The Sell Phonies, but we haven't played out in forever. I did a dj gig a few months ago, but that doesn't count.

Haven't been on here in a minute...hope you are alll well.
I'm playing music with this band Blurred Out in Oakland right now and this is our first ever single. Our sound is noisy melodic indie rock which I hope the SYG community will enjoy. Thanks! https://blurredout.bandcamp.com/track/meadows |

The feed gets glitchy a little while in, after which the sound is slightly off sync from the video but you'll get the point.

don’t worry i wasn’t looking— i just blasted it through the speakers and it filled the house it’s damn great and i love it. things were going great then i started having trouble with stutter even at 144p but that’s on my garbage internet connection + cheap phone, so i can’t hear it continuously. i’ll retry on a different device in a moment. just wanted to stop and say this first because it’s really fucking good. |
Thanks very much for saying so. I've not been a bass player in a group before, but with Jason on guitar it really is quite satisfying to lay down the bottom end and just listen to him go. It's definitely glitchy on every device I've tried, but only for a few minutes in the middle of the set.. Maybe I can convince him to reupload the show.

Looked pretty damn good to me on the YouTube app on my iPhone. Granted, I didn’t have time to watch/listen to the whole thing in one sitting, so I skipped around just a bit to get a feel for how it played out. You guys are *good.* like, shit man, I’ve been in several bands but never one this professional sounding. I think we kind of embraced a sloppy approach to ripping off Don Cab and Slint (or, in other cases, Television and early Costello), but had we gone for a better sound we still wouldn’t have been able to do this. Hat’s off to you. Goddamn. I miss playing music. |
Oh and for a first-time bassist, you’re great. It’s a really satisfying instrument when you learn to appreciate how essential low-end is to a band’s sound and style. Not something I think a lot of people know who don’t play. Bass fucking rules.

It was easy enough in this case, but thanks very much. I've been playing guitar for 35 years, and been playing with these guys in various configurations for 20 or so, so we all know each other's styles and needs. We're in another group together too (where I play regular guitar), but in this one he drives the bus. And what a great driver he is. I love backing him up and playing the heavy riffs under his freakouts.

i offlined his metalgazer on spottifried (were you in it?), and it’s good, but the new stuff sounds better

That one is the oldest one. And it's just him, as are most of the recorded works. Matt and I are only on the newest recording, which is up on Bandcamp. Only two pieces but one of them is pretty long. There are more, but it was hard to form a cohesive album out of them. Jason's solo recordings are all over the map. He's a very multi-dimensional musician. cometsovcupid.bandcamp.com/album/scythian-ep |
When Jason moved back to Minneapolis from Fargo a while ago, we decided he should also be in Thunderbolt Pagoda. 5 people is a lot of people in a band, but it sounds pretty big with him in the mix. This is us at the same venue a year prior for the same event. I might have posted it here last year. Two songs from the set.

soooo... it streamed beautifully on my ipad this evening and it was really great.
but now with everything properly loaded i did hear some horrible glitches roughly between 15:30 and 18:00. so yeah, needs a reupload. now not to seed any discord, ha ha ha, but from all i really like the most the sound of that fat growling bass— very very good and a ton of fun. i’m atypical in that i generally like bass and percussion more than i do guitar, and for me it’s no exception here, except more. the guitar is great of course, but what makes me feel like the dinosaurs are roaming earth again here is that heavy heavy bass. |
^ Like that... “dinosaurs roaming the earth.” Mos def.
I too have an atypical affection for bass and percussion. I even enjoy hearing a bass guitar carry a song, or be played like a guitar, a la Three-Mile Pilot. That is, if it’s done right. Haven’t listened to the Thunderbolt Pagoda one yet. Will. |
