Where does The Ascension by Glenn Branca fit into the "noise" debate? I have it, and i love it very much.

Tokolosh 10.03.2007 04:54 PM

Another golden thread.

hentai lacerator pwns!!!! covered in fun is fucking amazing.

robert doesn't consider either realicide or hentai lacerator as noise, he says it's more like crazy hardcore.

atsonicpark 10.03.2007 05:36 PM

Ikara, did you read my mind? That was my pick for the next classics album thread that I do..

Anyway, it's considered "modern classical with prepared guitars", though a noise influence is definitely prevalent. It's like Fred Frith - Guitar Solos; it's honestly just noise mostly (though it's great!), but you know.. it's "modern composition" !

Everyneurotic, it was confirmed about an hour ago that scissor shock/hentai lacerator is playing together in a few weeks. Come up for it :)

Everyneurotic 10.03.2007 05:40 PM

i wish man, i wish.

my editor read yesterday my review of covered in fun and bursted out laughing when he read "40 songs in 14 minutes". good thing i left out that every song title contains the word "suck"

have fun.

And for your argument saying "Not everything needs to be hooky and warm and fuzzy to make it listenable," that is just EXACTLY what I would expect a huge noise fan to say.

I'm HARDLY a "huge noise fan". The most noise I own is three Wolf Eyes albums. (I guess this is a really late response, but...) And anyway, I didn't read yr whole post carefully, so I'm sorry for any false shit I said.

I won't say there is no skill involved, because that will start flames like none other on this board, but even the biggest noise "musicians" have to admit there isn't much skill involved. It serves the purpose of clearing the mental pallet, and maybe breaking the usual brain paths you form so as to keep you open to new stuff, but on a musical level, I'm just tired of it. Make some music for god's sake, not just noise. I had this revelation while listening to Robert Ashley's Wolfman Tapes. Yes, the same album I myself uploaded to the board no longer than a week ago I believe, and with great enthusiasm I might add. While I had heard it before and thought I enjoyed it, all I could think was "What in the world is this crap?" I mean, let's look at it for what it is. It's a guy who is praised for doing nothing but making noise. Seriously, stop with the pretentiousness and take off the hipster glasses and see it for what it is. IT IS NOT MUSIC. IT IS NOISE.

quite cool avatar, sir. I think Dr. Avalanche would approve.

see, i dont know how to classify it.
But the title track makes me cry.
Its the only instrumental piece to make me do so.
And "noise" is seen as such an academic genre... all i know is that album is incredible

I enjoy a melody

Kylerobert 10.09.2007 12:49 AM

Everytime I listen to noise, I think "Wow, anyone could do this" or "This might be cool if there was a visual (like a movie playing)"

So what do you think about Sonic Youth?

Kylerobert 10.09.2007 01:20 AM

Sonic Youth isn't noise nor do you have to like noise to listen to Sonic Youth.

SynthethicalY 10.09.2007 01:28 AM

That is one of the biggest fallacies ever. In almost all their songs they incorporate noise into it. I agree you don't have to like noise, neither do I. But I guess this all comes into what you like. So maybe noise is not for you, but you can't dismiss it as something childish.
