Ulysses for the last 6 months. I feel smart when I hold it and dumb when I read it.

Rob Instigator 06.18.2008 02:21 PM

from what I read, Ulysses and Finneganss wake are best if read aloud by an Irish person. the words/sounds make more sense that way.

acousticrock87 06.18.2008 02:51 PM

I've tried sounding it out in an Irish accent in my head, and it does help. But in the end I just end up reading everything three times, and eventually it all makes sense. It's a lot of fucking work, but it is an amazing book despite all that.

just get an annotation book read it side by side, it's quite enlightening

this one is kind of a classic:

one of the things joyce does is inject the whole of irish history and western culture into the brains of his subjects, and then he puts a microphone inside their heads, so the book helps you understand what they were thinking about, making you gain a 3D perspective so to speak.

acousticrock87 06.19.2008 02:52 PM

I plan to read it again like that, but I decided I would read it through once on my own. It's quite an experience, and you can only do it once.

I have been reading up a bit on each chapter after I finish, though. And that one you recommended I've considered buying several times, as it looks amazing (it has maps!), but it's about $30 minimum and I rarely have that much at once.

Cantankerous 06.24.2008 07:52 PM
