it switches between that and this

shift + apple + 4 gives you a cursor that you can use to capture the whole screen and it should dump to your desktop after click away from it.

caps lock on + shift + 4 gives you a cursor that you can drag across the entire screen. after you do that, just click and it should save it as "picture 1" or something arbitrary like that.
