anyway, watched "being the ricardos" on amazon which was a bit of a letdown be ause the amount of silicone and botox on nicole kidman's face would not let me focus on the good aspects of the movie.

___

also, after some months, im still working through chantal akerman's "jeane dielman, [insert address]" which is a most bizarre film but somehow quite addictive in limited bursts. i lack the attention for a whole sitting, but have half an hour left to go now, and she does her repetitive daily chores. is she a zen master or a cabbage? i can't quite tell hahaha.

___

tried also to see "judge dredd" but it was such an on-the-nose piece of shit flick i quit after 10 or so minutes, bored with it.

___

rewatched also betty blue, the superlong version over 3 hours long. not because i think mental illness is hot or anything, but just because it's a familiar thing for me, and béatrice dalle was, well, ayayay... but seriously, a lot of it is pretty endearing and often funny.

___

also recently tried watching "jennifer's body" but it was slow and boring so i quit after a while.

i've been quitting movies a lot lately...

___

eta (later): finished jeanne dilman! holy shit i wanna watch it again lolololol. if this could be made to play stopped frame by stopped frame like 24 hour psycho it might last 3 whole weeks. the most monotonous weeks in the universe, but sorta mesmerizing, and with a surprise.

worth the long travail. oui oui cabrão.

i wanna see it again hahahahahaaaaa

!@#$%! 01.04.2022 02:44 PM

the trailer made it look like shit (i thought) but the reviews steered me the right way. some of thoese are saying best movie of the year and my answer is probably yes.

the man in the cap there with his back to js is tom waits and he's got this demented/hilarious role

Totally agree. That scene where they say she’s 39 made me laugh, I couldn’t help it. I think it was pretty good though, in general, and Kidman was good, though it would have been interesting to see someone who naturally looks like Lucy play that part — Debra Messing, perhaps? Apparently she wanted to do it but, who knows.

Severian 01.05.2022 08:08 AM

I’ve seen a fuckload of movies recently in account of being laid up with health issues and having some vacation time on top of that.

I rewatched Silver Linings Playbook, which is still great.
I watched The Lost Daughter on Netflix, which is a hell of a film, very eerie and and haunting, with great performances by Olivia Colman as she navigates a rivalry with some Camorra-affiliated bad news motherfuckers and reflects on her life. Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking of Ending Things; Fargo season 4) plays the younger version of Colman’s character in flashback and does a bang-up job.

I also watched a bunch of other shit, I can’t quite remember lol

Last decent Hellraiser movie and I’m not sure it would seem decent if I watched it again today, but I’m damn sure it’s better than 3 and 4 and whatever the fuck else came later

That's because it's the last one with the true villain Julia.

!@#$%! 02.28.2022 05:38 PM

i watched a dark one and a goofy one, as follows:

under the volcano (john huston, 1984)

albert finney is something else, and this movie is great, just great. speaking of botox earlier, and by implication its opposite, which is nothing, jacqueline bisset knows to how age beautifully without injections. ok lol maybe she got some cheeckbone additions but not much else. just saying, she looks perfectly human now, which is great. but back to the movie: it's literally magical, and i want to read the legendary novel that begat it, but i'm afraid of being poisoned by it.

the goofy one:

robin hood: men in tights (mel brooks, 1993)

haaahaaahaaaaaahaaaaahaaaaaaa

not mel's best but still a good time

tw2113 03.01.2022 01:29 AM

Mel's worst are still better than a lot

Rob Instigator 03.01.2022 12:25 PM

Hmm,

Latest movies I have watched? The Bob Odenkirk movie NOBODY. It was fun, but overhyped. It was a lot like the cool hyper violent indie flicks they used to make in the 90's.

Yeah, it was a little overhyped, but I still liked it. Better than the John Wick-type fare. Action felt like had consequences — love it when people are gasping for breath and stumbling around during fight scenes and barely landing their punches. More visceral that way.

Severian 03.02.2022 07:50 AM

I watched Other People with no prior knowledge of it. Very sad film, also very funny. Odd mix but it works. And what a cast, man.

Also watched this little Hulu joint called We Broke Up with lady from You’re the Worst/The Boys season 2 and awesome dude from The Good Place. It was pretty good. Short little thing, felt pretty true to life for a rom-com (which it kinda is and also kinda isn’t).

indeed. I liked it more than my wife did.

Anyone else on Letterboxd? https://letterboxd.com/tw2113/

Severian 03.08.2022 07:45 AM

Pretty good. Too long and self-serious to the point of melodrama at times, but still — pretty good. Not the best Batman movie, but I’d say definitely the best Batman (as in the guy in the suit).

No performance in particular blew me away, but it was good overall. Different from predecessors, but it seems to have (mostly) picked up on the good things from the previous Bat-films.

There were parts I actively did not like but oh well.

Rob Instigator 03.08.2022 09:30 AM

I am down to see it

Rob Instigator 03.08.2022 11:40 AM

Watched The Kings Man on HBO. The Brits sure know how to make a prequel that doesnt suck. They should teach Hollywood.

the poster is probably better than the movie itself, but it has its moments

!@#$%! 03.08.2022 04:55 PM

this past weekend i started watching TITANE, a french movie. i had seen the trailer at the movies and it was stressful, but it made me curious. the actual movie however was FUCKED UP and not long after the half hour mark i was unable to stomach it anymore and killed the program.

lucky for me because i was able to finally watch ARRIVAL

to play off tunic's comment above, this is a bit of a stupid poster that doesn't really want to make me watch the movie, but when i found out it was a denis villeneuve film i figured it was gonna be good. and it was great!

robinstigator gave it a good review long ago and i think severian too, but rob hates movies i love (haha) and severian if i recall has a positive amy adams bias (justified, but still), and i didn't know villeneuve back then, so i postponed viewing until a favorable occasion... and it sat forever in my queue.

thank fuck titane's dehumanizing gore porn sucked shit, because i was able to see this instead. so very good!

I also couldn’t make it far into Titane but ARRIVAL is one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in the last 5-6 years. Like sure Amy Adams is great but the film itself is such an achievement
It manages some real narrative acrobatics without any of it feeling cheap. And the ending absolutely wrenched my guts out and twisted them but also somehow made me joyful.
Beautiful, brilliant film and Villeneuve’s best if you ask me.

tw2113 03.20.2022 08:45 PM

Vampie https://letterboxd.com/film/vampie/ and yes it's as bad as it sounds

BTW, Everyone go vote in the latest poll for which movie I write about next https://upallnightmovies.com/luck-of...es-a-new-poll/

tw2113 03.20.2022 10:14 PM

Added Call Girl of Cthulhu which is equally as bad, but has nudity too. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2689354/

Severian 03.22.2022 06:58 AM

The Boy Downstairs: Indie-ish rom com with the girl who plays Shoshanna in GIRLS. My god what a long hour and a half that was. Imagine two people with zero chemistry being “in love” but pretending to hide it for a whole goddamn movie. That’s basically the thing.

Windfall: New Netflix movie, another Hitchcockian thing with Jesse Plemmons and whatshisname from Forgetting Sarah Marshall or whatever. It’s a plod but it’s fine.

Spider-Man: No Way Home: Fun and insane, sometimes dumb as all hell, sometimes sad. Not Oscar-worthy but one of the better Spidey films from the best Spidey franchise.

choc e-Claire 03.27.2022 10:34 PM

Will Smith!!!

Severian 03.28.2022 07:13 AM

Last movie I watched was Licorice Pizza. It was good but could have been better with some edits. Production design, etc., was great but the film had some flaws/things that didn’t land/were unnecessary.

Will Smith hit Chris Rock on love TV apparently

i thought the slap was maybe okay, but yelling "fucking" afterwards made him look bad (thanks japanese tv for the unbleeped version).

"everybody hates chris," lol, but props to him for keeping it together in the moment. also as some mma folks mentioned he's "got a chin," which, indeed, he did not tumble, and remained fully conscious.

(unlike the academy, i condone a little bit of violence in matters of honor, hahaha)
