I've always had a fascination for songs that no one mentions.

To me it´s quite the same are songs mainstream or not, only what matters is the quality of songs. Of course it´s not very interesting to choose Kool Thing although there is nothing wrong in that song. In my opinion Society is a Hole and Kim Chords are not great songs although they´re as good as the most of the Sonic songs.

I'm a bit odd I know. I copied and pasted everyone's lists (off all 9 pages) into a spread sheet. I tallied them up. This is what happened. Of course "votes" aren't really votes, they're "mentions". Forgive me.

Hits of Sunshine
Cross the Breeze
Rain on Tin

Hmm I don't know if I've done this (half are "at the moment", other half more established)

NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Mote
Washing Machine
Brother James
Schizophrenia
Ghost Bitch
Pipeline/Killtime
Sympathy For the Strawberry
I Love Her All the Time
Trilogy

Hip Priest 09.02.2012 10:35 AM

Beauty Lies in the Eye
Small Flowers Crack Concrete
Tremens
Starpower
Sleepin Around
Pink Steam
Anagrama
On the Strip
Chapel Hill
Beautiful Plateau

Some of them aren't songs, I have shied from listing the three piece from SYR6 as the band are accompanied by another musician and there's nothing from my favourite SY LP, Murray Street. Well, joint favourite with NYC Ghosts & Flowers, but really I prefer the live instrumental version of NYC G&F because I prefer music without vocals on the whole.

Remember that early instrumental jam version of the Sleepin Around Music that was put on the website at one point, sometime before the song's release? That was great.

Starcat 09.02.2012 11:54 AM

Interesting to see peoples' choices and the periods of SY music that people drew from... Here's mine (by date, for lack of a better order):

Kill Yr Idols
Death Valley 69
Rain King
Silver Rocket
Eric's Trip
Trilogy
Mildred Pierce
100%
Sacred Trickster
Anti-Orgasm

Expressway To Yr Skull
Kotton Krown
Schizophrenia
Candle
JC
Disappearer
Sweet Shine
Intro/Brave Men Run

yeah that was used as backing on a doc i saw on youtube

i'd never really got into Sleepin Around because of the vocal, some sy lyrics can be painfully bad, and that one is definitely up there. But the music was rocking!

still cant listen to the song though....

Sonic Al 09.02.2012 03:26 PM

I Dreamed I Dream
Stones
Expressway To Yr skull
'Cross the Breeze
Brother James
The Diamond Sea

I'm not as down on the lyrics for 'Sleepin Around' as you, but I was nominating it largely for the music. It's a great intro, I think.

Funny, I was sure I had downloaded that version as mp3, but I can't find it, and I can't remember where it was downloaded from. Any help appreciated.

Is there any love for Wildflower Soul? The part where it goes from kooky slippin' and slidin' back into that manic intro is one of the best SY moments imo.

This upsets me. Folks do realize that Sonic Youth had some really good albums AFTER 1995 right?? RIGHT??

Diesel 03.05.2014 12:04 PM

Yea and I suppose you think 2pac(kets) was the greatest rapper of all time? pfff. We all know that this accolade belongs to the one, the only Bob Marley. He sang that great song Straight Outta Compton which featured great composition and melodic structure but most all mystery...because no-one actually knows if he really made this song or not. It's like the Area 51 mystery. But this myth was proved true after the release of the 1990 Megadeth album Rust In Peace which had a photo of an Alien on it's cover proving that Aliens do exist in Area 51. So really it's more of a...why is water wet mystery.

Rob Instigator 03.05.2014 12:55 PM

Megadeth's Rust In Peace is so riff-heavy great

Personally, I'd replace "Teenage Riot" with "Pattern Recognition" if that makes you feel better.

Lack of Lee songs is a little more upsetting.

I agree, it is impossible to make one list. Although I pretty much still stand by the earlier post that I made on this thread, I decided to make a top 10 list of songs for each decade they were active. Though somewhat creepily, each list ended up being exactly 14 songs (I decided to only include album/EP songs, if I had included b-sides, the 90's list in particular would be even longer than it already should be).

1980's: Protect Me You, Inhuman, Brother James, Intro/Brave Men Run (In My Family), Tom Violence, Expressway To Yr. Skull, Schizophrenia, The Sprawl/'Cross The Breeze, Candle, Eric's Trip/Hey Joni/Rain King.

1990's: Disappearer, Cinderella's Big Score, Theresa's Sound-World/Chapel Hill, Wish Fulfillment, JC, Bull In The Heather/Doctor's Orders/Sweet Shine, Starfield Road, Skip Tracer, The Diamond Sea, Sunday, Hoarfrost.

2000's: Nevermind (What Was It Anyway), NYC Ghosts & Flowers, Disconnection Notice/Rain On Tin, Karenology, Unmade Bed/Stones, I Love You Golden Blue, Reena, Pink Steam, Sacred Trickster/Massage The History, Antenna, What We Know.

Island_Mote 03.01.2015 10:15 PM

1 Hey Joni
2 Titanium Exposé
3 Teenage Riot
4 The Diamond Sea
5 'Cross the Breeze
6 Mote
7 Pattern Recognition
8 No Queen Blues
9 Pacific Coast Highway
10 Schizophrenia

New Hampshire, Sunday, and The Sprawl are very good too. Damn, they're all so good!
