re: McLaren - the idea was, by many accounts, theived from Throbbing Gristle/ COUM transmissions' music and aesthetic, but with this idea of making it more like Hell/ the Ramones. And failed on both parts, although I quite like some Pistols. Whatever, the Pistols' music is little more than borrowed Faces riffs.

TheyLiveByNight 04.27.2006 10:41 AM

They may have been covered already (I ain't wading through fifteen pages to find out) but I think Radiohead are a bunch of whining, po-faced, joyless fucktards.

A funnier title for this thread would've been 'Tipping the Sacred Cows'.

The Birthday Party are a lot better than Nick Cave solo.
Bob Dylan ripped off Woody Guthrie (it might be a fact though)

Bad moon rising sucks

chuck norris 04.27.2006 11:47 AM

Michael Bolton is a really sexy guy.

Too bad his music stinks...

dietzer123 04.27.2006 11:52 AM

on the bob dylan one i have to agree somewhat on the earlier stuff. given his lyrics were way better but the basic concept was basically guthries.

Inhuman 04.27.2006 12:09 PM

My Unpopular music opinion: There are way better Sonic Youth albums than Daydream Nation. I'm more into their early 80's music over the stuff you hear in the DDN/Dirty/Goo era.

Sergeant Pepper's is not the best Beatles album at all.

West european and American music (from Beatles to Cardigans, from Elvis to Nirvana) would sound all the same to an alien from outerspace.

The alien would say: "The songstructures are all the same, the singers all sound alike, the instruments are all equal, the studios that produced them are all the same, and bands all look alike."

"So whats the big deal with music? Why does anyone care?"

nothing unpopular at all about that. gershwin was incredible.

other (potentially) unpopular opinions (and apologies if these have already been said -- i'm just getting to this thread):

--classical music is, overall, better and more well-thought out than other genres.

--incesticide is extraordinarily underrated.

--pearl jam are gifted songwriters.

--musicians who play pure noise are psychological cases, not artists.

--i never really liked the beatles, with the exception of within you without you.

--most music that explicitly falls under the label "indie" is nonsense.

--(this one's going to kill me) stone temple pilots had their moments.

--gregorian chant is hauntingly beautiful, even if it is religious music.

--very few electronica artists can pull off sounding original.

--"free jazz" is a travesty.

--most of the syr's are unlistenable garbage.

Yep plenty of them. It might be hard for some people to comprehend this, but rock music is pretty swell.

Onani Nic 05.04.2006 12:28 AM

I don't listen to any classical music, I just cant relate to it as it seems so elitist and out of my reach. People can't get some friends together and make an orchestra score, but they can get some guitars/drums/bass/kazoo/flute/sax or whatever they want and start a band.

Also

Fuck learning music, I dont want to know scales or even what note I'm playing. I hate an ear and a brain I can tell what sounds good and so many people who could be good musicians are so limited by what they have learnt.

You say "lets Jam" they say "In what key?".

CHOUT 05.04.2006 12:58 AM

Unpopular respondingopinion #1: People who think classical music is elitist are in fact merely incapable of turning on a radio.

Unpopular respondingopinion #2: The instances of Western popular music proceeding entirely intuitively and originally are fewer and farther between than is often realised.

Unpopular respondingopinion #3: If you can play an instrument, you can and should learn the concepts and ideas behind what you are doing. No matter how many times an American punk band tries to be original, they will still be musically derivative until they have a better understanding of music in its totality.

Unpopular respondingopinion #4: Popular Western Rock music is largely shit, idiotic music bolstered by idiotic consumers.

Popularandcorrect opinion #1: I am always right.

Popularandcorrect opinion #2: This is always the case.

Popularandcorrect opinion #3: Any attempt to argue with this is merely an enactment of Hegelian dialectics, Ie I am the master and you are commited to my slavery.

candymoan 05.04.2006 08:36 AM

don't you just love intimidation?

Glice 05.04.2006 08:45 AM

Does it still count as intimidation in the context of a thread entitled 'unpopular musical opinions'?

I neglected to mention that, while people sticking to a set key is annoying, the majority of non-learned musicians do that regardless of whether they're conscious of it. Masayuki Takayanagi was notoriously one of the quickest sight-readers in 60's Japanese Jazz, which is how he manages to sustain his non-tonal free-improvisation, not because he doesn't know his way around a fretboard. I personally find that, without at least a little technical understanding, improvisers nearly always go back to tired rock structures.
