Well yeah, how else can someone rate a movie? And fair enough, TCM2 didn't entertain me at all.

atsonicpark 07.13.2010 04:26 PM

You gotta keep in mind I'm basing my ratings on films I haven't watched in at least ten years.

Actually, TCM2 is the first horror movie I ever watched, that I remember. I was probably 6 or 7... Then, it was Cat People. Then, it was Evil Dead 2. Then, it was Darkman (if that counts as a horror movie -- okay, it doesn't). Then, it was Toxic Avenger. And then all the Freddys. Jasons. Halloweens. Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc. They all kinda start to smash together after that...

So, it may not mean as much to me today but it did have an impact on me. I think, given Dennis Hopper (with two chainsaws), it should've been a lot better, and I know the pacing is a bit fucked up... I think it starts out excellently and then just kinda keeps getting worse and worse. But eh. It's still a classic, in a way.

But yeah that whole series is overrated and I haven't felt the need to watch any of 'em in probably a decade, EXCEPT The Next Generation, which I've probably seen like 30 or 40 times. It's funny, too, because I remember when I first got into it, people were saying it was so awful, blah blah. And in recent years, I've noticed -- it has its fair share of detractors still, sure -- but I've noticed that people tend to give it credit for being the only TCM that's actually, from start to finish, ENTERTAINING.

The first one has cool music and a cool atmosphere but then it just turns to shit, a girl going AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH and running around. Boring as fuck. TCM2 is glitzy and glossy and in your face but is paced badly. TCM3 is just fucking TERRIBLE.

But the Next Generation is genuinely creepy, in a very bizarre way (the dude with the rings on his skin who licks the girl's face -- wtf?), it's HILARIOUS, it has great characters.. I love it...

VILMER!!!!!!!!!

GET THAT BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That part where he puts the shotgun in his mouth and pulls the trigger and nothing happens and then he shoots the shotgun at the window above the door and then he smashes a beer can against his head like a college frat boy? Amazing!

That dude who quotes all these famous philosopers and celebrities and politicians?

Leatherface being a whiney crossdressing bitch?

Amazing film.

One of the best ever.

I'd say, all in all, the TCM series is extremely overrated and probably not worth anyone wasting their time with, but The Next Generation is essential viewing.

Derek 07.13.2010 04:39 PM

Yeah I'd agree with you that the series overall is extremely overrated and that The Next Generation is the best one.

Perhaps I'm indifference of opinion about TCM 2 because I watched it last week and not 10 years ago haha... and I've seen a lot of horror movies so far so it's not like I didn't have anything to compare it with.

I think I like the first one a lot because while I didn't enjoy it too much while viewing, it certainly had a lasting effect on me. It was really something I thought about a lot after.

atsonicpark 07.13.2010 04:48 PM

I didn't like it much back in the day, I don't think I'd like it much today. Atmospherically, it reminds me of lots of films... Maniac, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, even Goodnight God Bless (aka Lucifer)... that real scuzzy, dirty atmosphere I like, with a "backwoods" factor that so many awful movies have exploited since then... so, it's cool in that sense. Too bad the direction is kind of incompetent (in a bad way), the pacing is terrible (a flaw in all the TCM's, really, though it is entertaining in The Next Generation). I did listen to the soundtrack a few years back and thought it was rather nice, but certainly not even a 10th as imaginative, creepy, atmospheric, or just flat-out GOOD as one of Fabio Frizzi's scores.

Ultimately, it's one of those movies people cite when they talk about "true horror"! But the movie is literally... unlikeable people sitting around in the woods, talking, for 50 minutes, and then a girl screaming for 30 minutes. And then people sitting around a table with animal bones. Then, the movie just kinda peters out and ends. It's certainly easy to appreciate it, but really, there's not much to it, and it's easy for me to reduce it to such simple elements because very few of the scenes in it do anything for me. It just kinda goes from point to point, letting its "atmosphere" make up for the fact that literally nothing happens in it. Whereas if you look at the all time classic masterpiece LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET.. well, it's a billion times creepier, more entertaining, more atmospheric, more sickening, more thought provoking, etc. As a child, I was HORRIFIED by horror movies and this one just bored me then. Again, watched it probably 9-10 years ago for the 2nd time and was just checking my watch.

It always makes me wonder how certain films get popular and others don't -- it's all marketing, I guess. Ever noticed no TCM movies are massacres? Almost no one ever gets killed with a chainsaw, and it certainly is never a massacre. Hell, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS (also with Gunnar Hansen) is more of a chainsaw massacre!

...I just think TCM is cheesy, in a bad way, too. I remember "IT WAS ALL THE MORE TRAGIC IN THAT THEY WERE YOUNG" in the opening narration. What? Anyway, the first 50 minutes or so are passable in creating a decent atmosphere, but then the last half hour of a woman shrieking at the top of her lungs, nonstop... extremely tiresome movie! Kind of a blown opportunity.

Tobe Hooper is just not a director I particularly enjoy very much, but I will say that Lifeforce is one of the coolest films ever.

Derek 07.13.2010 04:55 PM

Certainly if someone is barricaded with comments such as, "DUDE TCM IS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER" then they are usually prone to believe that when watching, since as I'm sure you know not many people can think for themselves.

Possibly the same for when people say The Next Generation is terrible.

And yeah I'd like more chainsaw killings in them.

(P.S. check the UUUUUU thread on fangs&arrows, people are STILL talking about your post... sigh...)

9/10. Seriously makes me want to check out all of his comics. Besides that, Paul Giamatti gives the performance of his life. RIP Harvey Pekar.

atsonicpark 07.13.2010 05:19 PM

Hah I posted. That dude who is going through my posts on here to take quotes out of context on there is pretty funny, must be bored. Oh well!

Count Mecha 07.13.2010 05:56 PM

Love TCM, I think the sequel is flat out moronic. And I'll admit ignorance to the 3rd and Next Gen. But I think the original builds a neat atmosphere. The bone decorated couch, the meat hook, body in the freezer, the hitchhiker, lot's a cool stuff. I'll admit the movie become a little tedious towards the end with her running around in the woods and leatherface cutting down branches.

But I thoroughly enjoy that movie and don't mind the pace too much. I mean sure the pace is really bad (no where near as bad as TCM2 though) but plenty of 70's horror pictures are like that. Suspiria, Race With The Devil, Evil Dead. They really went to the extreme with the idea of rollercoaster horror.

Though I admit alot of my interest in the film may be rooted in a scene from Summer School when the film is screened for the class and Chainsaw yells 'Do the dance for me baby!'

I had a long post typed out, evaluating the entire series, and explaining how the original TCM is my all-time favorite film...but accidentally deleted it. I'm too lazy to re-type it, so I'll just make a list like everyone else...

TCM - 12/10
TCM 2 - 8/10
TCM 3 - 5/10
TCM Next Generation - 6/10
TCM Remake - 6/10
TCM The Beginning - 3/10

Derek 07.13.2010 07:23 PM

I see I'm alone in my TCM 2 dislike. Oh well, back in the corner I go!

atsonicpark 07.13.2010 07:24 PM

Well, I don't like any of 'em too much, as far as ever wanting to watch any of them again (except for Next Gen). So, if that makes you feel better...

Dr. Eugene Felikson 07.13.2010 07:28 PM

@Derek - It took a couple of viewings for me to truly appreciate it. The entire film is like one big, grotesque, psychedelic joke.

Cool, I have all those.

f u hipster scum

(I just scored the first two seasons at Target for $20!)

atsonicpark 07.14.2010 04:43 AM

okay, movies I've watched recently...

the puffy chair - 6/10

Another day, another mumblecore film. I think I'd really dig these if the a) camera didn't shake so much, b) the characters were better, c) the camera didn't zoom in and out every 3 seconds.

playing god - 5/10

David Duchovny as a fentanyl addict illegal doctor. For some reason, I liked it (5 is not a bad score!). It didn't really do much of anything, but it didn't need to. Odd.

deep cover - 4/10

Starts out okay but just gets ridiculous. Jeff Goldblum sucks.

GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403056/) - 7/10

By the director of the weird as hell GLASS LIPS... this is one bizarre movie! Faded videos trace the once vibrant presence of a lover. A dude obsessively replays the tapes containing his life with some naked chick, finding himself imprisoned by the memories of former flesh. Weird, disturbing, but a bit tiresome.
