & out of the track. Seriously, I’ve been eating up all of this old school modular synth music recently. I suggest you do the same; it’s quite an adventurous world of electronic music. A world so rich w/ wondrous works of art that makes us appreciates the current electronic climate of today.

Kawabata Makoto - Guitar Solo II

1. Mitsuha
2. Hangon No Shirushi

Makoto, mastermind of the ever-astonishing Acid Mothers Temple, released this droning two-part escape pod in 1998. Fans of AMT wont' find any suprises here, as there is drone to spare, but there is no Iommi-worship to be found on this recording. The atmosphere is set and kept, leaving the listener to discern the subtleties. One of my favorite drone records, period.

The More You Know...
Year: 1972
Country: America

A fantastic double album documenting the unearthly sounds emitted from a giant hilltop harp constructed by a group of early '70s California hippies. The resulting sounds are eerie, ambient and pretty intense. This is organic drone at its finest.

Insanely good. What a truly amazing find. Thanks so much.

Had no idea such an instrument even existed. Now i want one, badly!

The usual 'spread rep' scenario.

Wait! There's more!

Roger Winfield's - Windsongs

http://rapidshare.com/files/48899461...field.rar.html

WINDSONGS

The material for "WINDSONGS" was recorded in Southern Spain and edited in the UK. The first part of the album is a real "wind symphony" in four movements featuring (of course) the North, South, East and West winds. The second part Windsongs 1-4 features a variety of moods from different winds.

The bass-heavy North Wind will blow your head off, the South Wind should chill you out, the eerily frosty East Wind will take through a wintry landscape and the West wind will gently sail you home again. It really is a journey, you will transcend time and never be completely the same again.

Lots of people must have agreed , because WINDSONGS eventually reached No 1 in the New Age charts!

2.South Wind-9.06
3.East Wind-8.13
4.West Wind-8.22
5.Windsong 1-5.13

Aeolian harps are played entirely by the action of the wind. These fascinating instruments were much loved in past centuries and Roger Winfield has now revived them and explores the various ethereal sounds that the wind produces. The result is an ever changing pattern of strange and beautiful music providing a unique listening experience.

RAH!

I was listening to the John Balance tape that you've posted on this thread a while ago. Total gold, and unique to match.

Glad you liked it. I still haven't found those versions anywhere else.

sarramkrop 08.14.2007 06:37 AM

I thought that this might interest the Radiohead fans, as Thom Yorke sang on on Drugstore's ' El Presidente'. I used to really like Drugstore, I wonder what happened to them. I have a lot of these tapes you'd get on the NME, Melody Maker, Select etc etc. Every now and then I bring them out and listen to them to see if there's anything that I still like. Occasionally you still find the older ones from the 80's in charity shops, and the difference in the choice of music they would put on them is remarkable. Anyway, here it is:

Fortunately, there was something remotely more critically interesting and rare in the tape bin this time, but it wasn't in great condition. This is a tape compilation released with the April 29, 1995 issue of Melody Maker.

Some of these songs are presumably not available for purchase even anywhere else. The Goya Dress and Schtum tracks are not listed on discogs at least. Drugstore's track with Radiohead dude Thom Yorke may be their best known (El President) but I'm not sure I'm liking it better than this earlier track. The My Life Story Motorcade track is pretty catchy, but still not really my favorite cup of tea. My Life Story was apparently started primarily by Jake Shillingford whose most recent band is Exileinside. I'm not sure the new band sound is pushing any new limits, but the track Butterfly Wings is quite pretty. Anyone can feel free to explain to me the whole appeal of this genre - I just bring you what's in the tape bin :)

Side one
Drugstore - Speaker 12
My Life Story - Motorcade

Side two
Goya Dress - Scorch (demo version)
Schtum - New Brunswick
