This one is super-ugly airbrush cheese. I love this album and I love Pentagram, but yecch:

rather ripped: laziest sonic youth album ever.

This is actually among my favourite cover art of theirs. EJST&NS, WM, ATL, Dirty are all worse, to my mind. And that's regardless of my opinion on the content of those albums (some I adore, others leave me cold).

Savage Clone 10.12.2006 11:29 AM

Those Marillion covers are hurtful to me.

Glice 10.12.2006 11:30 AM

I always think this seems like it belongs to a rubbish metal album, rather than being one of the finest moments of early 80s post-punk (or whatever)

I don't like the color scheme of thar Birthday Party record, but I don't have a problem with Big Daddy-style hot rod cartoons.

porkmarras 10.12.2006 11:32 AM

Yes that's an awful cover and i can't figure out why it happened and what they were thinking there.

The LP re-issue was worse than the original. It's even more Garish. And it doesn't make sense to have the singles they tacked on, ruins the flow of the record.

Inhuman 10.12.2006 11:50 AM

It was a completely unneccesary album. The cover seems as though they couldn't think of an appropriate cover, so they just put a black background with "Nirvana" in the center to give it the "epic" look of a polished greatest hits album. I really wouldn't mind if the box set had this cover, because it would at least be more appropriate. I hate how they promote Nirvana; isn't there a new CD release after the box set?

There was a cd released post-Box Set that was just a highlights of the box set cd.

Actually, the manager of my favorite local record store is also an art student, and he claims the cover is a great example of the work by that artist. (I forget the name.) I don't particularly like the artist and his work, but it was interesting to learn that it apparently has some artistic merit or connection to the art world, at least.

the rr cover looks almost like a bootleg/pirate cover, it's all badly done, fake computer-generated stencil. that's why i said it was lazy; if someone told me it was done in more than five minutes, i would call them liars.

DemonBox 10.12.2006 05:05 PM

yuck.
I absolutly hate these guys. I was working at the local-radio, and there was this guy who always played Die Flippers. Fuck him, fuck this incredebly crappy band, and fuck their ugly album covers.

That cover does seem out of place amongst their other album covers. Not that they were ever big on the cover art. I do think this is the best though:
