Really? (re:the embryo) A lot of the stuff I have heard of theirs I thought was pretty unpleasant in noodly ethno jazz way. I really like Opal and the nnck collab but the few others I've heard were a bit guff. (I think We Keep On was one of them)

hat and beard 06.25.2007 06:18 PM

I dunno. If you can't stomach ethno-fusion-jazz-rock or whatever you want to call it (I can), anything after Opal isn't gonna be your cup-a-tea.
There's some pretty heavy freaked out stuff on most of their records, though, which is why I like them more than your average ethno-jazz noodlers.

There's a pretty excellent video of Embryo playing with some Indian musicians on Youtube. It may be more up your alley.

I can stomach a certain amount of ethno-fusion-jazz-rock but the Embryo stuff I heard was particularly weak. I like Malesch by Agitation Free fora example. That always struck me as being what I hoped Embryo might be like.

Iain 06.25.2007 06:30 PM

And also, what is the Sir Richard Bishop record like?

Norma J 06.25.2007 06:31 PM

Been buying lots from Dischord lately. Awesome stuff like Nations of Ulysses, Bluetip, Black Eyes, Rites of Srping, some live Fugazi, and I finally picked up the Instrument DVD which I've watched for days straight.

It's great. The first side has some really nice improvised modal guitar playing followed by noisy electric guitar dirge.
Side two is more modal playing over (electric?) tambura. The two acoustic pieces are some of the prettiest things I've ever heard him play.
It's definitely one of the better records I've bought lately.

Never heard Agitation Free. I'll check them out.

I went to my local for a gander and stumbled across some, well a bunch of Sun Ra vinyl for $10 a piece. I bought two (Bad and Beautiful, and The Solar-Myth Approach vol 1 - colour vinyl) to check them out because I've heard big things about him on this board, and I'm extremly happy with the purchase. I'll go a purhcase the others now. I also found Omar Rodriguez Lopez's Se Dice Bisonte No Bufalo LP for under $20. All brand new. So major score today.

pokkeherrie 06.26.2007 01:12 PM

Family Underground - Salt of the Sun
Cornelius - Fantasma
Boris - Heavy Rocks
Boris - Flood
Boris & Keiji Haino - Black:Implication Flooding
Charalambides - Electricity Ghost

Always good to hear of another potential Sun Ra convert. It's a pretty good sign if you like both of those records. I don't have Bad and Beautiful but as I recall there are a few standards on there and it isn't that 'out'. The Solar Myth Approach is quite the opposite, both pretty out and with a kind of downer vide at times...especially the opener Spectrum.

What Sun Ra albums do you own?

There was a bunch at the record store I picked these up at. Probably about 10, all for $10 a piece.

cosmokramer 06.27.2007 02:53 AM

I bought the new Polyphonic Spree today. It even came with a patch.

I've got

Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
The Solar Myth Approach vol 1+2
Space is the Place
Helocentric Worlds vol 1
Out There A Minute
Outer Spaceways Incorporated

That's all I actually own I think plus I have a heap more downloaded obviously.

I also just remembered I had Outer Spaceways Inc and that is a really good one. It's a live recording from 68' and there is plenty of squawky free blowing which is always good.

in that case, you should buy Pranzo Oltranzista by him. A good portion of the album is him cooking/eating, with musical accompaniment. It's a brilliant album in its own right, but extremely strange. That Tomahawk album really let me down as I really loved the s/t and Mit Gas, and this was just so far removed from those. That said, it's a great album. Just takes some getting used to.
