ew. SOA was great at first but eventually (season 3? 4? more?) turned into such pointless shit i quit it midway with no regrets—with relief even. same as, oh, what was that laughable zombie mess? the walking dead! fucksakes. ridiculous. please kill them all already.

however, same writer/creator as SOA, just way better, from a few years earlier: THE SHIELD. o man. highly watchable from start to finish. i think that would be definitely your bag. great show, great characters, tense as fuck, and no letdown as i recall. the commish turned badass. who knew? but seriously, check it if you haven’t.

Ultimately I think I'm still a little stuck in the tradition of shows that had self-contained episodes. So of these newer HBO style series, I tend to prefer the ones where the arc is contained within a single season. (Like, say, True Detective or American Horror Story)

Just finished BoJack horseman. So good, just so, so good. Anyone who started it then dropped it like I did go back and get through the first 6 episodes. After that it's brilliance reveals itself more and more.

Can't think of anything like it right now on TV.

I agree. The first four seasons are, like, holy shit SO good.

Not as thrilled by the fifth season, but still enjoyed it.

First four though... wow. Funny how a ludicrous animated show about a talking horse could say so much more about humanity and whatnot than most prestige dramas that try so hard to do exactly that.

There’s a common plot pattern though. Every season there’s goofiness peppered with hints at some darker undercurrent, and every season the darker undercurrent comes to the surface in the last few episodes and is shockingly serious. Then there’s a “sigh, moving on” episode and rinse and repeat next season.

They’re trying to one-up the darkness, I think, which might be why most recent season was starting to feel forced to me.

But yeah, great stuff. Eat shit, Simpsons.

Also I’m watching THE ROMANOVS on Amazon.

From Mad Men creators with many Mad Men actors. Some of the acting is a bit wooden, but I think that’s intentional to a degree (though why, I dunno... I haven’t figured it all out yet), but man, some of the stories are really goddamn good.

All loosely related, toying with different genres in each ep. From rom-com to thriller to modern aristocratic Cinderella shit. I’m sure it’s smarter than I am, and it will reveal itself to be brilliant throughout (because, well, Mad Men) but for now it’s just fun to guess at WTF the point is supposed to be.

ALSO, it has Kerry Bishé from HALT AND CATCH FIRE, who I could watch all day every day.

My Brilliant Friend. excellent. superb acting and a wonderful soundtrack. Italian town in late 50's/early 60's. Very accurate portrayals and sets, costumes. Nice writing, too.

Agreed. Tbh, I didn't agree with Sevs opinion that a)this was the worst season and b)the format is getting tired. Something different was happening on this one. Whilst I agree a lot of it was BoJack doing something shitty and then trying to apologise for it. I think they were braver with it this time round. That eulogy episode for example. Fuck that was just brilliant. The fact they ended it as they did they knew it was gonna go in a different direction next season.

Even Todd was a lot more bearable in this one.

I don’t think I said “worst season,” but... like... the mother-sister-dementia storyline of season 4 was SO FUCKING WOW. It actually made me cry. There was something Salingeresque about the portrayal of family dynamic, which sounds ridiculous since it’s about a talking horse comedian, but it’s true.

I think going where they went in season 5 was just... I don’t know how to really explain it other than with a shitty metaphor, so here we go:

Season 4 is the deep end of the pool. Feels like there’s no more depth to be achieved without drowning. But instead of, say, moving to the ocean for a deeper swim, season 5 just dumped a bunch of black ink into the pool and said, “Are you uncomfortable yet?”

Does that make any sense?

I still liked season 5, and it’s still amazing, but it didn’t reach the same emotional depths for me. It just tried to reach other kinds of extreme emotions rather than continuing to explore what was there. Not saying it was bad, but it wasn’t as strong as season 4.

i must have averted my eyes to prevent THE CURSE OF SEVERINO. which is when he tells you everything before you watch it. so that bullet was dodged.

but yeah loved this season tons. my favorite episode of all time remains the one under the ocean of course, which was before (3?). but oh hell yeah, that eulogy was genius—the format of the whole thing was ballsy as fuck. in a cartoon! lol. also enjoyed mr robot’s performance throughout.

my least favorite season was the one with the most mr. peanutbutter. can’t stand the fucking guy lol.

If I’m on the fence about watching a show, and I hear something about the plot that sounds bizarre or interesting, I’ll want to know more about it and I’ll end up watching the show and forgetting about that plot point in no time.

You — or someone — got me to watch The Americans by making vague references to the plot, and I have no clue what those were because I watched the show and it knocked my knob off.

Just finished season 1 of Sons of Anarchy and really liked it. Will see how far into the whole series I get but so far so good.
