gymnasium is great, good song that young man one. great!

atari 2600 02.28.2008 06:36 PM

For anyone that downloaded the Gymnasium show that's going around, here's a proper fix and some nice disc filler (or perhaps consider making this disc two of a '66 and '67 set) if you like.
Cherry-picked from various bootlegs and with similar sound quality to those from the Gymnasium show, tracks 6-11* are downloadable at the badongo link below.

*Of course this is only a suggested track order; "Miss Joanie Lee" may be better as the closer, for instance...

The Velvet Underground
New York '66 & '67

The Gymnasium, NYC 4/??/67
1 I'm Not A Young Man Anymore 7:17
2 Guess I'm Falling in Love 4:18
3 Waiting For The Man 5:24
4 Run Run Run 6:55
5 Sister Ray 18:55

The Factory, NYC 1/03/66 rehearsal session
6 Miss Joanie Lee 11:57
7 Day Tripper tease > Boom Boom Boom (instrumental) 6:23
8 Heroin 6:17
9 There She Goes Again 3:34

The Gymnasium, NYC 4/??/67
10 Guess I'm Falling in Love* 4:12

Cinematheque, NYC 2/06/66
11 European Son (instrumental)+ 4:16

http://www.badongo.com/file/8050395
92 MB .rar vbr .wma and *.wav

*lossless .wav from Caught Between the Twisted Stars
Disc Four - "Illuminations Of Atonality"
performed at a different April '67 show at The Gymnasium

+ Lou can faintly be heard singing the lyrics to "Suzie Q" at the beginning, but other than this, the track is an instrumental "European Son." The show took place at one of Andy Warhol's "Up-Tight" happenings at Cinematheque on W. 41st St.

Tokolosh 02.28.2008 06:52 PM

Thanks atari.

atari 2600 02.28.2008 07:03 PM

You're welcome. dbpoweramp can convert those .wma to .mp3 for Mac-only users. You probably have something worked out already.

At one time there obviously was an alternate April '67 Gymansium recording because the other "Guess I'm Falling In Love" appears on disc four of Caught Between the Twisted Stars. Hey, maybe that show is still out there and will surface too eventually. It might even be an early/late show kind of deal...who knows?
It's my rudimentary understanding that this one came about because the owner of a surviving tape made a bunch of green vinyl copies to sell on ebay and then someone along the line (most likely in Belgium) digitized it.

The "Heroin" from the '66 rehearsal at the Factory is interesting. It sounds like it could be one the first times they ran through the arrangement. It's very sparse save for a couple of wonderfully ecstatic viola outbursts courtesy of John Cale.

█████████ 02.28.2008 10:13 PM

nice

uhler 02.28.2008 10:14 PM

good stuff

sarramkrop 02.29.2008 05:38 AM

Thanks for that, atari. Did you hear on a track off the Warhol tapes when Lou Reed is practicing and suddenly he starts playing the riff of The Beatles's ''Day Tripper''? I was surprised by that.

gmku 02.29.2008 08:28 AM

Thanks, Atari. More cool stuff.

sarramkrop 02.29.2008 10:07 AM

I'd happily give an eye to have a recording of the above. This is apparently from one of the 1966 Chicago dates without Lulu Reed.

gmku 02.29.2008 10:14 AM

Okay, let's not overboard on the bootleg thing. Too much of a good thing and all that...

sarramkrop 02.29.2008 10:15 AM

Shut it, will you?

I've Got a Secret with guests John Cale and Karl Schenzer (1963)

From the YouTuber who uploaded this gem:

"John Cale was the guest on this September 16, 1963 episode of I've Got a Secret. His secret centered around his participation in an 18 hour piano playing marathon that was the first full length performance of Erik Satie's "Vexations". (Not mentioned, John Cage was also one of the pianists.) Also on stage was Off- Broadway actor, Karl Schenzer, who's secret was that he was the only person to stay for the entire concert performance."

Rarest Vinyl: The Velvet Underground & Nico 1968

This one is all about the peelable banana. The VU and Nico’s 1968 debut record came with instant cool: an actual piece of pop art by the master of mass-produced kitsch meets high-art himself, Andy Warhol. Today you will find many copies of this powerhouse LP sans peel:
recent ebay price: $79.50

You can see the faded edges of the original banana sticker. I wonder if the exclamation point sticker on my VU Loaded record is worth anything?
recent ebay price: $129.49

So close! Looks like somebody got the joke halfway down and tried to salvage what was left of their poor, half discarded sticker. Still, we see what a little banana peel can do for an otherwise shabby looking record.
recent ebay price: $313.00

Those who could resist Warhol’s suggestion to “Peel Slowly And See” are looking at around $150 to $300 for their mint copy of this classic album.
But enough about the sleeve, ain’t the music why it’s worth all the dollars.

radarmaker 05.28.2008 02:14 PM

That's a pretty pointless comparison since they've got mono copies alongside stereo and don't mention whether they're Emerson, sticker or airbrushed covers.
