Sums it up perfectly, honestly.

Like said, I am really looking forward to great things from that Alex Lawther kid. I have quite enjoyed him in the few things I have seen him in so far.

Check it. It’s surprisingly good. Like I said, actually some original storytelling going on. In addition to a bunch of variations on tropes.

ilduclo 03.01.2018 10:26 AM

Corporate (on Comedy Central) a pretty savage but funny analysis of work culture. I guarantee you'll get some good laughs out of it.

!@#$%! 03.04.2018 01:49 PM

been bingeing on netflix’s THE CROWN this weekend. about the early reign of the current british queen. that was right on the heels of victoria on amazon last week or so. we’re getting a lot of info about the saxe-coburgs lately.

i don’t care a whit about monarchies, but they do make for entertaining soap opera.

and john lithgow as churchill, holy fuck. from crazy dick solomon to a cold blooded serial killer to this role—he’s really really good.

Severian 03.04.2018 02:34 PM

Season 2 of Vice Principals on HBO via Amazon Prime. Funny as hell and super, super dumb. Nice little nod to Eastbound & Down (which is also both of those things) at the end.

Fun little series. I don’t really get why HBO does these two-season series though. Seems a bit weird. Would have made for a better one-season mini, or a longer series. But two seasons? K.

Anyway, fucking funny. Every time I think I’m sick to death of Danny McBride, I am reminded of the primal allure of high-quality balls, butts and excessive F-word humor. LOL.

!@#$%! 03.05.2018 05:35 PM

^^ HA! east bound & down was fucking great. i don’t mind danny mcbride.

btw, how does HOBO via amazon work for you? i’ve read horrible fucking things about their native app, but mama-san works like buttah.

thinking of getting it for the last season of GAYMOTRON

Works fine man. I turn it on and off when I want stuff so bad I can’t wait for it. It’s currenrly on because of... I forget now... Girls? Whatever. And Westworld’s coming so I’m gonna keep it.

Amazon’s apps are never great. They almost always suck because they try to sidestep other systems but still be all-inclusive, but it gets the job done.

!@#$%! 03.05.2018 11:38 PM

wat. never great” amazon works better than netflix for me. amazon has never broken. netflix fucked the playback to tv via hdmi adapter. amazon plays me the credits when i want to. netflix does some farkakta postplay that kills the mood *and there’s no way to turn it off*. fucking netflix. they dumbed it down and it’s hard to find shit now.

but anyway you should read the hobo2go reviews on the app store lolol. then you’ll appreciate amazon more.

Recommendations to fill the empty space in the meantime most welcome.

Hey... slightly off topic: anyone know of a VPN that can get past Netflix? I'm stuck in Europe and the selection here kinda sux.

dirty bunny 03.08.2018 01:30 AM

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Mostly good, some crap shows. The one on Tokyo was fab, the ones on Shanghai and The Bronx were meh.

Brooklyn 99. Only watched the first few shows of the new season, but it's a fun & funny show.

LifeDistortion 03.16.2018 03:18 PM

The final season of Bates Motel arrived on Netflix about a week or so ago and I never watched it, and I was going to start that, but then I hadn't seen season 4 in over a year so I just decided to watch the series from the beginning.

It's well worth the watch. With all the Blade Runner talk and fans here, I would certainly be interested in this board's take on it.

It took me a few episodes to get into it, but I am quite glad I stuck with it. Character development started off a little slow. It takes a bit to come to terms with the characters, to really empathize with any of them, and to decide who to give a fuck about or not, and why. That might just be my take on it though.

It also felt a little inconsistent to me at times, mostly early on too though. You sort of get used to the tone of it. I found myself bouncing back and forth from "ugh, that felt a little too ameteur try-hard," to "holy shit, that was shot amazingly!" Some of the hyper-violence and constant nudity made me feel like it was trying too hard to be a sci-fi Game of Thrones or something at first, but that sort of subsided too.

I thought Joel Kinnaman did a really solid job in it. I remember being introduced to him via the first season of The Killing and thought he just totally stole that show. I remember being totally mind-blown when I first found out he was actually foreign and hearing his accent in an interview. He just totally nailed that sleazy but kind-hearted character. I certainly never could have foreseen his move into more of an action star role like he seems to be becoming. I really would love to see him cast as some sort of action villain to see what he would bring to such a role. He was able to bring some of sleaziness to his Altered Carbon role too though.

All in all, I found it a good watch, and have certainly recommended it to some friends.

I think that Electric Dreams in next on my list.

ilduclo 03.22.2018 12:33 PM

AC was a bit of a gorefest, too. I enjoyed the "hotel" character and his cohorts most in it.

Rob Instigator 03.22.2018 12:39 PM

Baskets has been as good as ever.

and started in on season 2 of Jessica Jones. so far so slow.....

!@#$%! 03.22.2018 01:10 PM

i finished nurse jackie which had started getting a little shambolic with frequent cast/character replacements for no particular reason. the show didn’t so much end as it simply stopped. it wasn’t breaking bad, with a novel structure, but it was pointing towards it, just never got there. ok. that’s done.

started watching HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA, on amazon. it’s funny, and very relatable for me as a self-employed person, watching others hustle and trying to make it. only saw 1 episode so far and i enjoyed it—-i have also pushed a loaded cart around new york ha ha ha. and oh, business loans for projects! lol.

Severian 03.23.2018 01:11 PM

Jessica Jones season 2 has taken me almost two weeks because I have no fucking time. I’ve literaly been watching the second-to-last episode for four days. I binged the first batch on a sick day and have made incremental progress since.

Adulting eats shit!

And I’m literally on the second to last episode of JJ season 2. It’s been fun and fine and good enough.

Probably not as good as book-readin’, but I am SERIOUSLY BURNED OUT and I need to be passively entertained while I count down the minutes before staying up any later starts to take away from my ability to wake up and go again.

I asked my wife about Nurse Jackie and she said the first 4 seasons were excellent but that the next ones were used to show how it really is like to be in relationship, familial or otherwise, with users/addicts/liars etc, how everything keeps repeating, getting better, acting all high and ighty, then crashing again, drugging again, lying and stealing again.

I have gone through that with several people in my life, some I have had to cut off totally, some I have maintained closeness to, but that does sound about right.....

yeah, she’s incurable ha ha ha. me i haven’t had a ton of contact with that side of life, because i’m more of a cutter offer, ha ha, but i see truths in there yeah.

my problem was not with the texture of the everyday, but with the dramatic structure of the whole thing.

like walter white, jackie is both an addict AND supercompetent (w.w. didnt take drugs, he was hooked on power). and both used their competence to fuel and enable their addiction. and they were also trying to “do good” and ended up destroying the things they cared about—

but where breaking bad had a tense dramatic arc that lasted 5 years, jackie sort of went... nowhere. it’s like the writers were afraid to go to certain places. i guess they wanted to keep it “light” but that ruined it for me because it made the story false. not that it had to be carbon copy of its predecessor, but it just didn’t go where it should have gone. it simply stopped.

you haven’t said anything revealing yet, but preemptively i’ll say please don’t make me add you to the ignore list— i’m a year behind! (actually, 2 years behind at this point).

the americans is probably the ONE show that i really care about how it will end, because it’s really probably the most crucial thing in the whole story

ok i must look away now.

Oh shit! I want to see this!!!

I actually really want to read the book to, as I’ve had some great experiences with dan Simmons in the past (Hyperion, Drood). Maybe that will be next up for me.

ilduclo 04.05.2018 09:03 AM

The Franklin expedition itself makes for a pretty great story...from what I've seen of sea ice (10 months in the Aleutians, including a HARD winter), it's pretty unforgiving with even modern equipment. It didn't help that they preserved their food by sealing cans with lead, either...fascinating history, actually.

Finished this just now and it's been lovely. Something to take you out of your world and glimpse into another England. An England where the sun shines all the time and the countryside day gently goes by.

With all the noise tv brings out, whether it be GoT, or the canned laughter of any numerous tv "comedies" it's nice to have a change of pace with a tv programme that isn't afraid to let you enjoy the scenery in quiet.

Highly recommended.

Severian 04.08.2018 11:30 AM
