They do sound pretty similar, good catch. But a lot of SY leads and rhythms sound pretty identical, similar chords and voicings and all that. With how much they've written, I bet they sometimes forget how a song goes and rewrite it subconsciously.

I think there is nothing else same as rhythm. |
I'm going out on a limb to say Green Day sounds like Belle and Sebastian.
|
"State That I am In" by Belle and Sebastian reminds me of...
.. agh! Some Bob Dylan song- a big one- that I can't recall the name of because my brain isn't functioning!! Anyway, they basically completely ripped it off. I hate Belle and Sebastian. |
The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" -> Lee Ranaldo's "Waiting On A Dream"

Another one: Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" -> R.E.M.'s "Endgame" |

thats so obvious even Cobain knew it! |

that was what I was thinking ; ) |
Alta and More Than A Feeling don't share anything aside from a 4-chord foundation. Not even the strumming position is the same, and the feeling of the songs is totally different. I've never agreed with this comparison.

Did anyone mention Yo La Tengo - Cherry Chapstick and Thurston Moore - Fri/end yet?
|
G n' R: "Civil War"
Dylan: "Knocking on Heaven's Door" (which GnR covered, right? Did they do that on purpose or were they fucking stupid?) Both use a I-V-VI chord change with the same rhythm. Try singing it: "I don't need your heaven's door. (hey hey yeah yeah yeah)" And "war" sounds like "door!" Again, purposeful or stupid? There's a fine line between homage and theft. |
Joy Division - Transmission = SY - My Friend Goo
It sounds so much alike.. |

If you squint, tie one hand behind your back and stick a piece of bread in your ear I suppose there might be a passing resemblance for a millisecond.

On another note youre comparing one of Kim's most tossed-off-uncaring hooks to Peter Hooks' most popular and iconic bassline. Says alot, id say

JD's ''Failures'' reminds me a bit of the V3's version of ''Queen of the Underground'' which you can find on their ''Pimping In the 90s'' album/compilation of various material. Here's another version by another Jim Shepard-related band, Ego Summit. Great song no matter which version you prefer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0eBrWp4SGM |

if TG aren't getting royalties off this then it's an absolute joke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0ebbYHjy6Q I already disliked this woman (sub-wolf eyes hipster 'noise' trash completely devoid of abrasion or even interest) I loathe her now. |
