Went over to the dark side yesterday and bought freaking CDs.
The Modern Lovers reissue from Castle. New CD. I have a strange history with this album. Once upon a time, I owned the original Beserkley release. I bought it new for about 8 bucks in a Minneapolis Wax Trax or something like that around 1980. It was mysteriously lost in a move from overseas in 1987. A few years later, I bought the Rhino CD reissue. In 1999, this was stolen. I went without it for a few years, and it became a Holy Grail pursuit. I seriously thought I'd never see this again. Then around 2006, I found and purchased The Modern Lovers on not one but two LPs (Get Back Records reissues, slightly different from one another). But I "needed" this new reissue. And I have to say, for a CD, it's not a bad one. There are several well-chosen bonus tracks, and unlike the Rhino CD reissue (now OOP) from the early 90s, they don't mix the extras inside the original track list. They also eschew the horrible blow-dry haircut photo Rhino used in favor of a pretty close facsimile of the original front cover--although this has been problematic with every TML reissue because not one I've seen has replicated the original Beserkley LP faithfully (plain black cover with the heart, and image of the concert poster on the back). Also things from my two new favorite bands: Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (used CD) Radiohead - OK Computer (!!!) (used CD) |
Witchcraft- The Alchemist CD (Awesome!!!)
Hard-Ons- The Hard-Ons LP (1987) |

made a decent pickup at Bookman's, a used bookstore here in Tucson that sells books, mags, music, and videogames for dirt cheap. Wasnt even planning on buying anything but casually ended up getting:
Mashavishnu Orchestra-Birds of Fire Blonde Redhead-In an Expression of the Inexpressible Primal Scream-Screamadelica PJ Harvey-Rid of Me Spiritualized-Ladies and Gentleman we are Floating in Outerspace and some books: House of Leaves by: Mark Z. Danielewski Joe College by: John Perotta The Story of Junk by: Linda Yablonsky best part of all of this, 30 dollars for EVERYTHING. Fuckin stupid record stores wonder why theyre going broke when theres excellent stores like Bookman's that has great service, great selection, amazing prices, and caters to people who still appreciate the medium that art is given to you by as oppose to the internet, basically people like us. Anyways, its funny im not really a big fan of any of these bands with the exception of PJ. With that said, I got the Spiritualized one cause i got the one he made that came after this and I love Spacemen 3, i mean i really really like the spacemen, when I was gettin loaded all the time Id listen to Perfect Prescritption over and over, but unfortunately, the music that Jason and Peter have made with eachother is just as pretentious as their stuff with Spacemen, but not nearly as beautiful and amazing AND pretentious, and I dont really like this Spiritualized. The one alblum I bought that I think is fuckin amazing is the Mashavishnu, they sound so fuckin amazing. Traditional jazz with some p-funk and even maybe a little (gulp) progressive rock (but I unlike most appreciate a little progressive every now and then). John Mclaughlin in my opinion ranks up there in the god like status with others like Hendrix. I havnt read any of the books yet cause Im saving them for the tedious flights to Boston to go home for the holiday and then back to Tucson. |

![]() Various Artists Kilt By Death: The Sound Of Old Scotland No Label No Cat 3xCD-R The next wad who walks up to me in public and hands me a CD-R of their current post-rock/indie-experimental/improv/hip ‘noise' project with the immortal words “it's happening on your own doorstep!” is gonna have to eat fist. The fact is that there has never been any real history of experimental music in Scotland and outside of the activities of a few scattered individuals that unfortunately remains pretty much the case today. What Scotland has always enjoyed is a fairly voluble DIY/underground rock scene, a scene that - despite the geographical distance - always seemed to have more in common with what was happening beneath the pavements of New York than anything that the media/fashion dictates of London might've encouraged. Kilt By Death, then, is a timely round-up of some of the best - and some of the most unlikely - DIY/punk sides to come out of Scotland in the period 1977-1984. Some of the stuff here is pretty common, some of it is faintly ridiculous (Andy Cameron's “I Wanna Be A Punk Rocker”) and some of it (killer sides like Fire Exit's “Time Wall”, previously comped on Volume 7 of the original Killed By Death series) is as rare as a clue in the putty-soft brain of the average Scottish music journalist. Listened to in one sitting it makes a pretty convincing case for Scotland's inclusion alongside New Zealand as one of the most consistently committed DIY outposts and one that drew sustenance and strength - as opposed to bitterness and poodle-peddling compromise - from a position of relative cultural and geographical isolation. Sometimes, you just gotta be reminded. Includes killer tracks by 35mm Dreams, Alleged, Alternative, Alternators, Another Pretty Face, Article 58, AVO-8, Aztec Camera, Basic Unit, Battery Boys, Beat Necessity, Bee Bee Cee, Boots for Dancing, Brills, Buba and the Shop Assistants, Andy Cameron, Cheetahs, Commercials, Crimedesk, Defiant Pose, Delmontes, DNV, Drive, Electric Personalities, Electrix, End Result, Exile, Exposure, External Menace, Fakes, Fegs, Fire Engines, Fire Exit, Flowers, Freeze, Fun 4, Jesus and Mary Chain, Johnny and the Self-Abusers, Jolt, Josef K, Laughing Apple, Mentol Errors, Metropak, Neon Barbs, Noise Annoys, One Takes, Orange Juice, Passionate Friends, Pastels, Prats, PVC2, Red Letters, Restricted Code, Rezillos, Scars, Scrotum Poles, Significant Zerøs, Simple Minds, Skids, Skroteez, Square Peg, Squibs, Story So Far, Strutz, Subs, Suede Crocodiles, T.P.I., Thermometers, Those Intrinsic Intellectuals, Threats, TV21, Twisted Nerve, Urban Enemies, Valves, Venigmas, Victims of What?, Visitors (Dundee/Edinburgh), Wake, Wayward Skylabs, X-S Discharge, Zips and Zones. |
