Vatican politics?! I’m intrigued.

Think Mafia is specific to Sicily. Can’t recall the name of the Neopolitan version. Hmm.

this is for the movies thread but if you haven't yet check out GOMORRAH (the film... from last decade). really fucking good. apparently they've made tv shows and sequels as well but i have not seen. the original i'd highly recommend though.

Yes I think we’ve talked about it. Super violent, yeah? I think you or whoever else was involved in the last convo told me not to watch it in a bad headspace. I’m almost always in a bad headspace, or at least when it comes to being easily unsettled by gratuitous violence (especially rape, nonono), but I should get over that.

there was no rape as i recall but it's a quasi-documentary film about crime *culture*. not talking about an "outfit" here but whole neighborhoods and industries and... it's a bit like "the wire" where you see the connections between the small and the large world... and as realistic if not more because it was filmed with non-actors from those parts. yeah it's fucking nuts. but one of those where it's worth the suffering. maybe. mmmmayyyybe...

demonrail666 03.02.2019 06:33 PM

I've not seen the TV series either but I can't think of anything in the orig. film that'd put anyone off. It's certainly no more violent than any average Mafia/crime film I can think of. Less so in some cases. As symbols says, more about the infrastructure of crime than the actual crimes committed. Really good film.

ilduclo 03.02.2019 07:09 PM

agree on Gomorrah, one of the best

!@#$%! 03.05.2019 08:46 PM

on season 2 of breaking bad still. a rewatch. one can appreciate so much when free from NERVES.

holy fuck that was a stressful show—one of the greatest, really.

More stressful than The Americans?

That show gave me a hemorrhoid, I think. ‘Murcans, that is.

Goddamn great, though.

Of course I’ve seen Breaking Bad. I was just wondering if *you* thought it was more stressful than The Americans, because I remember when I first started watching it the latter, I commented on how ulcer-inducing it was, and you seemed to agree.

I think Americans is more tense. And, frankly, better. But it had the benefit of learning about TV plot excellence from Breaking Bad, so... *shrug*

!@#$%! 03.07.2019 09:53 AM

oh i get what you mean, yeah.

well it’s hard to compare. americans is more claustrophobic. breaking bad is more relatable (for me anyway, living where i live).

i remember breaking bad being so hardcore i could not even watch it sometimes. but this is my second viewing so perspectives change.

one thing is though we still hate skyler lmao. my wife more than me even. she showed me this little graph she found on the interwebs

so fucking true lol

dirty bunny 03.07.2019 06:31 PM

It's been a while since I saw The Sopranos but I don't remember Carmella having an affair.

But anyway. I always felt Skyler was in a no-win situation. I felt myself disliking her because she gets a bit shrill, but at the same time I get why she's completely done with Walter. So I was in this position of finding her annoying because she's an obstacle from the story continuing. If Walter had listened to her, the show is over. So I just kind of wanted her to shut up. But then how can you not sympathize? Her husband is evil.

I can't blame the actress who plays Skyler, I feel like that's just a weak point of the show, and you have to blame it on the writer.

Both great shows, although I'd take Breaking Bad over Sopranos.

!@#$%! 03.07.2019 06:55 PM

skyler is annoying from the get go, when she’ll feed her husband vegan bacon for his birthday, and only the kid will say “this is bullshit”. plus she’s a passive aggressive bitch. cold.

carmela yells and fights and cries and breaks shit— my kind of girl lol. real, and with a heart.

Severian 03.07.2019 07:02 PM

Carmela has an emotional affair with the longhaired dude. Forget his name. He was sent back to Sicily or killed or something.
Also nearly boned the priest.

Never actually had an affair, though. Unless I’m forgetting something.

Tony is a walking affair. More adulterer than husband, that guy.

But yah I love Carmela and hate Skyler. Though I like the actress and I like the quotes I’ve read from her about how her character was received. Forget exactly what makes the perspective interesting, but it’s on that 20 best dramas since the Sopranos list that came out a while ago, under the Breaking Bad entry.

h8kurdt 03.08.2019 04:34 AM

Watched the first part of finding Neverland last night. Grim watching, just absolutely grim watching.

cool. I think the closest to these areas that I've ever visited was Pueblo, Colorado.

(besides that, I only places in the US that I've visited were Chicago, Baltimore and Washington DC)

Rob Instigator 03.08.2019 08:21 AM

There is the most amazing cheese shop in Pueblo Colorado. Spent an hour there tasting cheese. Bought like $70 worth and they packed it all up with dry ice for my trip back to H-town.

I was working a couple of months in Canyon City, CO that is just a few miles away from Pueblo. Canyon City is a terrible shithole, to be honest.

pueblo i've only gone through on my way to denver, it's the last place going north on I-25 that looks like new mexico. i only know of it because it's a big center for federal government data or something. a lot of federal mail has pueblo addresses.

above pueblo the rockies get steeper and it's more typical colorado-- cooler temps, greener vegetation, snowy peaks, etc... we do get that in new mexico above some elevations but it's not as common.

denver is nice.

Season 3 looks like a major downturn so far. The whole IRA thing in Belfast. Lots of bad Irish accents and just not what I want from the show. But I've read a few reviews saying the same thing and to to just bear with it cos things get back to normal in the next season.

A friend of mine is watching the Mayans MC spin off and loving it.

yeah... the dingo ate the baby, right? lololololol. worst plot twist ever.

anyway it goes back to... normal i guess, but it progressively gets worse as well. just too much of the saaaaaaaaame fucking thing. kinda like the walking dead. i gave up on that one too, after so many seasons.

anyway enjoy the fun while it lasts. some great thrills ahead still so not all is lost. hang in there.

just please keep me posted when you've finally had it :D

demonrail666 03.08.2019 11:52 AM

For sure.

It's clearly very reliant on a formula so even when things do return to normal I can imagine it starting to run out of ideas pretty quick. But a large part of its appeal so far, besides all the MC stuff, obviously, has just been the feel of it. The location, the whole California vibe. So moving things from sunny Charming to dark rainy Belfast, even if the plot was a little more interesting (and better acted) is robbing me of my winter sunshin fix.

Vegan bacon? Ewwwww. I understand the hate more now.

season 3 breaking bad on rewatch — im a lot more sympathetic to skyler’s plight right now

(megaspoilers. but everyone has seen this lol)

yes yes, she fucked ted. so. she’s been trying to get the drug dealer out of the house and he would not leave

she’s still not likeable but whatever

btw in deadwood she was not likeable either

Peterpuff 03.11.2019 04:32 PM

Started Last Chance U over the weekend. Quite enjoying it. It's done quite well, imo.

Antagon 03.12.2019 06:53 PM

Started rewatching Season 1 of Twin Peaks again. I actually made the mistake and went straight to Season 3 with probably a decade of not having refreshed my memories of the first two when it came out about 2 years ago. Thought I'd refresh 'em now. And damn, it's just as engrossing as the first time around, probably even more so.
