Fuck yeah! Schnittke is fucking incredible. INCREDIBLE. Apart from Nagasaki, pretty much everything I've heard of is his is amazing. Yes! And you can't go wrong with Kremer either (even if he does play Bach like he's got a rocket up his arse).

i got this for my birthday

i love ligeti.

Ah! That's really annoying, because that looks great, but it also looks like there's loads of crossovers with this, which I already have. You can't go wrong with Ligeti though (apart from his pretty slack forays into electronic music on disc 5 of the one I've got, and his statist stuff).

The Earl Of Slander 01.14.2011 03:53 PM

Someone got me this as a late Christmas present, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet:

Being fairly new to classical music, I haven't heard an Gorecki at all, so I'm super looking forward to it for my post exam day of musical therapy on Sunday...

fugazifan 01.14.2011 05:02 PM

im pretty sure that i studied that symphony and that it was pretty good.

This is the best ever composed in classical music:
John Zorn's masterpiece "Magick"

I'm just going to step in here and say 'no' to the above, and also point out that Gorecki is unbearable tripe.

Decayed Rhapsody 01.15.2011 09:57 AM

Wot?? I like his string quartets, the ones that have really prominent folk melodies. Don't know if I'd go far as to call him tripe.

Glice 04.01.2011 04:24 AM

Try St Florian (2nd symphony). Requiem is perhaps a bit straighter than a lot of his stuff - Florian has the choral element, but a lot more recognisably 'Schnittke' things in it as well.

Can this thread get a big bump?

come on all ye who know about classical because I am such a beginner it hurts.

I've been really enjoying Messian's Fette des belles eaux lately. & lots & lots of Debussy. Debussy wasn't really mentioned in this thread. What is everyone's thoughts on this man?

fugazifan 05.22.2012 05:56 PM

I was never really that into Schubert - the trout's ok, but not something I'd go to immediately. A mate of mine insisted I listened to the 9th and a couple of the other symphonies. He's right, Schubert is pretty awesome, the 9th particularly.

I haven't really had any great revelations with t'classical of late. Hosakawa, Gubdailina, Grisey, Schnittke are sitting in my recently listened to pile. I keep thinking I need to spend more time with Lutoslawski - anyone know what's good of his? I have the Naxos Concerto for Orchestra and fancy I should get more.

fugazifan 05.23.2012 05:40 PM

I think that lutoslawski's string quartets are good.

and schubert is amazing. i assume that you are familiar with his Wintereisse. if not i highly recomend it. the now late D.F. Diskau sang it wonderfully.

i had always somewhat avoided Schubert's symphonies for some reason and only listened to his lieder and quartets. but his 9th just blew me away recently and i have been listening to it quite frequently.

Glice 05.24.2012 02:35 AM

I have Wintereisse - may even have been the first thing of his I got. Never really gelled with me for some reason. I have a bit of a blind spot with lieder. Mahler's lieder is about the only one I ever got to grips with. I should change this, right?
