Is hotfile the best place to upload large files these days? Hate trying to find sites to upload 500mb+ zips to but I finally have a really fast connection so I can upload a lot from the archives.

I like WeTransfer best - 2 GB limit, and a lovely zen interface.

SendSpace. Files can remain there indefinitely as long as they keep being downloaded at least once a month. The uploader him/herself can be on top of things and know when it's time to download them again in order to keep them alive, since they e-mail you a warning when your files are one week away from expiring.

The file size limit is 300MB, but if you want to upload something bigger you can split it and put all parts in the same folder, which keeps your shit neatly and niftily organized under one single link. For all of this, you need the SendSpace Wizard program.

2012/09/18
The Mint, Los Angeles, CA

This band is lead by Omara "Bombino" Moctar, who lead the Group Bombino on their Guitars from Agadez, Vol. 2 LP from Sublime Frequencies, and has a new LP, Agadez under his own name. Tuareg soul rebel / desert blues / tribal rock from Niger/Mali nomads. Opens acoustic, changes to electric, some near-reggae moments, some very fine long instrumentals.

This was a great show, though some people were disappointed that it didn't last two epic hours, or something. It was also filmed with two professional video cameras, one at each side of the stage, and I noticed some condenser mics onstage pointed at the audience, too. Hope this means either an official release of this show or a DVD/live CD of the current tour might be planned.

Nika and the band hung around the venue after the show was over, and took the time to talk to fans and sign a whole lot of bootleg merch. She said she liked some of those designs. I got three (official, of course) LPs signed as well as the set-list, which was given to me by Kim Free.

Here's some Polaroids taken by my favorite photographer from around these parts, Toni Francois:

A big fuck you to whoever leeches from here or dime, then goes on to sell this type of recordings on rockincd, or some other such lame site like that.

Notes:

Solid sounding show from the OM guys, not as loud as the last time I saw them but that might be down to the venues sound engineer. The new keyboardist/guitarist is a great addition. Om were scheduled to play an hour and a half but due to problems between them and the other band, Dead Skeletons, they ended up playing just an hour. This recording is also available in 96/24 but since its just recorded with the R09's internal mics I'll probably just distribute the 16/44 edition.

Notes:

Dead Skeletons were originally scheduled to play a headline show themselves in The Button Factory until just the week before when their gig was combined with Om, who then became the headliners. The addition of a band caused some frictions which can be heard later in this show when the guitarist calls out Om for taking too long in soundchecking and thus reducing their set time to only 40 mins. This recording is also available in 96/24 but since its just recorded with the R09's internal mics I'll probably just distribute the 16/44 edition.

As always, this is best listened to on headphones and try not to disseminate in MP3 but I can't stop you if you do.

Dead Skeletons
http://www.dead.is/deadskeletons.html

Note: Anton Newcombe from The Brian Jonestown Massacre & the documentary DiG! is the singer of Dead Skeletons.

Review of their latest album:
Death's dark figure looms large over Icelandic psychedelic overlords Dead Skeletons and the mantra-like ruminations contained within Dead Magick. Despite the skull gracing the cover of this epic 12-song collection, this is no morbid reflection on the inevitability that faces us all though scratching below the surface you'd be forgiven for thinking so. Dead Skeletons' main man Jón Sćmundur Audarson has been living with HIV for almost 20 years and his determination to seize life by the lapels rather than cowering in the shadow of death informs this album throughout. As the opening track 'Dead Mantra' states in four different languages, "He who fears death cannot enjoy life."

From the opening drones, distorted organs and guitars wobbling from the effects of heavy-duty tremolo, 'Dead Mantra' is battle of life winning over death and the sonic palette that colours the struggle between fight and surrender is consistent throughout. In the middle of this hypnotic maelstrom come the otherwordly vocals. Bathed in echo and reverb, they attempt to find their way from a spiritual battleground that suggests a strange ambiguity over whether the desire for life can keep mortality away for just that bit longer.

'Dead Magick I' is the sound of Suicide transported to some infernal version of the Kit Kat Club as electronic pulses and throbs collide with off-kilter piano as elsewhere, most notably on 'Lifđu!/Live!', relentless motorik beats keep up the breathless sense of momentum. But there are more subtle moments here too. 'Om Mani Peme Hung' sees guitar lines crossing sequencers like warning shots across a ship's bow and in doing so offers more textures than would be imagined and with a total running time of 72 minutes, Dead Skeletons are masters of creating pace and drama. It's a long ride for sure but then again, reaching for the stars has hardly ever been a soft option.

It's not actually my own recording, I just uploaded the show from DIME for someone else and though I'd post it here too. Though on listening to the show myself the mics do sound a bit better than the R-09 which I have myself..

Thanks. Supposedly the DR-07's mics are even better - and the Sony PCM-M10's are the best (but at twice the price of the average Tascam).

Martin, there's a discussion of built in mics on "ts.com" at

Thanks for the link!

I disagree completely with Acidjack's
"But if you intend to record amplified rock, these internal mics will almost certainly distort."
That's certainly not my experience.

That said, good mics + bb trump internals every time, but for some people budget and convenience are more important. I'd love to be able to buy the kind of kit acidjack and nyctaper run, but I don't have $1000+ lying around. And even if I did, buying taping gear wouldn't be my first consideration - I'm Dutch, so naturally I'd spend it all on hookers and blow.

the "ts" folks are all about the "more complicated your gear, the more important you are in the process" thus there are zillions of dollars being used recording simple singer/songwriter stuff and jam bands.
I've had good luck with the d50 internal mics, as does Weasel Walter, if he's still posting stuff out there.....and I think your and hbj's work with the r9 and m10 are just wonderful. I certainly can see the idea of setting up quickly and forgetting your gear to be able to listen to the show without worrying about wires and batteries. The main reason I don't use the d50 internals more is that I can't set the unit down most scuzzy places I go to and not get it stolen.:(

gambra 10.03.2012 09:35 AM

I've been thinking of getting the R-09 "micskeeter" modification that's mentioned in the thread for ages now, just never gotten the money put aside for it. I emailed Church Audio a few months ago about the price and it was $129 which is about the same price as a whole new recorder at this point really but the CA-11 mics are pretty good sounding.

I have to hold the R-09 while taping in most places I go to, any place I can set them down is usually way over to the side of the venues or just covered up by loads of people standing around it which ruins the sound. I once held the unit for a full 3 hours while taping GY!BE.
