we were talkin here on gossip about acting of david bowie, and this remind about the Prestige, where he played Nikola Tesla. So i've bought this movie, and watched once again. Prestige and Ilussionist were at the same time in cinemas as far as I can remember, and I've choosed Prestige, cuz it's Nolans movie with Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson, and for the first time when i came out of cinema I said that this is good movie nothing more. But today i think it's something more in this movie, and it's worth watching. Good acting, climat, and a little complicated story of two competing magiscians, and the end of the movie... (i can't tell) :p
8,5/10

the ilussionist 7,5/10

atsonicpark 07.08.2008 05:57 PM

yeah prestige is a bit better definitely...

Savage Clone 07.08.2008 05:58 PM

I got a used copy of Jan Svankmajer's "Little Otik" that I'll be watching in the next couple of days; can't wait to check that out.

it's kind of a fun movie but it suffers from an excess of closeups and camera movements that make no sense.

but i think you'll enjoy the darkness of it all.

plus, knowing your thoughts on breeding-- ha ha ha ha. yeah you'll enjoy that.

Savage Clone 07.08.2008 06:04 PM

I've yet to meet a Svankmajer movie I didn't like anyway.

Alex's Trip 07.09.2008 02:28 AM

I just watched Harold and Maude. I really loved it.

_slavo_ 07.09.2008 03:36 AM

Some say it's a great movie but I think it SUCKED. Not my cup of tea at all.

crprte.idnty 07.09.2008 04:14 AM

max headroom (the 1985 tv movie version)

8 / 10

atsonicpark 07.09.2008 05:14 AM

fulltime killer - 8/10

Reccomended.

blood feast 2 - 6/10

A bit too aware of its badness to be great but had some good gore...

teeth - 6/10

Um... yeah. It was decent. For a vagina-with-teeth movie.

LifeDistortion 07.10.2008 02:15 AM

I didn't know very much about Ian Curtis and only knew Joy Division from songs I'd heard on the radio, but this was an awesome film.

✌➬ 07.10.2008 02:16 AM

!@#$%! 07.10.2008 12:33 PM

im always puzzled by the numbers people assign to movies.

you guys have a grading chart or give points for cinematography, story, acting, etc?

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 12:39 PM

I rate it based on how much I enjoyed it. How much it entertained me. Simple.

It could technically be a decent movie but be completely boring and/or devoid of anything resembling heart... take the Matrix films or the Pirates of the Caribbean films.. I would've give any of those above a 4.

On the other hand, it could be a technically inept movie that is incredibly watchable and entertaining. Like Night Train to Terror or Riki-Oh for example.

On the other hand, I still try to look at the good a film does, so even if it's a film I HATE it has to really be shitty in every way to get, like, a 0 or 1. It also has to be great in many many ways or at least totally succeed in what it attempts to do to get a 10.

And, of course, a 5 is AVERAGE.

I don't see what's so puzzling about that.

Rob Instigator 07.10.2008 12:51 PM

Rob Instigator's movie grading chart, all IMO of course. I will give examples using Clint Eastwood movies.

* (1 star)
Fucking horrible movie, either barely finished it or stopped in the middle. un-entertaining even in a bad way. (City Heat - Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. fucking HORRIBLE)

** (2 stars)
Bad movie. More bad than good. May still be worth watching if yr a fan of the genre, or the actors, or just like watching movies that are so bad they can be enjoyed while laughing at them. (Pink Caddilac - shit. Pink Caddilac may be more between 1 and 2 stars....)

*** (3 stars)
Decent movie. Entertaining at the least. Here are the glut of comedies and action movies I watch. Fun for a saturday afternoon, but nothing that will make you sit up and take notice. May be 1/3 crap. (Space Cowboys - enjoyable but a complete fairy tale anywas, and has some cheesy shit thrown in about old dudes.)

**** (4 stars)
Good Movie. Recommended. Entertained throughout, story was good, acting was good, directing and cinematography were good. All in all, a winner. (Outlaw Josey Wales/Escape from Alcatraz - quality films)

***** (5 stars)
Classic. Must watch. Top notch EVERYTHING. You will be affected!
(Unforgiven/Million Dollar baby/Good The Bad & The Ugly - classic fcking movies man.)

see 5 i can see as a translation of horrible/bad/decent/good/awesome

netflix has "hated it" "didn't like it" "liked it" "really liked it" and "loved it"

i can get that.

but 15.5/20?? ha ha you know what i mean.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 12:53 PM

where would any which way but loose rate in your system?

Rob Instigator 07.10.2008 12:54 PM

I give this thread a 13.7 out of a Base 22 system.

Rob Instigator 07.10.2008 12:54 PM

any which way but loose is a 2 star movie in my system.
only good while high

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 12:55 PM

Here's my scale:

0 - Watching may causes cancer
1 - Awful
2 - Very bad
3 - Bad
4 - Below average
5 - Average
6 - Pretty good
7 - Good
8 - Really good
9 - Great!
10 - Perfect

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 12:55 PM

What would you rate THE ROOKIE?

That's a solid 3 (on your system) to me.

But a 7 on my system.

Rob Instigator 07.10.2008 12:57 PM

I never saw the rookie!

hey atsonic, can you rattle off a few of your movie 10's?

MellySingsDoom 07.10.2008 12:59 PM

I used to like the reviews set-up in the UK film mag "Shock Xpress" - they'd have a review rounnd-up (giving each film a rating of 0-5 from each SX writer), then each SX staffer would have a bunch of films to review themselves. Needless to say, the negative reviews were usually the funniest (Troma films were given regular shoeings, as I recall, but my own favourite was for "Godzilla 1985", where the publisher gave it a thumbs up, whilst the editor said something alone the lines of "20 minutes of inept hilarity, followed by 70 minutes of sheer boredom". Eeh, them were the days...

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:00 PM

casino, taxi driver, el topo, se7en, holy mountain, once upon a time in the west (though I think I gave it a 9, it's probably worth a 10), the dead zone, tetsuo: the iron man, reservoir dogs (I'd probably give Pulp Fiction a 9), videodrome, shawshank redemtpion (even though I never want to watch it again, I can't deny that it's perfect).. uhhh...

I dunno. Not many really... Just films that 100% accomplish what they set out to do without losing their entertainment value.. films that can be re-watched constantly and you always catch new details.. etc.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:01 PM

Troma has probably released more great films than any film studio in history.. followed closely by Anchor Bay.

i'd give that a 4 cos i "really liked it" though one must admit it has flaws & cheeze-- call me lowbrow.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:05 PM

it has to be hilarious when stoned, I agree with that.

i was 12 i think-- the same as stoned i guess?

MellySingsDoom 07.10.2008 01:13 PM

Here's my scale of 0-10 using films as a reference, a la Rob Instigator:

0 - "Soul Man" (a film so painfully bad it defies any rational analysis)
1 - "Bloodsucking Freaks" (offensively rubbish, misogynist and thoroughly inept drivel)
2 - "Gangs Of New York" - only gets a 2 for Daniel Day Lewis, because otherwise this is one shitfest of a film, man.
3 - "Desperados" - should be a good film, is fairly boring, and loses major point for Quentin Tarantino's shocking acting.
4 - "Anthropophagous" - a very boring film, but with some great/funny splatter scenes, and it has a certain inept charm to it.
5 - "Requiem For A Dream" - misfires on quite a few levels, but the set pieces are astonishingly sleazy. It at least captures some of the essence of the book as well.
6 - "Weekend" - heralded the start of Jean-Luc Godard's boring period, but nonetheless has some great performances and scenes which stand out.
7 - "Throne Of Blood" - Kurosawa's fine retelling of "Macbeth", with a bravura performance from Tonishiro Minfune.
8 - "Female Trouble" - When it comes to picking the best of John Waters, it feels like to me trying to pick your favourite kid. However, I do have a real fondness for this trash epic, and Edith Massey also steals the show from Divine in places. Julien Temple "borrowed" one of the last scenes of this opus when directing the Sid Vicious "My Way" video.
9 - "Texas Chainsaw Masacre" - Still my favourite horror film of all time. It's relative lack of gore is more than made up for in atmosphere, pacing, ane tension. The last 20 minutes of this film are arguably the most terrifying in post-war cinematic history.
10 - "Aguirre, Wrath Of God" - One of Werner Herzog's masterpieces, with a stunning and iconoclastic performance from Klaus Kinski. If nothing else, the photography is nothing short of heavenly in places.

!@#$%! 07.10.2008 01:19 PM

see if i was a point-scoring guy i'd break down into categories & assign 1-5 points to things such as:

cinematography
art direction
acting
screenplay
editing

say those categories add up to 25 points. but they you could do other categories right? like music/soundtrack, or audio editing, and special effects (and all that crap that makes up the oscar)

and sometimes a great story overwhelms shit like bad acting & low production values.

so ultimately for me the numbers are incomprehensible & the only thing i can say is "that shit SUCKED" or "best fucking movie EVERRRRR".

i think numbers are a tool of the illuminati :D

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:19 PM

I'd give Bloodsucking Freaks a 5, it's hilarious... but the rest of what you said is true.

Love Ralphus.. and the music in it is amazing.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:23 PM

haha I gave it a 10 above.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:24 PM

If you want it really badly but don't want to pay a lot for it, it's on vhs on amazon for probably a penny or something. The VHS is cool, it comes in a holographic case with the music based short DRUMSTRUCK at the end...

I think the DVD may be out of print...

An amazing film, a total work of genius.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:25 PM

:)

I'd also reccomend Pinnochio 964, Rubber's Lover, Death Powder, Tokyo Fist, Tetsuo 2, Wild Zero, and Electric Dragon 80000v if you end up liking Tetsuo.

Yeah, it's funny that all my other film loving friends find it quite entertaining. Then again, I love "The Wizard Of Gore" (which "B.S. Freaks" borrowed very heavily from), and a lot of them find it as boring as fuck. So what do I know?!

yeah the imagination totally unleashed

16mm b/w film transferred to 35 for distribution looks awesome

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 01:28 PM

oh wizard of gore is amazing.

I love the weird editing in that and how the audience is always the same people. As far as H.G. Lewis goes, I prefer "Gore Gore Girls", but...

That part in Wizard of Gore when he takes the coffins back to the graveyard and everything is RED... I love that.

!@#$%! 07.10.2008 01:30 PM

i didnt like tetsuo 2

it was a huge letdown
