Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter aren't button mashing fights. I'd argue that every other 3D fighter is, to an extent. If you button mash in Soul Calibur, you WILL get fucked over by someone who knows what they're doing.

And I hate 3D fighters -- except for Soul Calibur, Tobal No. 2, and Virtua Fighter 4. I am not very good at Virtua Fighter 4, but it is extremely deep and rewarding. It's a bit slow and boring, but it's the deepest combat ever. I just haven't committed myself to it yet. 2D fighters are where it's at, though... Guilty Gear and SF Alpha 3.

Anyone else think Mortal Kombat is absolute garbage? and yeah, I won a Mortal Kombat 3 tournament when I was younger, and I won free rentals at blockbuster for a year, but I still think those games suck now. They're designed around what a 10-year-old's concept of cool is. OH SHIT, NINJAZ AND SKULLS AND REPTILEZ THAT SPIT ACIDD

noisereductions 10.09.2010 09:44 AM

The first MK sucks. I really like the 2nd though. The SNES and GB ports make me happy. The 3rd was ok, specifically on PS1. After that... meh.

I dunno, always felt like it kind of was. I never really got into it because it everytime I watched someone play it, it seem'd like it.

I for one have always hated the MK series.
The fighting system is slow, stupid, and shallow.
Yes...complete garbage.

EVOLghost 10.09.2010 12:50 PM

holy fuck...this game is pretty hard. controls aren't SPECTACULAR but they are good. little bit weirded out by the button layouts...but it's still good. Story is mediocre, but I am soon hoping it will pick up. but Man. After the first boss, shit is just insane! I mean you constantly die, which is kind of the point of the game...but yeh. I like it.

the class I chose was a knight. They have a bunch of other classes too...Slight derivatives of everything though. but yeh, it seems easy, but the length of levels and the strenghts of certain enemies makes it tough.

MK3 Ultimate Edition for SNES is killer.

shabbray2.0 10.09.2010 02:15 PM

I am thinkin bout getting shaolin monks. for 10 bucks, but not dure yet. any recommendations?

GeneticKiss 10.09.2010 02:22 PM

If you accept Mortal Kombat for what it is, then it can be a nice trip down memory lane. I play Mortal Kombat II on my Midway Arcade Treasures 2 collection all the time, but I can't see myself getting into anything after maybe, MK4.

shabbray2.0 10.09.2010 02:28 PM

same for me. I actially read a review that its placed between mkI and mkII whic is really nice.
I am rooting for the coop mode which must be a nice evening filler.

This is definitely one of the best games this generation. If you're struggling with the Knight, start again as a Royal. They begin with a long-distance magic attack that helps a LOT early on.

The game's unforgiving, but not cheap. It's totally possible if you learn how to play. It actually gets a bit easier as you progress.

It's also probably the bleakest fucking game I've ever played. The ominous atmosphere, the lack of music, the ever present fear of dying (more so than any other game I've played), and the few people you do meet tell a much greater story than any melodramatic RPG.

Keep me updated.

P.S. The servers are pure white right now, so it should make it a bit easier going for a couple weeks.

chairman of the bored 10.09.2010 07:44 PM

Besides Demon's Souls, I'm playing Mischief Makers. Classic! The levels are so short, but each introduces some new type of play. Good stuff.

If a person doesn't actually like fighting games, I could see it being up their alley (same with the TERRIBLE Killer Instinct games). The games are devoid of any kind of depth, ridiculous dial-a-combo gameplay. I like fighting games where fights unfold like chess matches, not games where you can keep performing the same move a thousand times and win. The way I won a Mortal Kombat 3 tournament was simply by playing Cyrax, dropping bombs, when a person jumps at me, I hit them with a huge net, they will either get hit by the bombs (one "long bomb", one "short bomb") or I will uppercut them, jump in for a kick, which they won't block (since you have to press a separate button to block instead of just hitting "back" like most 2D fighters), and then I'll do it all over again. I went through a few rounds where I was never even hit. Another strategy is to play as Kabal and keep doing his tornado run move; while the computer will block it, a human opponent almsot never does. Do that, upercut, before they even get up, do it again, uppercut, do it again, uppercut, congratulations! You won the round! I mean, I'm good at the game, I just don't like it now that I've actually played fighting games that force you to actually think.

ANYWAY... MISCHIEF MAKERS is one of the best games ever. Anyone remember that issue of GameFan where they gave Mischief Makers like 99/98/99 scores and then gave Goldeneye high 80 scores? Haha. That's why I loved Gamefan. (granted, Goldeneye was a better game, but Gamefan were so hardcore about "IT'S 2D! ON A NEXT GEN SYSTEM! THEREFORE IT IS THE BEST GAME EVER! AUTOMATICALLY!! BUY THIS GAME! MAYBE THEN, HERMIE HOPPERHEAD WILL COME TO AMERICA! EVEN THOUGH IT'S HORRIBLE! BUT IT'S 2D! ON A SYSTEM FOR 3D GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!").

Treasure basically does no wrong, except for Stretch Panic, which is absolute garbage. Every other game they ever released is awesome, even Light Crusader and that stupid Ronald McDonald Treasure Island game. Mischief Makers is fun as hell. I like how some of the last levels are similiar to Gunstar Heroes' last levels. Epic boss fights, of course.

chairman of the bored 10.09.2010 07:55 PM

Yeah dude, I just fought the World 2 boss, the dragon guy in the lava. It's awesome how many times you have to hit him to kill him. No conventional 3x bullshit.

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 07:58 PM

It's been 10 years since I played the game, so I don't remember if you've made it past this part yet or not, but there's, like, an OLYMPIC LEVEL... where you have to run really really fast to get past it... for some reason, at the time, I remember not being able to run fast enough to get past it and I had to have my quick fingered friend beat that level for me, haha..

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.09.2010 08:04 PM

I miss Mischief Makers so much! I was just thinking about it the other day. I remember the last few levels were so damn hard! I'd trade my copy of Goldeneye for a copy of Mischief Makers any day!

"Shake! Shake!"

I think Im' just gonna stick it out with the knight. man it up ya know? but yeah....I can't play online right now cause I got my ps3 modded....soo....yeh. I don't feel like getting banned...plus I still need to update, which I can't do...

and while I have you here....have you beaten it? I mean i'm kind of lost since there is hardly any sense of direction in that game. Are you suppose to kill the first boss in each level then just continue the level once you beat the first boss in each level? or....what?

The Knight is a tough class for beginners, but go for the gold.

Yeah, I've beaten it once and I'm starting up my second time. The "ending" of the game is awesome!

Once you beat that first boss, the order in which you progress is mostly up to you. If you get stuck on one level, back out and try a different one. Each time you beat a level of a particular archstone, the next one will open up. (Beat 1-1 to open 1-2, etc.) I'd recommend bouncing around a bit right now and seeing how far you can get in each level. You'll be getting better, leveling up (bring your souls to the Maiden in Black in the Nexus), and opening shortcuts till you find what's right for you.

4-1, Archstone of the Shadowmen, I think, is a great place to get tons of souls!

Oh, don't look up guides and shit! There's so many crazy surprises. Don't spoiler yourself.

EVOLghost 10.09.2010 08:49 PM

^ yeh I was pretty much just running around killin and then dying. But thanks for the tip!

Ps I haven't used a players guided since I was 9

atsonicpark 10.11.2010 01:14 AM

okay, got that genesis 700 game pack from dcisozone.com. I've tested about 150 games on it, and all of them work GREAT! Sometimes you have to change the region, the emulator (the pack comes with 2 emulators), or the video settings, but uh.. yeah. Works great, played Alien Solider and Dynamite Headdy and Gunstar and Ranger X and Pulseman and Zombies Ate My Neighbors and DeCap Attack and Contra Hard Corps and other favorites. If you have a Dreamcast, you HAVE TO get the Genesis pack. Just amazing. Too good to be true, really.

Anyway, mainly been playing Shinobi 3 and Splatterhouse 3. Great games.

I've been looking into both of them lately, and was wondering if anyone on here had an opinion on either title.

viewtiful alan redux 10.11.2010 11:26 PM

Gun is mildly entertaining.

atsonicpark 10.12.2010 12:23 AM

There's no way an X-Files game is good. Gun is horrible.

atsonicpark 10.12.2010 12:23 AM

Bought Tales of the Abyss today.

You know, I wanted that game so much when it first came out, and when I later picked it up used, I've found it's fun to play but I very rarely get the urge to play it. Some parts are very unforgivingly difficult and can't really be done the way they tell you to do them; for example, there's one part where you have to kill all the guards and steal some horses to escape. The indian guys helping you say, "Use your bow to kill all the guards", but shooting one of the guards with the bow just wounds him and he alerts the others. The game tells you your escape attempt has failed and you have to try again. I finally ended up having to sneak up behind everyone and slit their throats. The controls are a little complicated, and if you get the Gamecube version be warned there is some dual thumbstick work, which the GC controller never really did well.

It definitely has a good soundtrack, some of the voice acting is actually fairly good (Lance Henrikson, Tom Skerritt, and Brad Dourif actually lend their talents), and the story is well-written, but I wouldn't pay too much for it if you decide to check it out.

Help! Ok...so I've beaten 1-1 and 2-1. I tried goin' to 3-1...and that shit was just way too hard. Now....should I try 4-1....or 1-2. I've made it to the boss, the Tower Knight and well he kind of kicks my ass. I was able to to knock him down once and I'm able to maneuver around him a lot better. sooo...yeh.
