Some standouts from last year:

Machine Woman - Camille

Ploy - Footprints in Solid Rock

Tzusing - King of Hosts

Jasss - Danza

Can't recommend Tzusing's stuff highly enough

Thanks man!

Also, from last year, Chris Martinez's OST for Neon Demon had some great stuff on it (as do all Chris Martinez OSTs).

Hippy :D

Chris Martinez did Neon Demon? Awesome! I still haven’t seen that. I’m a little scared to. But now I’m definitely going to listen to the soundtrack.

Thanks!

P.s. the Four Tet was actually one of the least appealing on the list to me. Nothing new or particularly interesting going on on that record, which is disappointing.

Large parts of New Energy belong in that special layer of hell reserved for music you could hear in Audi ads or wellbeing clinics. It's a problem I have with a lot of electronica. Something about all those clean lines and smooth surfaces.

YES! But Kieran Hebden is *definitely* not ALL like that. He’s made some really goddamn interesting shit. I didn’t feel like this was one of his best albums by a long shot, but it was sill listenable.

I know this is the wrong thread to ask but why would you be too scared to watch Neon Demon?

Because I know Nicolas Winding-Refn and I know his films. They always elicit a visceral reaction, and Neon Demon is his most polarizing film yet. So I’m just imagining a lot of long tense pauses and feeling like I’m being experimented on. That’s how I felt during Only God Forgives, and it took me three views to come to a place where I could even appreciate that one. So yeah, I’m at the very least feeling extreme trepidation about Neon Demon.

Fair nuff?

Speaking of soundtracks I'm obsessed with the track Sea Wall from the new Blade Runner soundtrack. Fuck, that drone sound slays me.

Oh god, yes. The soundtrack is so goddamn good. It almost plays like an album... almost. But in those moments when it brings the movie back into the front of your mind, that there is some good shit.

Fuckers! There’s a new DJ KOZE single out, with two great songs on it.

Listen to DJ KOZE or don’t talk to me about bleeps and bloops, heard?

That just sounds like a re-hash of old Basic Channel stuff from the mid 90s

You’re a rehash of stuff!

Are you seriously not into DJ Koze? Have you not heard “Amygdala?” Or his utterly transformative remix of Superflu’s “Jo Gurt?” Or his Adolf Noise record? He is, no-shit, modern house music’s most interesting player.

”Jo Gurt” (DJ Koze remix)
Dj Koze ft. Matthew Dear - “My Plans”

Get with it man.

I haven't heard it either, though thanks for recommendation. Will definitely check it out.

Yeah man. I try to mention it as often as I can to as many people as possible. It’s one of the best albums of the decade in any genre.

Koze is weird because he’s a house artist, so there’s an element of redundancy in the genre and people who listen to one song or a snippet might think he’s just like a million other artists, but he just infuses his work with personality and texture and different, seemingly incompatible moods. I legitimately think he’s he most interesting artist in electronic music. Nobody else makes music that is quite as consistently evocative of actual human emotions. It’s whimsical and sad and sometimes a little bit scary and sometimes just plain dumb fun, but somehow it all feels like Koze.

You deserve to own “Amygdala” and have it in your life. The beats and sounds will seep into your consciousness and twist your shit up.

I guess he’s similar in some respects to artists like Todd Terje, Nosaj Thing and KidKanevil, but he’s just on another level altogether. And I really enjoy those artists.

Listen to that “Joe Gurt” remix I linked up yonder ^^ ... not a proper Koze song, but check it out, then listen to the Superflu original, and I think you’ll see what I mean about him infusing everything he touches with a certain... Koziness.

Sales pitch over.

Severian 02.23.2018 06:51 PM

So Nicolas Jaar (aka the second most interesting artist in electronic music next to Koze) just dropped a new album under his A.A.L. alias. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know about it until Pitchfork released a blurb about how “Nicolas Jaar just released an album and nobody noticed.” But oh well.

More spunky than the excellent “SIRENS” or “Space is Only Noise” ... more house-y too.

I recommend it!

Either I was replying to the wrong post or ... something ... cos yeah, that EP doesn't sound like Basic Channel.

But I'm not hugely into the DJ Koze stuff I've heard, which, while clever, seems more suited to the car or the home stereo than the dancefloor - which is where I think all House music must ultimately be judged.

Definitely more headspacey tjank dance-floory. He’s not house in a traditional sense. Way more cerebral and intimate than that. Though I’m sure his shit would sound good on molly or whatever.

He was more overtly dancey early on, but I think he’s too weird and quirky and ultimately experimental to be confined by dance music structures and such.

seriously though.....the second round is so so great, they've reached this incredible sort of plateau where everything has evened out and they're operating entirely in their own idiom. stunning.

seeing them here in tokyo in june and haven't anticipated a show this much for a real long time.

They're playing a two-hour set, every Thursday, during April. The most recent set is played (on repeat) 24/7, and you can purchase high quality recordings of each set on Ae's website.

The Soup Nazi 05.11.2018 01:05 PM

Why didn't you degenerates tell me last year that Kara-Lis Coverdale had released Grafts (probably her best yet)? When I found out, the gold vinyl was sold out and I had to pay 50 bucks to a Discogs seller for the damn thing.

I don't think they serve my brand of "electronic music" in this pub. Check please!

Everyone go and listen to the new DJ KOZE album

don't like to argue with people on the internet cause there is no real use but what you write is not really true. or lets put it this way: it's complete bullshit.
music comes down to taste, but koze's music is just way too overrated and this is kinda pissing me off. its a very well produced album, and it's great, but definetly not as good as you put it.
there's so many lesser known artists that make equally good (or better ?) house/techno (whatever electronic dance music), but are not praised by the press, so most people who don't dig deep, don't hear about them. and that is a shame.

and well. pick up is one of the lamest tunes of this year. let's say, YOU had written that tune in yr bedroom (and lets be honest here, that is possible cause that's just 3 loops and a vocal sample), NO ONE on earth would give a flying fuck about it, cause that sound was so overdone between '96 and '98, that no one wanted to hear another filter house toon in their entire life ever again...

Do a search for “DJ Koze” in this forum and let me know who else has mentioned him.

I guess Pitchfork gave his new album a good rating, but that’s a first as far as I know. He’s certainly never come up in Rolling Stone.

It’s weird that you say he’s overrated. I mention him all the time because until pretty recently it’s seemed to me that the opposite is true.

But yeah opinion and stuffs.
I guess I need to preface every opinion statement I make with “IMHO” or something so people won’t get confused and think I’m talking about applying the scientific method to a series of tests to end up with the words I produce.

Severian 05.14.2018 01:08 PM

“I don’t like to argue with people” but ima argue with you about something that I’m insisting is a matter of opinion, and also insist that your opinion on it is wrong. Derp.

dude. this is a sonic youth forum. it makes total sense that people don't know him :)
go to any electronic music site (RA, FACT, XL8R whatnot..) and all of them are going wild about that album, especially "pick up".. (and they always were going wild about anything he ever did, including pitchfork.. and this is what pisses me off actually) i don't mind if you call it the album of the century - i'm just trying to point out, that this is an overstatement, and you'd agree if you knew some lesser hyped stuff... (and yes, i read yr older comments)

peas!
