Here's one that I haven't seen around much:

Fushushitsa

10/27/79

Hoisei University Hall
Tokyo, Ja

early line up

Haino gtr vox
Jun Hamaro b
Shuhei Takenshina dr

------2cd's unitracked--about 95 minutes

no info on the recording devices used, but the quality is about B+, sort of like those early Les Rallizes sets that were up earlier (maybe a cassette deck and a primitive Sony mic?) It's a pretty blistering set, so those who are fans will probably want this one!

Mike, i'm affraid all of these come from a lossy source. I took a look at them in Audition and there is no doubt somewhere on the line were encoded to a lossy codec.

ilduclo 03.16.2010 11:44 AM

MIGHT be minidisc in the source. I think the taper was transitioning to the dat at that date, so it could still be ATRAC, he may have used a LP mode, too.....but it should be noted I did get these direct from the source.

i'm afraid is not. all MD recordings dubbed to WAV have some static above the highest frequencies, and can be clearly seen in the spectral view. Lossy encoders erase all that data leaving the view blank (black), which is the case of this recording.

also, i've compared my minidisc version with this one and it's not the same. to my best knowledge, ther are just two recordings of this particular gig. The MD that was seed on dime by Phil Snider (recorded by a friend of his) and Phil Snider's own DAT recording (CSB > TCD-D100) which was not seeded because it was "distorted on the loud parts"... like this one...

Anyway, since the MD version i have is better sounding and not re-encoded i'll upload it on here most probaly tomorrow.

best,
Andrei

hmmm-- so you speculate that the one I have is a dat>mp3 conversion? would seem to be really odd, since I got it from the source way back in the day.....I suppose it might have been transferred wrong, but the taper didn't have many computer skills back then, and usually did a direct transfer from the md or dat to a standalone cd burner.....

whatever, appreciate your vigilance! :D

rappard 03.16.2010 03:03 PM

Perhaps pointless/wrong speculation (not having seen the spectra):
Recorded at 32 kHz instead of the usual 44.1 or 48? Doesn't 32 allow for longer recording times (similar to LP versus SP MiniDisc recordings)?

yep, most likely is Phil Snider's DAT recording converted somewhere down the line to a lossy codec.
