Anyone good at mastering a live recording thats a bit all over the place? I taped Oren Ambarchi last week in Dublin and having trouble making it all level sounding. The volume dips and peaks quite a number of times.
Hoping to tape Pika vs Makoto on Friday too for those who can't get enough Japanese psych recordings. |
I could give it a go, put it up somewheres and I'll have a look. I've got soundforge and cool edit and some skills

Melvins Slow Jams Volume 2
Posted this at Skully's site and thought I might as well post it here as well since SY fans and Melvins fans tend to overlap and I've never contributed anything here. Kind of a shady contribution to begin with since I used other folks' bootlegs to build this rather than my own recordings. Not sure of the sources at this point so apologies for the lack of credit due to the original tapers.
Melvins Slow Jams Volume 2: March of the Charmicarmicat Being a huge Melvins fan, I've probably seen them play live nearly as many times as I've ever masturbated (i.e almost as many times as I've seen Sonic Youth). And every time I hope to hear them play the 12+ minutes of Glory that is "Charmicarmicat" from Eggnog, the first Melvins tape to come into my life. Maybe seen it happen 2 or 3 times in person, which could have only been improved on if they played that song for the entire set (asked Buzz about this and his response was "no, we do have some other songs we know how to play, you should check them out"). Since that won't be happening, I've spliced together about 5 or so different live versions of Charmicarimcat to create one hour long verson. There is some fucking about with the source material (e.g. feedback samples and bass adjustments used in an half-assed attempt to improve continuity, crowd noise removal, etc). Not a polished slab by any means, although it makes for decent zoned out night driving music, esepcially on the way towards Joshua Tree or Vegas. There is a volume 1 of a slightly different nature. Marc Ribot, concert solo
a solo electric guitar set from L'Ampli, Pau in France from February of 2003, Marc turns in a stunning version of "St. James Infirmery". Marc makes every note count, nothing is superfluous. It is as if the ancient sound of the earliest blues stills ring true today, so many years later. John Zorn's "Etude" is next and it sounds as if it is from another world, filled with twisted fragments, feedback, violent changes and all sorts of strange noises. It works well because it is completely focused and sounds like the darker side of modern life, just as scary as those ancient blues songs that we hold inside. Marc plays a 500 year song about memory called , "Recuerdos del la Alhambra", on his acoustic guitar. It is a difficult flamenco-like piece that has Marc hands playing a few different parts simultaneously. It is fascinating to watch since it has some unexpected twists and turns in direction. Marc punctuates "I'm Confessin'" with bits of spaced-out feedback, adding an aura of mystery and the haze of a psychedelic mist to this enchanting piece.
